I have seen this before. Last week I went to a very professional presentation of The Marriage of Figaro, Unfortunately when it got to the forest scene it reminded me of this clip and I lost it and started giggling uncontrollably My wife stuck her elbow in my ribs to quieten me down...It did not help. Thank you Victor. RIP

I went to see him at El Camino College in Torrance, CA, in 1984, when he was 75. I had a front-row seat. I laughed at the wrong time and got his attention immediately! He asked, "Vhat and vhere did you eat?" I was too startled to answer.

I like how the audience applauds after each part, because even though Victor’s just throwing away light generic examples of opera composition as a joke, the way he plays is so stunning and effortless you know instantly that if he wanted to he could write music better than Mozart.

Занавес поднимается, и вон из той кулисы (показывает на кулису) появляется тенор. In a single file. (труднопереводимая игра слов, что-то вроде "весь как один" (вместо привычного нам "все как один")). 4:16 (играет смешную пародию на любую оперную теноровую арию) 4:36 (публика взрывается благодарной овацией) Спасибо, я ему (примечание переводчика: тенору) передам. Слышу, что вы большие любители оперы. (сильно хохочущей даме вдалеке) Можно вас попросить пересесть сюда, к единомышленникам? (указывает на сильно хохочущих господ поблизости) Вы что там, яйца откладываете? (намекая на сходство женского смеха и куриного квохтания). (В недоумении смотря на оркестрантов, стоя спиной к публике): Эй, вы где?! (Поворачиваясь лицом к публике): А, вот вы где... Теперь он (прим. переводчика: тенор) прячется за деревом, и он не может её (прим. переводчика: героиню, сопрано) дождаться... во всяком случае, так предполагается. Теперь появляется героиня. Ей предлагается наполнить собой партию сопрано. (Прим: трудно переводимый каламбур. по-русски мы бы сказали "ей отведена партия сопрано", а в английском "партия сопрано была ИСПОЛНЕНА/НАПОЛНЕНА героиней"). Так вот (продолжает Борге), она (героиня) её (партию сопрано) не просто НАПОЛНЯЕТ собой. Она её ПЕРЕПОЛНЯЕТ. Она здоровенная... Эээ. Она - действительно большая артистка. (Игра слов, обыгрывающая буквальное и переносное значения эпитета "большой" в отношении артиста). Она вносит собой весьма весомый вклад в оперу (прим: ещё один каламбур). Ростом она под полтора метра. Когда лежит. (прим: то есть, не в высоту, а в ширину). She comes in in a single pile. (прим: совершенно непереводимая игра слов, поскольку она основывается на трудно переводимой игре слов ''in a single file'', переведённой выше. Но, если вкратце, это была заключительная фэтфобная шутка Маэстро по поводу стандартных (прежде) габаритов героини в любой опере). 6:30 (звучит пародия на арию любой героини-сопрано в любой опере) ...она прячется за другим деревом и совершенно закрывает его собой от публики. (прим. переводчика: значит, предыдущая фэтфобная шутка всё-таки не была заключительной) ...Пока вы смеялись, хор вышел на сцену... и ушёл с неё, уступая место баритону. 7:24 (поёт кусочек куплетов Эскамильо из "Кармен") ...но тут баритон обнаруживает, что перепутал оперу (прим: видимо, намёк на некоторую эээ... непрозорилвость баритонов?), и его увольняют. Теперь на сцене появляется бас, отец. Чем дальше, тем лучше. (непереводимая игра слов, основанная на созвучии в английском существительного "father" (отец) и наречия "farther" (дальше). также намёк на то, что в операх басам, как правило, достаётся роль отцов героев и героинь). 7:42 (исполняет смешную пародию на арию баса в любой опере) (прерывается, чтобы сообщить нам кое-что об этом басе): Кстати, он неслабо закладывает за воротник. (заканчивает петь) Как низко может пасть человек? (прим: игра слов, если переводить дословно, то "как низко может забраться человек", имея я виду и людей, опустившихся на дно, и способность человека голосом дотягиваться до самых низких нот) Итак, бас сообщил героине всё, что считал нужным, и теперь она исполняет свою арию смерти (прим: намёк на все оперы, в которых действие заканчивается смертью героини, таких как "Травиата", "Риголетто" и другие аналогичные) 9:10 (играет очень весёленькую арию, чей характер резко контрастирует с её трагическим драматургическим предназначением). ...И таким образом она умирает, закалывая себя кинжалом точнёхонько промеж двух здоровенных... деревьев, расположенных по краям сцены. The End.
