In January 2020, Hamed Esmaeilion lost his wife and daughter on a Ukraine International Airlines passenger flight PS752. It was shot down by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shortly after it took of from Tehran on route to Canada. The tragic incident happened amidst heightened tensions between Iran and the United States and days after the US carried out the assassination of Iranian major general and commander Qasem Soleimani and some hours after Iran retaliated firing dozens of ballistic missiles on American-led coalition forces. The Canadian Iranian writer and activist continues to fight for victims of that crash. There is now a case before the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) against the Islamic Republic of Iran saying it used weapons against a civil aircraft in flight in breach of its international legal obligations.
