Father Mychal Judge was the New York fire chaplain and the first victim of 9/11. His body was captured on film being carried from the ruins of the twin towers. This is the unique story of a man considered by many to be a Saint.

Second, there are 10,000 Saints Catholic canon. Do you really believe that Father Judge would be the first gay Saint? Finally, Judge was who he was BECAUSE he defied church doctrine to give comfort to those that needed it the most… and he did it with his own hands. I choose to not believe in either a God or religion that is so petty as to not be able to see past sexual orientation.

I know, same here. When it happened, we didn't have access to all the interviews and testimonies - I really didn't know that even to this day, victims still suffer and die from over 150 cancers and pulmonary diseases from the asbestos. They called it "ash," but that was not ash. And all the ways people were injured: going blind from asbestos caked in their eyes, inhaling chunks of concrete into lungs, electrocution from the sprinkler system, the passengers crashed in the plane,, the 1st or 2nd degree burns of those in the elevators, the sky raining down glass shards, the concrete wedged in people's body parts, crushed in the rubble, severed body parts, getting crushed in taxi cabs or cars, etc etc that we hadn't known about from only watching the news that day

Same here. I've been engrossed for the first time since 9/11 - listening to the survivor stories is poignant, powerful, and full of detail from the original newscasting on that fateful day in 2001. What a wonderful, human & spiritual being! Father Mychal's beauty and strength of faith continue to inspire people both in the USA and all over the world. He was an earth angel and a saint.

He actually passed as the first tower came down. Everyone at the other tower was running for cover. As soon as everything settled a bit, they found him at the bottom of the escalator. If anyone has not seen the documentary made by the 2 French Brothers (sorry name escapes me) it is one of the best ones I have seen. Father Mychal is in that documentary.

I believe Mychal has been already canonized as a saint about a year after 9/11. In order to become a posthumous saint, you need at least two required instances where you have performed miracles for others. Mychal was the chaplain of the NYFD and he rushed to people’s aid, praying over them and comforting them. It s debated over how exactly he died. Some say he was tending to someone and was struck by a piece of falling debris while another account said that Mychal died of a heart attack. I’ve been to St. Francis of Assisi church a couple times; this was Mychal’s church. Many years afte the attack, I saw a small 9/11 memorial in the corner: there was a large scrap of twisted metal that fell off one of the towers with a gold rise sticking out if it. The memorial was dedicated to Mychal for his heroic sacrifice. He seemed like a kind man who lived as he taught: serving God and others. I hope he is tending to his flock in heaven.

It is 9/11 at it’s most meaningful moment. He does not look injured or tormented, but he looks at peace, as though he had just fallen asleep. A testament to his faith - a testament to the day. He is the first victim that could be confirmed as dead on that day . The jumpers could not be confirmed right away because of the chaos that was going on and the inability to identify the bodies who fell from so far and were so badly damaged that they weren’t confirmed till days and weeks after the buildings had fallen . So yes he was the first officially confirmed casualty of 9/11 because he was still in tact and all his fire crew identified him immediately and reported it out which confirmed him as the first death from the trade center disaster.

Ironically, the night b4 the tragedy I saw a biography on Father Judge. I was so impressed with his courageous spirit and strength he gave to the people he helped. They spoke of the tragedy of another time that Father Judge visited annually to support the victims, just as he did the day it happened (it was on Long Island). When I saw the Firefighters bringing him up the street after the South Tower collapsed I just screamed!! I cried out to God and a voice rang in my head.. "I will cross the others over so they will not be alone"..I have heard the voices of others who have died, but they are usually ones who are close to me..I was happy to hear his and believe he indeed was there, helping all those terrified and confused people into the realm of peace, love and happiness. Before he died, he Giuliani and others were inside the lobby of one of the towers... they've never replayed any of that footage... but every so often, you could hear a crash, and they explained it was the sound of another body falling, and landing on the roof of something outdoors. The sound was horrifying and I imagine it was never released again because of the sensitive nature due to the families that could be involved. I don't think they ever knew exactly how many jumped, or fell to their deaths, but I remember from watching the news that day, there were so many, and I imagine the choice between burning to death and jumping seemed easier. Smoke inhalation would be kinder if you could be certain it killed you before you burned to death, but I don't think they were going to be that lucky. If it had been me, I think I would have jumped too... at least most of my body would have been in one place, and not vsporized...

I remember hearing a priest had passed away from falling debris. This is the first time I learned of Mychal's story. I had someone say to me recently about LGBTQIA being a fad, a trend for these young people. She stated she wasn't now really gay. I haven't seen her for years. She told me she was just being gay because it was popular. Michal's story of ministering to the flock of God no matter who they were demonstrates it was not a time of being popular to be gay or to come out. I remember having lost friends to AIDS and the Church being anything but Christlike to its members including children with AIDS. Thank you Mychal. You life was a gift to others. May we learn from you. What a wonderful documentary.

I am very glad that this has so far shown that he was a HUMAN BEING, flawed, imperfect, and with what looks like a great sense of humor. He was very obviously loved and respected, and didn't seem to be full of ego. It's a shame that there aren't more like him. I am not a Christian, but I know that this represents what a good Christian is SUPPOSED to be. he was not the first victim but he was the first to be identified. and he did not have to be if he was not commited to helping others he would not have gone in but he cared about other peoples lives and thats what makes this man (just like all who risk their lives for others) a beautifull human who now is an angel.

God Bless you Father Mychal. As well as your spiritual path, you were the epitome of a "man". I had the pleasure of reading Rudyard Kipling's famous poem "If". It's all about a father giving advice to his son and passing on what makes a man. I'm sure Father Mychal is reunited with his father and I'm sure his father would attest that he is in fact, a true man. True men run in when everyone else is running out.

Father Mychal Judge was a beautiful person and an inspiration. I hope things are moving forward for his canonization. You know, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was made a Saint and it wasn't because of any miracles performed. It was because of the love she gave, her tireless devotion and her work with the lost members of society; the ill, the poor. Several people here have stated that they received miracles because of Father Mychal. The Vatican and our present Pope, need to be reminded of all the good that was Father Mychal Judge. This was a emotional story. I will always have his final picture in my mind. I can feel that he is still around helping. He truly was a Wonder-full man.

We have the pleasure in Australia of having a hand written letter from Dympna Judge Jessuch, Mychal's sister. he was thanking u for being the first to have flowers sent to the Armory and to 2 other florists after 9/11. It is a cherished piece as she thanks us and it also contained remeberances of Mychal

Any person who would rub the feet of aids patients during a time most wouldn't breathe by them deserves a sainthood just for that. Rubbing a dying persons feet is selfless act of kindness. I did it for my grandmother and she said it just felt so good. I'm not religious at all either, but bless him.

The first father and son to die at the same "call", the WTC responding firemen, had the youngest son spared because he was removing Fr. Judge away. Miracle? and martyrdom ... Rescue one and Ladder four can tell you more.

Mychal Judge was Martyred, was the representative of the Almighty, in his truest fashion, championing the ideals, armed only with his faith to save others while Islamic extremists chant god is great attacked Mychal's City, his people, his brothers and sisters in New York City. Before he went to NYC, Fr. Mychal Judge was a friar/priest at Siena College, my Alma Mater, in Upstate NY. So this hit close to home. May he and all victims continue to RIP. I cannot fathom that it has been almost 22 years since this happened.
