Makeup History -1970 - The BIBA Look

Many years ago, I met a girl who worked in Biba when she came into the shop I worked in when I was 17. She was so trendy and I so wanted to look like her. She was a few years older than me, and she was wearing a Biba dress, white boots, and she had wonderful red hair cut by Vidal. What fascinated me was she wore huge fake eyelashes which were the same colour as her hair, and the look was finished off with ginger eyeshadow. Amazing!

This video was awesome, beautiful lady, another great channel, educated me. I was born in 1969 and my eldest sister was 18 in 1974, and I got to see all this first hand, she had a black dress that tied at the back, satin type material, I used to watch her getting ready to go out. She had a hair cut like ABBA Frida circa 1976.

I'm so happy to have come across your video ..I actually worked for BIBA in the 70s..I had all the lipsticks and LOVED the Brown..I' wore all the colours..I followed a band called Roxy Music and Bowie so BIBA was at EVERY gig. The major difference in eye makeup then was our super-plucked, thin eyebrows. Bette Midler really helped influence that in the early 70’s, and you can see the influence all thru his he 70’s. Thin, thin eyebrows.

I lived through the Biba era (and sadly it’s demise) visiting both the original store and the second larger store every week. I would mention that the Biba makeup look was not a “theatrical” look created for photography shoots, and was worn by all of us in full everyday. I was an art student at the time, but you saw Biba makeup on all the trendy girls. Clearly you were not in London at the time. Biba clothes whilst costing less than traditional clothes were still pricey by todays standards and most people had to save up for an outfit. I still have all my Biba clothes. I became a makeup artist and trainer and went on to set up the makeup brand for Miss Selfridge within the Selfridges store in London in 1978. Kindly note there is no ‘s’ in Hulanicki.

I wore the Biba perfume in the early 70s. I have not found anything as wonderful after that. I loved Biba, Mary Quant and Yardley. I spent some time in Germany back then and I think the German girls loved the Biba-look as well.

I wore it too. I used to hang out in the big shop in Kensington. I still remember the scent and the beautiful black glass bottles .I had the bottles for many years then got rid of them I wish it could be reproduced. Regis Huet was really responsible for creating the 'Biba Look' in respect to makeup. The fact he was very involved in Biba never seems to get mentioned. I knew Regis relatively well and have a copy of his unpublished autobiography, probably one of few people who do. Regis went on to work with every celebrity, magazine and photographer until the late 1990s, becoming one of the most in demand makeup artists internationally for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if Richard Sharah was involved too, whom I also knew, although I can't remember for sure. But he was around at the time and best friends with Regis. Of course Sharah went on to become famous and created some iconic looks for Bowie.

I was aware of Richard Sara. However Regis Huet is a name I haven't come across yet. Thank you for mentioning him! From what I'm understanding as I scour the internet : he worked on the makeup of some the campaigns and in helping developing the actual products. But the ideas themselves and colour stories were Barbara Hulanicki's ideas.

I still wear these styles. Biba was the grudgecfrim the 60’s to the 70’s. In the punk, then New Wave & post-punk clubs the mod and Biba styles were popular. But in the US we were much more influenced by fashion akin to our space program, like boots, especially white boots.

@@kateh2893 there is a wonderful west coast author, Eve Babitz, I was reading a compilation of her best writing for magazines, and she doesn't mention twiggy or any of that. Although she wrote about Fiorucci, a brand that appeared in the late seventies and largely based on the Biba model.

I still have her Seventeen workbook, which I highly recommend getting a copy of if you can, if you can't let me know, I might be able to scan mine for you. The other model of the day was of course the very beautiful Ingrid Boulting. We would be wearing our Quant or Biba make-up (Mary had a shade called Browned-off which set the look off perfectly), dressed in the maxi-coat and high boots we could ill-afford with our graphic design portfolio under our arms, going into the Studio to apply for a position, wafting a trail of Alyssa Ashley Musk, Quant AM or Biba, and the Director's Assistant would be like, ``Oh, I like your coat ...'' I do think, though, that we should be cautious of too smoky eyes or lips or we risk The Nightmare on Elm Street-effect. Just a thought! Otherwise, re-live Andy Warhol and all the rest. Keep it alive in the present. Lovely presentation, thanks.

The lipstick was from Bite Beauty (shade name "Kale" now defunct!!! And the lashes are by a Korean brand called "Darkness" and the name of the style is "Romantic". A quick search shows they might not be produced anymore. Just get a pair that have spiky bunches that criss-cross!

Very interesting. You forgot about Queen, they were heavily connected to Biba, Freddie Mercury's girlfriend worked at Biba. Think of the Bohemian Rhapsody look with the 4 images that was certainly inspired by this type of look, or at least by the silent movie look.

Bowie credits his then wife, Angie, for getting him into being more fashionable. Freddy Mercury's girlfriend used to work at Biba as well. Either way: it was the zeitgeist of the moment!

I looked up her bio and have to wonder if she went to the same school as my father in Ain Kharem outside Jerusalem, where Polish kids were taught. Her father’s fate is very sad. My own father close enough to the King David hotel bombing for items to shake in the room he was in. I will have to learn more about Barbara. She didn’t correct you, and I don’t know how she or the Anglo public said her name, but hoo-la-NEETZ-key is correct. In purist Polish, the n is pronounced like the Spanish N with the squiggle, or the Italian gn as in lasagna or anglo ni in onion, and her name would actually in -a, to match her gender.

I was born in 56, we never called this style Biba. It was just Gathas in style, which we all considered Mod. Most of the very trendy ones were too expensive for us, and we’d sew those simple shifts ourselves.

