Join me step-by-step as I recreate a late Victorian/Edwardian bib apron! I designed this apron by looking at examples of similar aprons in drawings, books, and magazines from the 1890s-1900s. Often referred to as a nurse's apron or kitchen apron, the bib and full skirt help protect your garment from dirt and grime. We might refer to a garment like this as a "pinafore apron" today!
This style of apron is perfect for a Downton Abbey cosplay or Alice in Wonderland cosplay. Wear it to fulfill your cottagecore or ghiblicore dreams! It's a neat and functional apron for use in modern kitchens, too!
You'll find the full instructions, free pattern, and cutting diagram here: pourlavictoire.blogspot.com/2...
CORRECTION: Sew the straps to the bib right sides together. Sew the skirt panels right sides together.
This apron is an easy project that can be accomplished in a few hours. It requires 2 yards of 45" wide fabric. It can be customized with tucks, ruffles, lace insertion, or embroidery, and it's suitable for hand sewing, machine sewing, or a combination of the two.

Honey don't give up on trying to make aprons. I kid you not, I had never made a apron. I've always done throw quilts or quilts. I seen a video of a very pretty apron. I decided to try it. The skirt was in 3 sections of ruffles. I tried it with some ugly material I had lol 😆. I did it, I impressed myself. Right now just need 2 more ,of course these are simple aprons. I'm making for my grand daughter's daycare classmates. I have had more trouble with the simple ones, than the 1st difficult one I tried. I have enjoyed so much, I have pictures of the ones I want to try. Never give up 🙂🙂 you just keep trying. You got this 👍 🙂 God bless you 🙏 I was hoping I could post the apron, but I just can't get it 🙄😒

If anyone needs it, I changed the measurements given in the pattern from in to cm: Pattern pieces: All pattern pieces include 0.5 cm seam allowance Bib: Cut one 24.13 cm x 40 cm Straps: Cut two 9 cm x 84 cm Waistband: Cut one 4.5 cm x 57.15 cm Waistband facing: Cut one 4.5 cm x 57.15 cm Ties: Cut two 6.50cm x 76 cm Skirt: Cut one 88 cm x 112 cm, and cut two 88 cm x 37 cm (this will vary if you’re using narrower or wider fabric; generally, avoid having a seam down the center front; the apron skirt should be at least 1.4 meters wide).

This is PERFECT. I grew up doing 1830s-1860s reenacting as a kid and those aprons are so comfy and functional. Now as an adult I just haven't been satisfied with any of the aprons I've seen for sale. I just kept wanting *more* volume in the skirt, and a defined waist. You've completely nailed the look I want, and like another commenter said, I can actually figure out what you're doing! I had tried to make a super cute frilly 1930s repro apron as a teen, but when I got to the waistband, the directions exploded my mind and I couldn't go any farther. Thanks for giving me hope that I can do this!!!! (P.S. since it's 4:30 a.m. I probably just overlooked it in my exhaustion, but did you say how many yards of fabric you used here?) Thanks again!!! 🎉🎉🎉

I don't know if it was ever done, but I can imagine a deep hem would be useful on an apron as a potholder. Maybe even a full triple-layer, rather than a quarter-inch turn and double layer. I don't know, because I've never done either. But I do feel now like I want to experiment and see which I like better.
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire 3 жыл бұрын
Oooo, that would be a brilliant, simple way to make this apron more efficient! I have a wool apron and linen apron that I've used as potholders, but the fabric was thicker and more textured than the cotton I used here.
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 3 жыл бұрын
@@Pour_La_Victoire Maybe a hem facing of wool could do the job? Wool would be better anyway, since it still insulates when it's wet. We all know how cotton cloths don't insulate at ALL when they're wet. I've never heard whether linen does or not.

