To the entire Vice News team, on behalf of ALL Jamaicans, I want to say THANK YOU. Thank you for seeing the need to tell this story and follow up with it. Jamaica like many other countries is raped of its natural resources for false profit! The REAL treasure that should be exported from our island is our FOOD, agriculture is the most overlooked asset of our country as the world dives into the boom of GMO. We as an Island needed to SEE this, the severity of what is taking place is not being highlighted locally. My Jamaicans, here , there and everywhere what more do we need to see to stand up ???
@teerich20112 жыл бұрын
The one thing I'm most proud of as a Jamaican is that the food naturally grown doesn't have GMO and is delicious. Living in America its hard to get Jamaican good if you don't grow it or live in Florida. Many of us Living overseas would greatly appreciate more access to Jamaican grown produce and Jamaican baked foods. It's unfortunate there's not enough exporting of these to America and easier access to these goods especially in comparison to other international countries

I was about to say the same. Here in Australia we have had to deal with this stuff and face up to and own some damn ugly mistakes from the past and we are still far from settling it. There's been some seriously ugly stuff that has been done in the island states around Australia and some of it has involved Australian companies. The big problem is that no matter what government we elect they promise change and deliver NOTHING. You are so right this happening all over the world and its all to the benefit of a small minority of billionaires.

Not a small handful. There is maybe a 1% superrich elite, but underneath that there is definitely a surrounding bunch in layers from 10% to more that all still are benefiting of thieving and pillaging in the now and money from the past. Aka the upper middle class. Privilege is like interest on top of money in the bank in that way. And vice versa with the marginalised and the people that were and are exploited. The irony lies in the rage of the idiot lower class that is fighting against brown and black instead of joining forces and exteralise their rage to the ones that is really doing the plowing..up their behinds. What about the citizens that own land that have resources like ground water, a ground fed pond, minerals in the ground, etc, should the person that owns that property have the value of the property stolen out from under him by others who had nothing to do with the property? If you vote by direct democracy you're just allowing mob rule to decide what to do with it, and that is a slippery slope, next thing you know everyone's personal property will end up being subject to being taken away as soon as the mob feels they can profit from it.

Since, I know that Mining company has been there for years, I always wondered where in my country they were finding such an "infinite" supply. I found it deeply concerning, wondering if they had dug deep enough to find the center of the Earth. I really don't like this industry for this reason: Taking away from our land to benefit the advancement of other nations. I think we need to find other ways to contribute to GDP than this. My heart breaks for the people in Jamaica and all over the world being sold out by their governments who are in bed with corporations. The current monetary system where profit is put before people and planet is clearly not a sustainable model. It has been proven with the destruction of our beautiful planet and the fact that there are more and more people living in desperate poverty.

It's telling that the Prime Minister met with other chiefs but not the chief representing the disputed area. That's some cowardly behavior by the leader of a nation. Clearly, he doesn't want to be held accountable.

I do admire the Maroons and their bravery and for defeating the British on many occasions. However, the Maroons did not fight for Jamaica but for themselves. They signed a treaty to capture runaway slaves and to return them back to their owners in return for leaving them alone. Don’t recreate history.

What Audley is saying makes no sense. The mining takes place in pockets of land, yes. But if you keep approving for more and more pockets of land to be mined, it adds up. The fact that we're no longer the world's leader in bauxite mining shows that we're running out. When that happens, what next? And he's saying they need to "focus more intensely on the interests of our citizens". The whole video shows the people most affected by the mining don't want it. Then, at the end, the say it's a closed case? That seems democratic? The man said we neva put Andrew in power for this.
@gilanapatrick2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if there was a way to restore the land after mining, I don't think people would be so against it. If it didn't have the potential to totally disrupt the whole island's water supply, I don't think people would be so against it. Audley said they need to focus on the citizens' interests so meet with them. Go into the communities most affected and talk with the residents. Don't just say "case closed" when there have been no discussions had.
@georgemyers80972 жыл бұрын
A massive conflict of interest from the principals in a Government that owns 51% of mining leases, negotiated without the participation of the communities directly affected by this exploitation. The Government should recuse itself from this affair as it is likely that only a few principals sitting at the current negotiating table will benefit financially via modes of compensation that should be subject to third party internal audit. The island's ecosystem is under threat at time when global warming and other climate and environmental factors threaten water resources around the world. Water is a vital resource and Jamaica with its 200 rivers should e protected. Hopefully the Chief can petition the United Nations (UNEP) program to designate the Cockpit Country as a protected environment and extend human rights provisions to the inhabitants.

It's no surprise that Bro Gad is in support of this. For an educated man he acts like he's damn stupid. This ownership the govt has in Noranda is the biggest conflict of interest imaginable and Bro Gad acts is if his behaviour is honourable and honest. Mining in Jamaica is not really competitive on the international market, there's no scale. But there's enough ore for some people to make money if costs can be controlled. They need to get rid of the mining sector totally. Destroying your Land to enrich some company in Louisiana makes no sense. These international companies all have some part of their budget set aside to basically pay off locals. I suspect Bro Gad knows intimately how it works.

If someone might want to give a bit pressure on the boiler it may be helpful to go to the headquarter of Glencore and the embassy of Quatar in Bern, Switzerland. A cooperation with local environmental activists in Switzerland might be helpful. A good documentation like 1000 other ones before. That`s it? I'm shocked and have an unbelievable amount of disdain for the Jamaican government for this. I cannot comprehend how they've learnt nothing from history; how can a colonial ethos be so strongly embedded in their psyche that they can do this to indigenes and land. That primeminister looks incredibly ignorant; how can he hurl accusations about guerilla warfare and violence from a people that have a long history of being peaceful unless provoked (all whilst he is being extremely entitled and volatile)? Does he not understand the history of Jamaica?! It is the implementation of those tactics that saved and secured freedom for many Caribbeans. I doubt Jamaica has any legal recourse to those lands anyway. They prime minister should be highly embarrassed
