"IF" someone is going to be just 'dingle-ball' honing the block, Do it with the deck facing down and main caps UP. That way you won't be getting honing grit flung around inside the block's nooks and cranny's that might get missed when cleaning. And you won't need to bring the hone that far to the bottom of the cylinder, because the rings never make it that far down anyway. I usually use diesel fuel for the dingle-ball hone lube since it helps cut better and doesn't evaporate like WD-40. And it's easier to clean with soap and water. And if the build is going to sit for a while.. For storage, wipe it down with "yeller bucket" tractor hydraulic transmission fluid. Don't know what's in it, but I put some in a harbor freight garden sprayer and tested it out on a old 327 block. And sat it just out in the rain and weather for 3yrs and it didn't get all rusted up like it would've without. About $60/5gal pail. Last you for decades on weather proofing engine parts that could "sweat" in high humidity climates. Even longer if bagged.

Just a few quick suggestions from a professional engine builder. To set the end float on the crankshaft, place a thrust bearing on the crank while the crank is still on the bench and check the clearance with a feeler blade, if you get .010 clearance there, ideally you would like to see at least 80% of that (.008) once the crank is installed. When you lay the crank in the bearings in the block install the thrust bearing cap and gently snug it down, then take your dead blow Tonya Harding and give the crank snout a couple good whacks and then give the rear of the crank (flange end) a few good whacks. Don't hold back, hit it good! Then torque down the thrust bearing cap and check the end float with a dial indicator. Available at Harbor freight for a reasonable price. I believe .004-.008 is the generally accepted range for end float. Also when installing rods and pistons, I like to rotate the block so that the bore is horizontal to the floor, I find it easier to guide the rod into place and I can torque the rod without rotating the block on the stand. Make sure you rotate the crankshaft two rotations after each rod is installed to check for interference with the block or crank and also check side clearance on rod when installed and especially after installing its opposite rod. Don't forget to clean the piston rings before installing! I wipe them with Marvel Mystery oil, you will be amazed at the gunk that is on a new set of rings. I am enjoying the series! Lots of good information here.

Really like this video!! That said I have a couple of tips, or at least the way I do things. For those of you who have not seen my previous comments I am a retired ASE Master Tech and retired Auto Shop teacher. I am 70 and have been building engines and cars since I was 17. Any hoo, on with my comments. I was always taught to do plasti-gauge with the crank and bearings dry as oil takes up clearance. Derek did you just forget to tell us that? Also old style big block rods like yours are forged. Quick tip to tell forged parts from cast parts - cast parts have a thin parting line and forged parts have a thick ( 1/8 to 1/4 inch ) parting line. If you want to see what I mean look at the crank and rods in this video. The crank is cast and the rods are forged. All that said, this is one of the best engine assembly videos I have ever seen, and trust me as a teacher I have seen a lot. Derek, keep up the good work!!!

I have read through the comments before posting this. So many have expressed my exact sentiments. Love your videos. Derek, you are the guy every boy would love for a father, uncle, or mentor. Omg, what I could have learned if I had a dad like you. I always wanted to learn to build an engine but was scared to death I didn't begin to have the knowledge to know how to approach it. You impress and inspire guys like me ( even now I'm older) to want to dig deeper into it. As others have stated, 99.999% of the guys on youtube are far more interested in showing off how smart they are, and what they can do, but don't have the slightest interest in sharing that information with others. You speak in common terms that dolts like me can understand what you are doing...but you go a big step further, and explain why you do it and why it's important. You portray a rare gift not common on youtube. Great camera shots, allowing the audience a chance to see what you are doing instead of just hearing about it with your back to the camera. I know it takes a lot of extra time and effort to go to that trouble, but I can't tell you how much your audience appreciates it. The best channels on youtube have always been the ones that teach others something. You are one amazing guy and the very reason you have almost 700K subscribers. You are the cream of the crop and a great example for every KZbinr. Thank you for all you teach us. Thank you so much.

Well, that must have been extremely interesting. I was paying enough attention to realize I was lost halfway through- but I kept on watching. I figure if I watch it five or six more times I’ll be able to understand it all. Fortunately, it’s well worth watching five or six times. I need to get more cold snacks. Thanks for another excellent video sir.

I really like how you thought about lubing the cam and bearings when you put that in. So many times I've seen videos of them being roughly inserted, or thought to myself by the time that cam gets to the last bearing there's going to be very little lube left on it. So full marks for common sense and attention to detail!

The rings diagram on a piece of cardboard and remembering that the caps were already torqued by the Red dot on the caps, what a fantastic engine build technique. Awesome explanation of bearing and shaft installation. Derek, I'm hooked on Vice Grip Garage!

This is why I love watching people building engines... because you might learn something. sometimes it's little things... sometimes it's big things but anyway I wanted to say thank you finally.... SOMEbody said it.... the piston rings move on the Piston. while it's running and there is no point in clocking them. I've literally proved this to my friends in the past. I literally just spun them and made sure none of them were actually lined up together and we put it together and you couldn't tell. Ran perfectly.

I've been really debating about coming over to the dark side. I've been a turbo 6 cylinder guy my whole life. Thinking about going to the LS... like a 6.0 or a 6.2 or maybe even a all aluminum 5.3... like the lc9. The only problem is... I'd have to go to an automatic and that's what's kept me from pulling the trigger. I'm on my 13th... no 14th transmission. They're made out of pixie dust and glass. I just can't afford the manuals. But I really like the gear ratios that are in the 6l80e or the 6l90 and there a dime a dozen In the junk yard. A little bit of boost and some LS in my life in a 2400 lb car. talk about a good time. Lol