You can probably use the width for the apron skirt given in the video, as the apron skirt is VERY full. Other than that, probably widening the bib (the bib + straps appear wide enough to span across the bust in many period examples, so you can use that measurement for the width of the bib) and lengthening the waistband will have you covered. Good luck and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

This is a good video, Trying to find historical apron patterns for this era hasnt been easy. That said, I have a few questions. With regards to the waistband and ties, wouldve it been easier for your to make the w/b and ties all one piece with notches to mark C.F, apron and apron bib placement? I have seen aprons where in place of buttonholes for the shoulder strap is longer, crossed at the back and then put through loops at the ends of the w.b and tied , forgoing the need for button and buttonholes..have you seen anything like that? what are your thoughts? great video btw.
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire Жыл бұрын
Great questions! I certainly could've made the waistband and ties all in one piece, but I found many original examples had separate ties (in some cases, the ties were only one thickness of fabric hemmed all around, rather than folded in half) and wrangling such a long tube of fabric might be tricky. I have seen the aprons with loops and extended back straps so that is definitely a valid option... I just truly enjoy making buttonholes so chose that for this particular project :D

Don't know where i saw it (i think ww1/2 nurse vid), but they had the buttons on the waistband and the hole in the shoulder straps. That way you only needed to adjust the buttons when someone else was going to wear it. Not saying that you're approach is wrong.

That's a great technique for size adjustability! It makes sense that that level of standardization and size adjustability would've been used in a nurse's uniform.

Hi, you can easily adjust the apron to accommodate larger sizes by increasing the width of the bib and waistband.

Ok so I’m trying to make this apron. So when I sew the skirt panels, you say to put wrong sides together. I have directional fabric and if I do wrong sides together the seam is on the right side. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Right sides together so the seam is on the inside of the skirt?
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire 2 жыл бұрын
Oops, sorry about that! I misspoke in the video - the skirt part of the apron does end up with the seams on the inside, so stitch the panels right sides together. You can attach the panels wrong sides together if you use French seams.

@@Pour_La_Victoire haha yes I noticed that the second time I stitched it and then I didn’t like the look so I ripped the seams and did the panels right sides together and it came out perfectly!!! :). Thank you this has given me purpose after not sewing for a bit. Was in a rut and I’m gonna be doing a mother daughter tea party in the spring, I’m practicing making my own Victorian style apron now! So I’m glad I found your video! :)

@Pour_La_Victoire

Hi, yes, the layout is the pattern. All you have to do is draw the shapes, according to the cutting layout, on your fabric.

@@Pour_La_Victoire Hello, me again. Is this a one size fits all pattern or will a bigger person need to adjust any of the measurements? Do you suggest any alterations for bigger or smaller bodies?
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire 3 жыл бұрын
@@rachelAisme for a small person the apron likely doesn't need adjustments (except perhaps reducing the fullness of the skirt part as desired). To make this apron fit a larger body, increase the width of the bib and increase the length of the waistband and straps

What fabric are you using?
@Pour_La_Victoire

I used a plainweave cotton fabric - it goes by the name Pima cotton or Pimatex cotton. You can find this fabric online at Dharma Trading Co.

I used a pima/pimatex cotton fabric. Cotton broadcloth (a bit heavier) or cotton lawn (a bit lighter) would also work.

Yes, 3 yards of fabric should be enough. You can use less fabric in the skirt part of the apron if needed 🙂

So after ripping the seams twice now following what she said in the video by putting wrong sides together. It should actually be RIGHT SIDES together. I’m doing fabric that’s directional not a plain white like she’s doing. Although either way I think it should be right sides together so the seam is not showing on the front of the skirt.

Approx what measurements would I need for a 10 year old girl? I need to make several for Victorian day. Thank you
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire 2 жыл бұрын
You could scale down the skirt part to be a total of 36 inches wide and maybe 20 inches long (adjust depending on her height). The bib can be shortened by an inch. The straps would need to be adjusted according to her height (you can lay a tape measure from the front waistband, over the shoulder, across the back to the back waistband to test optimal length). Good luck!

Very nice video, but I think attaching the straps to bib, instead of wrong sides together, you may have meant to say, "wrong sides up". Also, next time, could you please use a fabric that has an obvious wrong side/ This was hard to see when both sides of fabric were white. Thanks.
@Pour_La_Victoire
@Pour_La_Victoire 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You're right, it should be "wrong sides up" -- I'll see if I can change that in the video. I think my next version of this apron will be in a cream check, I'll be sure to pick something with a distinct right and wrong side. Thank you so much for your feedback!

Audio is weak even with all speakers at max volume. White fabric on white backgrounds are not viewable for a tutorial/demonstration; a piece of colored poster board as background would help with contrast.
