My father was a photo journalist. Worked in South Africa during their revolution. I don't think my father went there intending to be in the "thick of it" he mostly took photos of leaders (I got some great photos of Mandela and De Klerk). . One day my dad was taking pictures of a march by Zulus in downtown Johannesburg. It all looked innocent, the Zulus were having fun with card-board cut-out shields. All of a sudden shots rang out from the buildings, there was a coordinated attack by the ANC in the city streets. A young white police officer jumped ontop of the photographers and used his body as a shield. He shouted that he was wearing a bullet proof jacket and that they needed to stay down. . My father realised that the young cop could easily be shot in the head or limbs, he was my age (at the time) and yet he was instinctively protecting my dad. On the floor and in a sense of adrenaline, my dad was able to take photos of another white policeman rescuing a young black Zulu girl from the bullets coming from ANC henchman. The police and their group all survived but many people died that day. . When my dad came home and saw me- he broke into tears. My eyes are swelled right now remembering this (it's been 30 ago years now) . Sometimes, in these states of conflict - who is the bad and who is the good guy suddenly goes all skewed. In Alessio's discussion (in the video) the scene at min 2:50 is about a very dangerous Isis guy being caught, were he not caught he could well have killed more people himself, but just for a moment Alessio shows who is the bad and who is the good guy suddenly got all skewed.

@@A.S.D442 Apartheid was horrific and people should never forget that it was a western creation which was a modification of similar systems of white supremacy which had evolved in the west. Nor should it ever be forgotten that no matter what was done by its practicioners including the murder of hundreds of unarmed school children it was widely defended, justified, and supported by many white people in the west, not just leaders until the the 11th hour. There were some nasty people in the ANC, but they didn't dominate it because there was hope for a negotiated settlement. Palestinians are right to be skeptical of any good will from Israel or its western backers after 70 years of con games.

@@thomasdoubting2730 do you really think these impoverished people who grow up in war zones know what they are fighting for? it's kinda naive to think the majority of them have an understanding, and aren't either chasing security/money/any sense of connection, or are being forced into it at gunpoint. kinda crazy you think that simple of a comment means i condone terrorism or am against democracy. the irony is that the worlds "greatest democracy" is the one who profits off terrorism. fact is that none of this turmoil would have occurred if the US didn't fund an Arab Spring to destabilize countries who tried moving away from the petrodollar. ALL countries who have tried ditching the petrodollar have been immediately terrorized, couped, invaded, propaganized and sanctioned.

As a refugee from Syria, who got shot and witnessed the brutality of ISIS, the fact that you are calling that man a sheep and portraying him as a victim disgusts me. if you knew the pain and suffering that these Libyan soldiers went through, like losing their loved ones in the hands of this terrorist, you will understand the anger and frustration that they have towards him. I don’t blame them for what they did to him, because if that so called sheep had any chance to kill you and behead you, he would in a blink of an eye and justify it by calling you an infidel. So maybe next time try to be more careful with who you portray as a victim.

I think the photographer wanted to highlight human brutality in general, what war does. When you look at it from a third person view, outside of taking either sides in the conflict. It's kind of a humanitarian approach of saying "look, here's a picture that describes how evil we can become".

3:57 This reminds me of one of the most poignant and tragic lines ever uttered in a war film; in the movie "Fury," when Boyd "Bible" Swan gives a dead serious, yet emotionless stare at their new, very green machine gunner and says: "Wait until you see it." "See what?" "What a man can do to another man." There is perhaps no greater irony in the fact that war can equally bring out the very best *and* the very worst of humanity.

The first month of the invasion of Gaza, which claimed over 10,000 civilian lives, is one of the bloodiest wars of the 21st century. Compared to the invasion of Iraq and the 2nd Congo War in the early 2000s. Not even Sudan, which probably has the second worst conflict at the moment, comes close to the current casualty numbers, which officially exceed 20,000. So it makes sense, also because of history, that Palestine is receiving now more attention. More justifiably so than Ukraine, which has only received high attention due to the support of the West.

Definitely the side of Vice that people put in high regards. If only we could also get some more geopolitical context, but that will as usual create division in the comments sections.

Hey vice your video about Israel's genocide in Palestine is late. What's the hold up? Did the IDF get to the recordings before you could publish them? I'm sure you made one since you try so hard to come across as a progressive organization. Or is that just aesthetics?

A person's capacity for benevolence _(especially towards their enemies)_ says a lot more about the strength of their own character, than it does the moral value of others. (as that capacity for forgiveness is always greatest -- in the greatest) ** _I'm defining the word "forgiveness" to mean the conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness._ ** Just as important as defining what forgiveness is, though, is understanding what forgiveness is not. Experts/psychologists make clear that when you forgive, you do not gloss over or deny the seriousness of an offense against you. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, nor does it mean condoning or excusing offenses. Though forgiveness can help repair a damaged relationship, it doesn’t obligate you to reconcile with the person who harmed you, or release them from legal accountability. ** Instead, forgiveness brings the forgiver peace of mind and frees him or her from corrosive anger. _While there is some debate over whether true forgiveness requires positive feelings toward the offender, psychologists agree that it at least involves letting go of deeply held negative feelings._ In that way, it empowers you to recognize the pain you suffered without letting that pain define you, enabling you to heal and move on with your life.
