I am so glad that Victor Herbert and Antonin Dvorak were in New York City at that school and Dvorak was able to hear this piece. He then proceeded to write his own Cello Concerto, which is probably the standard by which Cello Concertos are judged. Thanks, Victor, for providing the inspiration! I really like this piece, too.

Harrell’s uniquely cellistic, powerful and amazing virtuosic skills and operatically highly overall convincing interps always blow me away!!! 😊🤪

Magnificent work and performance. The slow movement with its melody and variations would melt frozen stones. Thanks for posting-John

I was extremely amazed when I figured out my local radio stations had a classical station, but even more amazed when I heard this. I love the cello.

This is the last piece my brother played before leaving to college... it's very special :) Thank you! It's the most romantic movement of a cello concerto, in my opinion

Nice dreamy slow movement in this concerto. I like listening to it while relaxing with a large pink gin.

Hard to believe this is what inspired Dvorak to write the B minor cello concerto...
@robertoa.m.39848 жыл бұрын
I do not understand why you find it hard to believe. Herbert was a fine cellist and composer, and the 2nd mov(Bminor) is truly beautiful........after all, you must remember there is only one Dvorak!.....genius is hard to come by.

I actually think: thank G-d Dvorak heard this concerto!

Apparently when Dvorak heard this he grasped how to strike the balance so the gentle cello was not overwhelmed by the orchestra.

Reminds me of Schubert's Eb Piano Trio.

The first movement is Allegro impetuoso, not impertuoso.

I agree to a large extant with Rossinisan09 in that the cadenza here was really not necessary and J. Lloyd-Webber's rendition omits it altogether with nothing lost. I've personally never thought cadenzas belonged in music of the Romantic era in the first place. (Frankly, I also find them annoying in Classical-era concertante music as well)
