Day 27 of our Florida to Montana road trip we spent the afternoon in Vicksburg National Military Park. This is a Civil War Battlefield. The Battle at Vicksburg lasted a total of 47 days. May 18 - July 4, 1863. Total deaths are around 3,000 total from both sides. There were over 10,000 wounded and over 5,000 missing. It's a somber time in our nation's past. Just being there, it was hard to imagine a fight going on, on those beautiful green earth worked mounds...

The horrors of the battlefield have been transformed into a wonderful park of Remembrance filled with classical and stately memorials. This is a wonderful place to pause and reflect upon the history of the US. For me the amazing remains of the SS Cairo are also so very interesting to see. Great views over the Mississippi as well.

Vicksburg National Military Park is kind of amazing. I had no idea that each state involved had their own monument in the park. That is a lot to see. The USS Cairo submarine ship looks fascinating too. We need to go check this place out. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Hi Melissa this looked so interesting and I bet the kids loved it too. There were quite a few memorials there but you said they were all uphill ?
