Absolutely awesome thank you, this is a great triplet exercise. Buddy made this famous? Thanks again, tried the first pattern tonight and immediately felt good about the pattern. A new day tomorrow I'll work on the 2nd pattern on the toms.

Great lesson, I can go to the wrong drum at low speed, and have doing it for years, using triplet fills, but I hadn't thought about the true implication of what a limiting factor that is in terms of speed. Thanks!

This is in the JOE CUSATIS Book: “Rhythmic Patterns for Drum Set” All of these variations and more can be found in that book literally hundreds of patterns for getting around the drum set with single Strokes with both triplets and 16th note patterns! Also many studies for crossovers one of the best books if not the best book for navigating the waters of the drum set! How artsy fartsy he is that! LOL

It's good to see you highlight the impossibility of playing L after L or R after R on different drums beyond slower speeds. It soon becomes obvious when sitting behind the kit, but is rarely mentioned in teaching material. The need to be on the correct hand after a combination to get to the next drum, cymbal, etc. Is a huge problem for percussion when sight-reading impossible and exactly what's on the chart, stroke for stroke, is required. Where a conductor, and other band members, don't appreciate these facts and think they know otherwise, it can be stressful and frustrating.

Excellent observation. I remember as a beginner asking my teacher why things like paradiddles mattered, etc... and he explained how, one use would be to change your lead hand, or to get around the drums without getting hung up on a less ideal hand... I didn't fully understand it then, and he was certainly struggling to explain it better. But it has sunk in over the years, and things like this.... are in that same vein. Play for any amount of time and you will trip yourself up by trapping your own hands... eventually we work out how to avoid this.... it's a hugely important thing...

I've played the 9 note pattern in a 'swing' setting. Basically on every 1/4 note of a 1/4 note triplet I play a triplet. I admire so many drummers but I'm still waiting for one to make my jaw drop the way that Buddy Rich did.Try & find the tribute Jo Jo Mayer paid to Buddy.
