That's a pretty handgun. I'd love to get my hands on a P38. It sucks that Walther will probably never revisit this gun. The P5 is as close as we get.

Or the Beretta 92 series. The only major user of the Walther horizontal locked breech system aside from Walther themselves. Basically all a Beretta 92 is is a simplified P38. Main differences is one recoil spring as opposed to two in the P38 and a frame wide enough to accommodate a double stack magazine as opposed to a single stack. Outside of that and slight external differences, more similar than different. Both 5" barrels, both use an open slide design so feed jams are nearly unheard of, safety/decocker virtually identical Both have similar field strip/maintenance procedures. Both have the same weakness: the locking block will eventually wear out but are plentiful and easily replaced. The P38 design is certainly unique in the service pistol world. Unique enough that only one other major manufacturer used it and have licensed it to a handful of others namely Beretta being the major manufacturer with the M1951 series and the aforementioned 92 series MAB of France, Taurus of Brazil and Girsan of Turkey

great pistole and definitively very rare, mine is from BMI (BGS - Bundesgrenzschutz). Many of the Walther P4s on the market today come from the stocks of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). After decommissioning, the weapons were bought and overhauled by Hammerli; the BMI wanted the BMI symbols on the slide removed and the symbols on the grip were crossed out.

P-38 pistols are very dependable, but, I have one issue. The front sight looks like a shark fin. What would be the best sight picture with a front sight that has such a unique shape? Does the tip need to be above the top portion of the rear sight, below the sight in the rear sight groove, aligned along the top of both? I tried various aiming points with no real success. Also, one of the springs under the top spring plate is broken. Only half of the spring works. I am sure the spring is so old that it should be replaced anyway. Anybody know if Wolff Springs or Brownell's has P-38 springs?

Although I agree with the P38 being a very influential firearm design post WWII. I feel as if the not as widely used STG 44 has a bigger stamp on history do to the obvious need when it was designed for military personnel to have a intermediate rifle round with semi automatic and full auto capabilities. Leading into the production of the AK and M16, the start of the world's largest arms race.. the cold war
