As always, it is a joy to 1) watch you perform wood and marine work and walk us through your work and thought processes 2) patiently and graciously mentor Aaron - these experiences with you will inform his entire arc as a man and a human 3) support your mother and family. Never fear that you are not providing sufficient quantity or nature of content. Eight years ago we signed on for The Adventure of a Wooden Boat. Everything that has happened, is happening and will happen is a part of that adventure. Just keep being Stephen and do what you do. Don't tell Arabella, but I'm really tuning in for the story of Stephen.

"A ship in a harbor is safe but that is not what ships are built for". Victoria is meant for use, and with use comes needed repairs. Luckily she was well built from the start, and is in exceptionally capable hands for her foreseeable lifetime. Great to see you again Steve, and all the best to you and your family.

You made the right choice about the paint. Bringing it to pristine condition is for those that rarely use it or have lots of free time/money. For everyone else it a constant cycle between slow decay and repair to good enough.

Great update, and good to see Victoria brought back to her new more utilitarian spec. I did point out to Bob during construction the likely problem with the forward end of the skeg but he did not pick up on it. Not only does it hit stones on the beach, putting a strain on the skeg fixings, it also prevents your rowing over things like seaweed and floating buoy ropes. It's hard to beat a brass rubbing strip from fore to aft. They last for years and then are easily replaced. It's what I have on the boat I built.

For a dinghy that spends a lot of time on rocky beaches, I'd consider some kind of metal strip on the keel to protect it from bumps and knocks. Depending on the shape of the hull it can be anywhere of really easy to pretty complicated, but if your dinghy is in pretty regular contact with rocks, a metal strip will significantly prolong the time before major maintenance is necessary.

Missing you guys on the water. I am in Rockland for a few days. I went into the town pier and wondered where Arabella was.... but not for long as she is pretty much front and center right near the black 210 and just a little outside of Neal Parker's schooner conversion 'Meteor'. She (Arabella) is looking fine. A little forlorn but not forsaken. I will have to leave west bound (for the Gloucester schoonerfest) before you make it back to Rockland. So I miss you guys but glad to know the time you spend away is precious and noble. J.Ray :)

Great work as ever. There are always many ways of doing things and, having built a few small dinghies myself, i think I would have faired the front of the skeg to the hull with thickened epoxy and put thickened epoxy fillets down the sides of it before then glassing it. I would also recommend a bronze rubbing strip from stem to transom as well as the extra glass to help reduce the beaching damage. So good to see young Aaron at work again and restoring our faith in human nature 😊 Prayers and best wishes to you and your family.

@@RicktheRecorder agreed😁 TBH, anything tougher than fibreglass. Either that or a sacrificial wood skeg but that would probably need annual replacement and be prone to breaking away as the stern skeg was.
