I think Victoria is the most brilliant polyphonic composer of all time. As each generation gets more stupid, the likelihood of any contemporary composer being a true peer of Victoria, Palestrina, Byrd, etc. is almost 0%. When the Catholic Church performed euthanasia on its own music and forced New Dawn Music down our bleeding ear canals in the 1970's the masters were kept alive at Tower Records, one aisle over from KISS and Black Sabbath. And now the masters are kept alive on KZbin. The irony is uncanny: the Church expunges herself from something truly holy and brilliant, only for that thing to be picked up by the most unlikely characters. Like a lion released from its cage, this music is forever in the wild, regardless of whether the Church ever comes to see the lunacy (or darkness) of her decisions. Victoria will live forever because it transcends time, bypasses our broken flesh and speaks directly to our God-given soul, with which Victoria, as a faithful priest, was familiar.

Tge group singing this are Fieri Consort was founded in 2012. Fieri Consort is one of the UK’s most exciting vocal groups, offering a unique blend of technical precision and theatrical innovation. Performing without a conductor, Fieri presents innovative and engaging programmes, and specialises in the rich and varied tradition of 16th and 17th century Italian repertoire. Performing a cappella, accompanied by early instruments, with guests and even with members of their audiences, Fieri’s interpretations are informed by the collective experience and knowledge of the group. Their voices blend beautifully and their sound is exquisite, but they go beyond that… they also understand the subtle nuances of text-based phrasing that so well suits the renaissance repertoire they sing. This is such an exposed way to do this piece, one on a part, yet how delicate and with the color shadings of stained glass in early light as the imitations are passed along. Victoria is the most expressive setter of texts in that period, I believe, and the purity of everything here, from vocal color to intonation to fine dynamic balance, all serve this gorgeous little reflection on the wonder of humble animals at the birth of Jesus. I came looking for a new performance of this favorite that I had not yet heard, as part of my Christmas season. How wonderful to find this! A joyous and peaceful Christmas to all.
