The first part of my trip to the Victorian High Country in November 2024 in my 2012 Land Rover Discovery 4.
The first couple of minutes of this episode covers the 2,561km from home in Mackay, Queensland, to Mansfield in Victoria, and includes random things I thought were interesting. I had my 84 year old mum with me. We did a road trip from Mackay to Canberra where a left her with my aunt while I went on to Mansfield.
When I arrived in the Victorian High Country I fuelled up in Mansfield and decided to head out to Kennington to the Pub - an 90km round trip but the pub had closed by the time I got there.
My trip was a tag along with Adam of Tracks 4x4 Tagalong with whom I have done a number of trips including a number of Simpson Desert crossings a couple of Hay River Trips, Googs and SA and also the Canning Stock Route.
There were eleven vehicles in our group in total, so a big group.
Day 1 of the High Country trip proper covered 140km from Mansfield to Mount Lovicks.
We aired down at Sawmill Settlement and headed off up Doughtys Road and stopped at Sheepyard Flat for smoko. Then onto Brocks Road before we dropped off the two trailers in the group at the start of Bluff Link Road. Then it was Bindaree Road and the Monument Track up to Craigs Hutt for lunch.
We then back tracked down Clear Hills Track, Monument Track, Bindaree Road and Bluff Link Track to collect the trailers.
Then it was onto the Bluff Track for the rest of the day to our camp at Lovicks Hut.
Day 2 covered the 56km from Mount Lovicks to Wonnangatta Valley. We continued on the Bluff Track in the morning and then onto the King Billy Track stopping at Howitt Hut for smoko. We then tackled the Zika Spur Track down to the Wonnangatta River for a late lunch. Then we followed the Wonnangatta Track to our camp for the night on the river at the Wonnangatta Homestead.
