Panama, Panama Canal - the Miraflores locks, great views of the Panama Canal! Let's travel to Panama in Central America and let's visit Panama City and the Panama Canal Miraflores locks. Let's visit Miraflores which is the name of one of the three locks that form part of the Panama Canal, and the name of the small lake that separates these locks from the Pedro Miguel Locks upstream.
Panama Canal, at the Miraflores locks we are going to view a largo cargo ship crossing the Miraflores locks and we are going to visit an old 'mule'. Mules are electric locomotives running on the lock walls of the Panama Canal and they are are used for side-to-side and braking control in the locks, which are narrow relative to modern-day ships. Forward motion into and through the locks of the Panama Canal is actually provided by the ship's engines and not the mules.
The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. Canal locks are at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 32.5 m (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded canal began commercial operation on June 26, 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, neo-Panamax ships, capable of handling more cargo.

The primary gear (6:55) in the middle is probably the one used for drive purposes and all three gears are most likely used with a transmission - which would have been above the axle and you can see is now removed. Last I read (a few years ago) Panama was dredging where needed to widen the waterway and running into the same problems as previous - movement and inflow of dirt from the edges being excavated. No, the new locks cannot be visited but could be seen in the distance..
