The Controversial Guru Who Wants to 'Upgrade Civilization'

Bentinho Massaro has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, supporters the spiritual guru gained through his teachings about “self-realization,” “enlightenment,” and the idea of “upgrading civilization.” While some of his ideas are pretty standard, like the importance of silent meditation, others are controversial: he’s said that 9/11 was an inside job, that he can change the weather, and that humans might one day join forces with aliens.
To his devout followers, he’s an inspiration-but his critics have accused him of “cult-like” practices and peddling conspiracy theories during his retreats, which run up to $2,000 a pop. For an inside look at Massaro’s teachings, we went to one of his retreats in the Netherlands, speaking with his colleagues, his followers, and Massaro himself to try to understand exactly what the appeal is-and what he makes of the accusations against him.

It's amazing how these types of bad faith people allow news outlets like Vice to come into their sphere, thinking it won't be a bad idea for them. I think the reporter did a great job playing a little bit of naivete in an ethical way to reveal this guy for who he is. She knew that he thinks he can charm her and it's amusing to watch her run circles around him.

It's easy to fear a situation full of people breaking down their own preconceived ideas, breaking down and playing with their trained barriers around concepts and relationships. But that fear and aversion not as intelligent or safety-protecting as they might seem to the "normal, common sense" mindset. It's always surprising to me that even in 2022, when difference, diversity, and such values are allegedly the theme of the day, and yet when faced with actually interacting with and accepting these values in practice, with those are truly different (and not merely superficially so), the same old rigidity, fear, and ill-will arises like clockwork. And ironically, it often comes most powerfully from the most ardent, passionate advocates for "diversity, tolerance, inclusion, etc.", whatever these people actually mean by these words (obviously there is some dishonesty behind these words and what the decode to mean in the progressive, communistic cults of the modern mainstream).

I have been there and it's absolutely beautiful. People here are quick to label something unknown as a cult. Taking a second look, you see people dancing, smiling, hugging, laughing and having fun. Playing volleyball or frisbee together or having a waterfight. And that's all there is. To love yourself, your close ones and even total strangers. By letting go of that fear of strangers and choosing to trust and love and be kind instead.

I'm coming to the conclusion that if we're going to call something a cult, we logically have to call everything a cult. No matter how big or mainstream, no religion is normal. They all have their crazy, wacky teachings that we're all so used to so we don't question it. Also notice how most cults and religions utilize the same things: community, connection, meditation, movement, physical touch, music, dance, singing..... all of these things have a massive impact on our brain chemistry and have been proven to release all the feel good chemicals. They are using our biology to deceive us. These things remind me the human psyche and brain is incredibly weak and impressionable. No, it's not just these people being ignorant or naive... it's you and me. We are all weak and impressionable and the more you study psychology, the more you realize it.

Fancy seeing you here, I watch your videos! While I am not a fan of organized religion by any means, it is important to recognize the difference between religions and cults, cuz they are different. They may share a lot of the same elements but religions are very important culturally and historically and I would argue also socially. Religion's great at maintaining a people's identity through history and cultural changes, just look at the Jews and how they've managed to maintain a culture throughout thousands of years, kilometers, and persecutions. Cults are studied by sociologists and psychologists and are very particular groups that exploit not only the factors you mentioned but also social alienation, brainwashing, propaganda, etc... very specific social and psychological exploits. All for the enrichment of one leader. As I said I don't like traditional organized religion either and I think it needs to be reconstructed for the new area post platonist philosophy. But it is important to recognize that religions and cults are different and need to be dealt with differently. Anyway, love your videos!