The green and red are complementaries, closest in values on the colour-wheel, strong together but not exactly clashing, while black and white are of course on the very opposite of each other. The hat is important. Really germane to the look. See the Coty Masumi advert: Masumi and friends ... that is so Biba. Helena Rubinstein especially designed the make-up for Theda Bara back in the 20s when the camera began doing close-ups. Later, Twiggy would pick up on this with her doe-in-the-headlights make-up - all eyes and lower painted-on lashes, big lids, but she did apply three pairs of false-lashes by then. How could she still keep her eyes open, she wondered. Quant's Come Clean would not last long to remove all that paint. Gently does it for the delicate eye area. Marisa Berenson actually invented the lower individually applies lashes which were featured in many of her photoshoots for Vogue. There is still some Biba available on Etsy, though somewhat pricey by now. In the end Biba were virtually giving away the last of their products just to close down the store. It was the end of an era. Sad, but we will love it forever ...

Another person left a comment on this very slip of my tongue. Because the look itself is very intense and I must admit was not yet used to seeing myself like that! But today, I would have gone with a cherry red -- that deep dark blood wine red is a bit too vampiric. The monochromatic palette of the jacket and the lipstick makes the look easier to digest for the eye !

You are wrong about the rest of the world hating the Biba look. It was huge in Australia. All the late teen girls around me adored the Biba look. A prized possession was a Biba lipstick brought back from London.

fascinating! thank you so much! iirc, Lou Reed acknowledged that he had gotten that black nail polish at Biba in London 🖤🖤 (which of course did not exist in the central NJ rural/suburbs where i was growing up -- however, the Woolworth's in a nearby town started carrying "Ardex Nail Cosmetic" in black, black with glitter, green, blue, white, purple, and every other shade you could imagine -- so of course i saved up my school lunch money and bought nail polish instead of lunch, ha ha! . . . David Bowie, Lou Reed, Candy Darling (gone WAY too soon, but her influence has never left me -- i read Jan Morris' "Conundrum" when it came out in 1974 -- but, i think it was thanks to Candy Darling that being what now would be called "trans" was never a negative thing for me, gosh, i was "jealous" of how glamorous Candy was!), T. Rex, Mott the Hoople, etc. etc. etc. -- all HUGE influences on me when i was in junior high and high school (even though i was trying to dress all in black by 5th or 6th grade -- 1970, 1971 -- influenced not only by all those old black and white horror movies from the 1930s and 1940s, but "Dark Shadows" was wildly popular at the time!) . . . and as others have commented, i think a lot of the Biba look was in turn influenced by early 20th century films, going all the way back to the silents, when film itself was still somewhat in its infancy . . . also true, some of us really did embrace this look for "everyday"! the skinny, almost nonexistent eyebrows (i did not know about Frida Kahlo at the time, but i was only 13 or 14, and my thick bushy brows started to connect into a "unibrow"! AND i wore really thick glasses -- so all you would see were eyebrows and glasses -- i got totally drunk one night and plucked out every single hair -- i was happy and relieved, but my Mom was horrified!), huge platform shoes, velvet clothing, rhinestones, glitter and sequins on our eyelids, etc. etc. (we looked more like we were on our way to see David Bowie, instead of just going to high school, ha ha!) . . . there was a small Biba shop at Bergdorf Goodman, went there with my Mom and younger sister when i was 12 or 13 (RARE trip to NYC, we got to do this only bc Dad's older sister was married to a man who worked for the railroads, so we did not have to pay for transportation) -- i fell in love with EVERYTHING there, especially these pale grape/lavender high heeled suede boots, and ALL that makeup :) . . . i was not "allowed" to have any of that, but my Mom did let me get a ribbed scoop-necked top (in the same pale grape/lavender as the boots) and a deep burgundy cloche hat . . . they are both long gone -- but thank you for bringing back this flood of Biba memories! xoxoxox

Thank you for your critique. it is precisely while watching the Biba video on my tablet that I noticed the sound issue, that you so kindly pointed out. Since February of 2021, I have been recording on a better microphone, and playing with compressor and EQ settings. Each video I make is taken as an opportunity to create better quality content!

I started to go out on disco around 1978 and there where not many with makeup at all in my country if you warent living in the capital. In the countryside it was low key! Blir on the retlig and cake mascara and Done lipgloss that smelled and taste csndy. I went to italy and came back with green snd golf as eyeshadow and boy- i got so herrased for it

Barbara Daly developed the Biba make up for Biba- this is a well known fact- so very questionable the level of research done for film- read From A to Biba by B H

Dear viewer, first of all thank you for taking the time to view my little video. I do understand that Mrs Daly was the one that actually painted the faces of the models. However if you look at Mrs Hulanicki early sketches available in the book THE BIBA YEARS: 1963-1975 then you will see that she sketches the Biba girl look. She is very gracious to attribute this to Mrs Daly. Like many creative things it takes many creative minds to crystallize an idea into reality.

@@makingupthemagic I feel the penny has not yet dropped. I'll give a lesson Barbara Daly, of who you claim no knowledge was infact the first 'star' Make-up artis. Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Barbara Daly along with creating the Biba make up Range for BH was also the make-up artist on'The Shining', 'Barry Lyndon' and 'Clockwork Orange'. Maybe you've heard or even seen these films. Barbara Daly also did Princess Diana's make-up on her wedding day, when she married some guy titled The Prince of Wales. A event watched by millions around the globe but obviously not on your planet. In my opinion, to dismiss the work of Barbara Daly and claim the BH is just being kind is to belittle the work of another artist. Something Barbara Hulanicki would not do, she it too gracious a human being.
