Victorian London Toffee Apples | The Night Circus | In Literature

We're going down a rabbit hole exploring what toffee apples 'really' are, across cultures, history and language. Are toffee apples and caramel apples the same? Do the British and Americans describe 'toffee apples' the same way? And where did they come from?
Inspired by the apples dipped in caramel in The Night Circus, I took a little journey, just in time for Halloween.

Absolutely fascinating background on these! Thanks so much for making this video. The Night Circus is full of delicious imagery, and so is The Starless Sea. Morgenstern really went off with the food descriptions 🤣I tend to find the lighter colour, soft caramel made with dairy that's common in US grocery stores way too sweet, so this looks like a great recipe. After googling the difference between treacle and molasses, it looks like molasses is (are?) darker and treacle is closer to golden syrup. If I can't find treacle I'll experiment!

So true, her food descriptions are incredible! Haven't read her other book yet- will have to add to my list! When I was checking US grocery stores online, it looks like treacle is sometimes available and sometimes it's called something else? Let me know if you can figure out! The names of ingredients across different countries always gets me 🤔 I actually tried the molasses they sell here before I did treacle, and it was thicker, bit darker (beautiful colouring!) but way too bitter. But you're right, treacle is more like golden syrup is consistency, has a hint of bitter so not sickly sweet and is darker.
