I've become a big fan of him... Which I wouldn't have expected. I mean I'm an Aussie, in your age group, who spent my early working life in the mining industry before life took some twists and turns in a totally different direction and now I own the majority of a performing arts and entertainment production company that is growing faster than I can keep up with (I won't name which company, I like to keep a very low profile.) I have always been a musician, writer and generally driven to be creative. So I have a naturally liberal leaning personality. But it's been people like Mr Hanson here and the man who introduced me to him, the honourable John Anderson (who has a great interview show if you're not familiar with it) that have made me stop and listen to the conservative thinkers more and more. Maybe it's also because I'm independently wealthy now, much wealthier than I ever thought I'd be, but the only other wealthy people I come into contact with are in the arts and entertainment industries; who needless to say, are all obviously insane. All of my friends are blue collar guys, just like me really, who knows what it's actually like to work on the family farm each harvest driving trucks or working 12-14hrs on a drill and blast crew in an open cut mine in outback Western Australia. It's strange because from the perspective of a man in the mine, I'm sure it looks nice to have money and be in the nice clean office having meetings all day. But man, if I wasn't responsible for the huge machine we've built and all those people who risked their careers on me, I'd take working with the boys any day of the week. I say all that because my presence, as a blue collar guy at heart, has my industry peers on the authoritarian left very shaken up. They're used to money from the state, we've raised everything through the market and can influence our future without the government strings attached. Men like VDH and John Anderson have given me a sturdy and practical philosophical structure of politics to lean against and resist the temptation to enter into bargains with the state. I felt politically fatigued for so long, but now I feel like there's a chance to take back the reigns from the insanity and that's exciting to me.

I am a former Republican moderate. I am also an academic and strive for rational debate. It is, indeed, nice to hear a the MAGA conservative point of view without the apocalyptic rhetoric I've heard from so many people who call themselves "conservative" (which is anything but "conservative" that I had come to revere in my 50+ years). Great points to consider, Mr. Hanson. I will incorporate them into my understanding of Trump's rationale.

Glad to find an academic who is intelligent. Only intelligent people listen to people with different perspectives from their own.

I agree it was a great conversation. I now understand why the conservative establishment support Trump. But I would like to understand what they were saying and doing under the Bushes. What he describes is systemic corruption and elitism. I find it hard to accept there was no alternative to a Trump to achieve the realignment necessary...what it says about the political class is really worrying.
