i love that "Street Scene" music at the end! i wonder how many crime noir films used it. So far, i've only seen three.

my review from a few years ago Just saw CRY OF THE CITY last night, a 1948 noir directed by Robert Siodmak based on the novel by Henry Edward Helseth, The Chair for Martin Rome. It stars Richard Conte and Victor Mature. Among the supporting are Fred Clark, Shelley Winters, Debra Paget and Hope Emerson. Screenwriter Ben Hecht worked on the script, but is not credited. Much of the film takes place around New York City, in tenement houses in Hell's Kitchen. and on the night streets of the city. Lloyd Ahern, the cinematographer, captures this perfectly. The story line is an old one, the hunter cop (Mature) chasing the hunted killer (Conte) Both were childhood friends growing up in Italian-American tenements. Conte is a killer but is innocent of one of the crimes he is accused of and from this the story unfolds. Time Out Film Guide said "The film has been highly praised by modern critics, and is viewed as an important example of the film noir genre." The Guide praises the realistic look and feel of the city: "Rarely has the cruel, lived-in squalor of the city been presented in such telling detail, both in the vivid portrayal of ghetto life and in the astonishing parade of corruption uncovered in the night (a slug-like shyster; a monstrous, sadistic masseuse; a sleazy refugee abortionist, etc)." Siodmak adds some expressionistic camera angles and shadows to this dark, tense film with multiple murders---it moves quickly and is exciting from beginning to end. All the the acting is good, including Mature who sometimes was labeled as just a hunk of beefcake in Hollywood. Like Mike Mazurki in Murder, My Sweet, Hope Emerson, as a towering, volatile masseuse with an eye for stolen jewelry, has a presence that is riveting .I won't forget her and neither will you after seeing this movie. Cry of the City is highly recommended for noir enthusiasts