She says he found spirituality at age 10 (I question his claims on that), and sought enlightenment in his teens at around the 1:38 mark. But I'm in agreement, I've never liked him. Saw right through him the first time I've seen him talk a few years ago. He's a fraud, regurgitates things said by others in the field that do have something substantial to say, and he just regurgitates combined teachings in a very generic, easy to digest way and uses his age, "relatability" especially with the millennial generation, confidence, and average to above average intellect to pull people in. He's aware of the vulnerability of the people he's dealing with, and that's why he's successful at what he does. Not with all of it or with everyone, but there's a hell of a lot of "off-ness" in that scene, and I've felt this way since I'd take part in some of these gatherings for the past 11 years.

Reflexive distrust of that which is different isn't a virtue. You're not helping your mother by being rigidly attached to what you've been propagandized to believe. Diversity, and new, different ways of being sound pleasant when they're at a distance and we only have to interact with those who are fundamentally like us. Actually being faced with true difference is more challenging, and it's important to examine and challenge the mind's tendency to deem the new and unknown as a threat. This can't come in some easily digested prepackaged Progressive Inc. logic formula, it has to be a personal process forged emergently and dynamically by each individual looking at their own comfort zones, their own prejudices, their own blind spots, and doing the hard work of beating down new paths in what their minds and belief systems will allow as acceptable modes of human being. In short, you're reflexively rejecting the unknown simply because it's experientially unfamiliar. That's not being responsible or safe or looking out for the vulnerable. It's just fear turned into malice, like a child's reaction.

@Picogram I'm not saying its 100% impossible to reach Buddhist monk level of ''zenitude''. You see it a lot with cult gurus though, where its part of their attractiveness to seemingly have reached some unbelievable superior level of emotional control. People are like ''hey this guy must def know things the rest of us don't right?''. Unless you are talking about an actual Buddhist monk though, your first reaction should be wariness. Psychopaths (born, not made like sociopaths) don't really have emotions, so its easy for them to become the zen gurus... they are also the most likely to become cult leaders.

"If you want to GET a religion, start getting rich." ~ also L. Ron Hubbard, but you have to really read the pun into the quote. Not even the sum of all academic sciences (self-competing but still united) in the world have as much money as the 20th most popular false religion. If academic science were a religion/cult, then it would be automatically considered for the special tax-exemptions (including of land property) that false religions receive in the USA (and other strictly pro-mercantilism and anti-enforced-equality nations). Science would be the only cult (small religion) that does not require faith but specifically abhors such obvious pro-factional cultural stupidity. It would be the only religion to ask for public self-criticism and have a mechanism in place to evolve and change for the better without prioritizing the marketing aspect that false beliefs pressure toward, but in fact strictly prohibits any monetary relationships that would be unethical in terms of biasing any held ideas.

Kinda like "misery loves company" with the intention of getting out of that misery. People hear what they like, thinking because it's similar to what they already believe, they're no longer the only ones. Therefore, their way of thinking must be the right one. Thing is, this is likely something everybody has. People want to belong, regardless of how many different ways of thinking there are to say any single idea is right or wrong.

We're simply communal beings, and for the most part we all belong to one, whether it's a sports team with a coach, a church with a preacher, or a karate class with a master. To me this is really no different, and at the same time nothing special. A group of attractive people who are into common New Age / Spiritual philosophy and communicate through specific terminology that come together to be with like minds and have those beliefs reinforced. He's aggregated those terms and phrases and repeats it to them in his own unique way for inspiration. As long as they can leave at free will, don't begin to deify him, or become militarized, it's not really a big deal.

It's a lot of Law of Attraction, the Secret, Law of One, "ascension" stuff. Basically "you create your reality" and "you are god" so stop being so negative and you can have anything you want and manifest this 4 million dollar masion and live an Instagram Lifestyle if you really put your mind to it. Also that there are lightworkers and "good" people (service to others) trying to save civilization from the "bad" people (service to self), to exit the matrix, to get off this damn planet with all it's pain and suffering. There's a lot of bypassing of negative emotions. Imagine if Tony Robins mixed with David Wilcock or David Icke. It's not all garbage though, this stuff is essentially practical "magic" that has been taught from esoteric mystery schools for millenia. Useful stuff you can start applying to your own life. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. But cults are not formed because of one charismatic guy trying to form a cult. But of a buch of people seeking something and projecting it onto a guy who then feeds on that power exchange. The cult sort of begins to coalesce around them without anyone realizing it.

