I'm black, American (from Texas) and I grew up swimming. All the other black kids were swimming, too. All the time, like sometimes every day. We lived just outside the city, we were not rich by any means. I never heard any of these blacks-not-swimming stereotypes until I was in my late 20s. We lived in a really basic apartment complex with a very modest pool, but they kept it clean and ready for the residents. White kids, black kids, Hispanics.... Everyone was in the pool having fun. Bones too dense for swimming?!?! How could anyone believe that for a second, at any age?! They never saw a movie or tv show with black people in water?! They just heard that silly stereotype and never questioned it, again? So odd.

i think this has more to do with WHERE and WHEN you grew up. I too grew up swimming. We had rec centers with a pool and a diving team. But i grew up in the 70s in a city were there were recreation centers everywhere. Many parts of the US do not have access to public pools or swim lessons. And historically, blacks were banned from swimming in public pools and some of these stereotypes originate from there I suspect. The dense bones belief seems like it's a way to tell a kid, who is not welcome at a public pool (or allowed to part take in swimming at a public pool) a reason why they shouldn't want to swim while sparing them the knowledge of the real reason why.

Exactly, the black people can't swim stereotype is just for America,I'm African and I can't remember when I started swimming that it feels like I was born knowing how to swim. We have rivers and lakes down here so as kids we used to go swimming and catching things in rivers and in the lake Kivu,Rusizi river and other rivers in the villages. I now live in Cape town South Africa and almost every black person I know can swim and they've never taken a lesson from anyone nor did they have a swimming pool

I was in the US navy for 8 years, I will say while I was in bootcamp I remember hundreds of people that had to stay behind and not graduate and stay in Illinois for an additional 3 weeks to train on how to swim and I'll just say it they were all of African American decent.

If a group in the USA can’t swim and has been pressured historically into not swimming through racism then it’s right to undo it and to realise what occurred in the past.

Maybe in the past the USA did not allow certain groups to swim, but it’s hasn’t been this way for a while. I was raised in the 80s saw plenty of black kids swimming in the same pool as me. Vice wants everyone to believe blacks are still being sprayed with fire houses because they wanted to eat inside a diner. We made so much progress and vice isn’t even aware of it.
