she had a sense of humor on her - polish people express cheekiness differently. it's all about being strait-faced and hoping for a reaction (which then triggers LOLs).

I'm Russian and... what? I feel like I've been living a lie. Respect to Vice for uncovering the truth and broadcasting it. Right now I'm feeling the complete polar opposite of pride for what my people did in the USSR. I hope that we can put the past behind us and enjoy Vodka, not fight over it or over anything else.

@@larrywave Nonsense. The Poles have chronicles and manuscripts describing vodka destilation going back to the 14th Century (from grain! Not from potatoes as simpletons Russians do; potatoes hadn't even arrived in to Europe till the 17th C, as animal fodder then.) . The Muscovites didn't even have a single printing press until the 18th century so they can 'claim' any fantasies they want, but only stupid people can believe them. Poland was a civilised country in the Medieval ages, with one of the first universities in the world and the one of the busiest publishing industries in the 14th C and plenty of books describing distillery and various alcohols. The Muscovy was part of the primitive Mongolian empire then. END OF.

This message is for every russian who thinks that russian wodka is the best: Most barkeepers, conniseurs, chefs and other people who knows alcohol think that the best wodka on the world is CHOPIN. It's polish. In Poland we think that the guys in Sweden make some good water to. Wodka is from the word woda and this means water. Aaaand NOW the russians can start with their hating comments against me. Let the shitstorm BEGIN!

Thats one great documentary. Somewhat partial, due to wódka production taking place in numerous countries, not only Poland and Russia at more or less the same time, just probably not documented well enough (and I'm saying that as a Polish guy). Nonetheless, it's most important just to enjoy your time with friends and family when having it. No matter Polish, Russian or Scandinavian, which is also very good btw, or any other. Na zdrowie! ( ="For good health" - watch the movie and you'll understand the origin of polish toast ;)

The etymology is very simply explained. VODKA is based on the word VODA which in every Slavic language means water. Most probably because it's the purest alcohol with no color or fragrance. Actually, the first time I tasted vodka was when 7 years old mistook it for water in the fridge

Vodka first recorded usage was by Portuguese travelers navigating the island of New Guinea in 1729. It was originally called La'aaua, made by combining traditional kava, spice from asia and leafs from mindanao gum trees. The Portuguese travelers took several batches back to Lisbon and the royal court. The royal family did not care for the taste of La'aaua which was then sold by lowly court officials to passing european travelers which found its way east, to the slavic nation of Poland.