It is truly a tragedy in this day and age that so many people are looking for spirituality but don't have the first clue about what to look for in a true spiritual master. The most basic thing one can use to judge this is the simple fact that no true Master will charge any fees for his teachings or initiation and such. Anybody doing so should be rejected out of hand as a master or as having anything to do with true spirituality.

One is knowingly screwing people over with nonsense, the other type is truly insane and believe they ARE Jesus or a prophet of some sort and gullible, empty people are attracted to that. If the first gains enough followers and enough time goes by with the people basically calling him god, they will eventually turn into the second type.

He’s a cute kid and seems a little full of himself. But he is teaching the same things. And besides that, the word teacher to me has never been a correct terminology. @@johnshrader4051 People don't grin like they're overjoyed all the time if they aren't feigning it. Even people who are generally happy aren't constantly ecstatic, they're sad when they're hurting, angry when they're disrespected, neutral when they aren't feeling strongly, their emotional state changes like humans do. When people are frozen in blissful smile mode, either they're pretending to be happy when they might feel otherwise or just not feel anything or they've been brainwashed into doing so.

People will always be attracted to communities where they feel accepted, understood, and have a sensation of growth. People love getting into communities, specially ones that share a common idea or goal. The idea or goal doesn't really matter and can sometimes be horrifying but we love community for better or for worse.

Very very true. So many things thrive on this including gangs and the KKK. The basic desire is healthy but it can be misused. This is going to become even more of a problem in the future as our real, physical communities continue to be replaced by online "communities" that don't fulfill all of our real needs, so people seek out groups like this.

I don't see a problem. People seem to enjoy this program, nobody is forcing them, they found friends and do things they like to do. Nobody is harmed. Seems to me like any other community of people. I think that not everybody can be spiritualy strong enough to discover things on their own, a lot of people need a leader, which is historically proven. I don't, i wouldn't join a community like this but it's okay to let people do what they feel is right for them. He seems sane and doesn't seem to be saying anything crazy or dangerous.

Yeah. I guess I could say I was in a cult once. The head guy would start this with you without your consent. So he's just staring at you , after answering your question, or you answering his. I'm staring back, right? Because what tf is this? I don't know but it's not making me vulnerable. It's irritating me. "You're strong," he finally said. "You black women are always strong." I was offended by that statement -- -- so, because I won't let you get in my head like you've done all these other people -- I'm trying to be this "strong black woman". 🙄😒 No, I just don't like nonsense. And you haven't endeared yourself to me. Sigh DESPITE THAT, we stayed connected for years. SMH it's not that we didn't find knowledge there. It's that he was such a liar.

So, there have definitely been times when someone made me angry for saying I triggered them. I felt like instead of them sharing their feelings so I could change my behaviors, they were turning me, rather than what happened to them, into the bad thing. Talking openly and saying, “right now this is too much, I need to take a break,” is something we should already be doing. Telling someone that as a person they trigger you is like incarceration. If I told the cult leader it was too much for me and they didn’t let me leave and challenged me to dig deeper and stay, I would want to know what was in it for me. There’s old models everywhere anyway for a reason. Trusty and reliable. If you like the way you are a cult leader won’t bother trying to upgrade you, there’s nothing in it for them. 😮

On the one hand, in my experience, these states of consciousness where you feel inseparable from the universe/love/God are definitely an avenue worth exploring. On the other, I'm quite concerned with this magical thinking that often seems to go along with it. Preaching/proclaiming to break free from the "matrix" of illusion, only to get caught up in other bizarre narratives of aliens, secret governmental projects, and other spiritual mumbo-jumbo.
