It may seem easy for you to say that legalisation and regulation can solve some of the problems in existing system that deals with drug; but you didnt take into account of the down side of legalisation. The reason why fentanyl is so wide spread is because of prohibition. There are dangers such as fentanyl and the uncertainty of the purity in heroin that are inherent in the black market. With legalization as a holistic approach of treatment and controlled prescription and distribution of the drug you would reduce death and eventually dissuade hard drug use with comprehensive treatment.

It is one of the most profound pathway to stronger drugs such as heroin. They eventually look for stronger substances for getting high, or whatever reasons that can not be easily pinned down. Pain killer is a highly regulated market, it still contributes so many problems related to overdoes. And you are suggesting regulated heroin market is the solution. And regulation is just a simple term for "allowing sth". But if the regulation allow people to produce and consume drugs, but it is hard to get. It is as well as prohibited because the need will create black markets. And the new trend of drug is synthetic drugs. Changing little bit of the structures of a classified drug would completely fall out of classification. This is almost impossible for regulation bodies to catch up with the change. And also you are assuming government is just acting reasonably, but how do we make sure that drug companies don't influence the government and we have a proper regulations. Look at the financial market? do you think regulation is doing just?

This is such a mind blowingly good documentary. It's a master formulation of classic Vice; Shane always does an excellent job. The visual cues are top notch. There are interviews that vary from the highest, most influential people to those hardest hit by this problem, and they still find time to interview the mid-level people expected to execute this policy. Honestly, this is the best vice doc I've seen. Entertaining, informative and factual. Good stuff! Please keep up the good work!

Just as the US did with the Contras in Nicaragua, and the mujahideen in Afghanistan. The war on drugs provides a convenient cover for secret wars which are really fighting for economic interests. In Colombia, it is used to displace peasants, so that their homes can be leveled, and multinational logging, mining, and agruculture interests can move in and set up shop. The war on drugs is far too profitable for the military industrial complex, prison industrial complex, and multinational corporations. There is a reason the war on drugs has not brought about a positive change: it isn't supposed to.

I was subject to the 10 to life mandatory minimum back in 1998. I have never been convicted of a violent crime. I was not caught with any drugs, and did not sell drugs to either an informant or an undercover officer. I was indicted based only on the testimony of people I knew where were actually caught selling drugs. Because of the fact that I did not snitch and the fact that I didn't actually sell anything to an officer or possession, I was subject to a Conspiracy charge that allowed prosecutors to simply "guess" as to what amounts of drugs I should be held responsible for at sentencing. By the way, I also took my case to trial. The jury was hung. I was tried again. On the first day of jury selection for my second trial, my lawyer admonished me to plead guilty. You see, during my first trial, the prosecutor had people testify that I sold them drugs whom I had NEVER laid eyes before in my life. And with the trigger for a ten year sentence being 50 grams of crack cocaine, they had one informant in particular testify that I sold them an ounce of crack per week for a total of a year. Again, I had NEVER met this person before in my life. And along with the lies that my co-defendants spewed, my attorney was afraid that the prosecutor would bring in additional liars in order to convict. If I was to be convicted at trial, I was in jeopardy of being sentenced to a minimum of 20 years and a max of life. This was in a Seattle court where the jury was all white. I was lucky to get the hung jury in the first place, and the prosecuting attorney (Jerry Diskin) was notorious for using dirty tactics and breaking the law to accomplish his ends. I was the only one out of 15 people to take my case to trial. Every single one of my 14 co-defendants testified against me at trial and lied in order to get a reduced sentence. The prosecutor put the fear of God in them by threatening to incarcerate them for upwards of life if they did not co-operate. So they had every reason in the world to look after themselves only. To make it clear, I sold no drugs to either an informant, or an undercover officer. I was not found to be in possession of drugs either. The way that drug conspiracy laws are set up, you can be charged simply based off of information that a person says, with no objective proof to back it up. Conspiracy drug charges are also notoriously hard to beat as well because the standard for conviction is so low. My avatar pic is of me during my incarceration in a Federal United States Prison.

Another option is to computerize the justice system... It has been discussed before and is becoming more of a reality!! What this means, is less spent on lawyers, judges, prosecutors and most of all it ensures a fair justice system. Also you don't have these prosecutors chasing after their 'stats' to ensure they get their high-salaries and also it can easily show statistics of police officers unfairly targeting racial groups and what not among many other useful benefits. Just think of a public defender who spends 5 minutes of his day working on a low-income case when you can have a very efficient computer that can compete against a thousand dollar an hour lawyer! Lawyers will loose out here, while everyone else will come out far ahead.

Interesting that the guy in the beginning was from Fort Worth, TX. As a person from TX, I can give some anecdotal testimony from watching some of my friends fight the system for dumb things. For instance... my friend wasn't making much money, so he couldn't pay for his insurance and since we live in a town that is fairly spread out, public transportation is basically nonexistent. Because his insurance was expired, he couldn't get his tags, then subsequently gets a fine for not having the insurance that he couldn't afford. Soon after, his license gets suspended. He gets pulled over again and is fined again for driving while license invalid, no insurance, and expired tags. Soon after that, he's pulled over for another minor traffic violation, the cop sees the warrant out for his arrest for unpaid traffic tickets (because he can't afford to pay them off and can't afford the down payment to begin a payment plan), then he fines him for license invalid, no insurance, and expired tags AGAIN, and then takes him to jail. My friend ends up losing his job (which ends the small amount of income that was barely taking care of his needs) and on top of that has multiple fines stacked up that he can't pay. Isn't the prison system great?

When the 1st guys brother started to get emotional it really got me. Idk the whole extent to his brother's crime other than what they said..but 19/20 years was alot. Recently in a neighboring State they let a murder go free for time of 2 years served. I don't understand it.

I wish people would have more compassion on those who are less fortunate than them, more love for those who have had tough lives, and more forgiveness for those who have lost their way. I don't care about your political orientation, I care about humanity, and the destructive effects reckless policies and cold hearts can have on entire families and communities. I know drugs are terrible, I've seen their effects on people around me. But there has to be a common sense response to the crime committed. I hope that one day I will have the capacity to help people who have gone astray but want to get their lives back. And to all those parents or perspective parents out there, please, PLEASE, take good care of your children. They deserve your time, attention, and love. That's how we keep families, and thus society, strong.

I use to follow the Republican party till i saw this very moment. Seeing Obama walk up yo greeg the prisoners made me ball... I said to myself finally a man with the heart of the people...one of the most honorable respectable gestures any President has ever done. From that day I gave up my political associations. “1.1 million fathers behind bars”, Why? Because poor people are determined to shit out children that they cannot afford. Almost the entire school bus empties out at the section 8 housing complex in my area. You already can’t support yourself, so why not bring innocent babies into the picture to ensue that you will never be able to get ahead, and your kids grow up with nothing. Then blame the schools, the government, whoever you can for your own poor choices in life. 72% of black children are born to a single mother. This film has cherrypicked the best inmates, but having been locked up myself for prescription fraud, I can tell you that the majority of inmates are not good people.
