my mom taught me this when I was 7 and I do this everyday, except my rags are shorter, so I don’t wrap the bottom all the way back to the top. Instead, I tie a knot around the hair at the root, twist around like so and then twist each individual one rag curl into a sort of “cinnamon bun” and tie the ends together. I only use four, so it takes about less than ten minutes once you get used to it, and run my fingers and separate the curls through to create a natural curl look Hope this helps!

When I was little, I had very long hair, and for special occasions, my mother would rag curl my hair. It's very effective and you can sleep on them more comfortably than regular curlers.

My mom was born in 1938 and her mother used to curl her hair with rag curls when she was 4-5 years old. She said they were very painful to sleep in, but they were the most beautiful ringlets I've ever seen in the pictures. My grandma was a perfectionist. I'm guessing she probably wrapped them up more so they were more on her head rather than hanging down vertically, so that probably made them even harder to sleep on.

I’d love to try it out on my own. My mom did my hair in rag curls for our susqecentenial , I wore my great aunt’s old party dress - it had a lot of fine lace and bead work. I looked just like her ( she passed away very young in the early 1900’s influenza epidemic. It was kind of eerie in a way when my great aunt Elenor told me how much I looked like Kathleen. ) the rag curls made it look historically accurate. It was an honor and a privilege to wear the dress and have my hair done that way .

My mum used to do this with my hair. If you put half of the rag hanging down over your head, wrap the hair around it then wrap the covering part of the rag from top to bottom and tie at the bottom. Then it´s not bumpy to sleep on x

Try cutting each strip in half length ways to make the knot at the top thinner. My grandmother used to do my hair in those and it was easier to sleep in. Love that you tried it though.

With this method, I suggest to oil your ends especially if they are damaged because your ends will look dry

Oh, good tip! I have very dry ends, and whenever I do rag curls I brush in a tiny bit of sweet almond oil at the ends.

This video reminded me of my childhood in the 1950’s. My Mum or older sister would put mine and my younger sisters hair in rags on a Saturday night or when there was a special occasion. I notice others have commented that wrapping the opposite way to how you demonstrated gives a more comfortable nights sleep. Of course that also depended on how many rags were put in and how tight they were wrapped. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Kindest regards.

Wow, I just uploaded a tutorial for rag curls like these on Wednesday; it's like we read each other's minds! I did mine in two layers: one on top of my head and the other low enough not to get between my head and the pillow. It was comfortable to sleep in, but my curls ended up really poofy and not as tidy as yours. I also did a tutorial where I started wrapping the hair from the ends, and I got looser curls that were mainly curly at the bottom. :-)

When i was 14-15 years old, i used to wear this look at school, which is ridiculous, now that i think of it :D i used to make these curls by twirling my hair around my fingers, strand by strand, and tthe spirals lasted for ever, because my hair is naturally wavy/curly. They looked exactly like they do there with the rag method.

Splendid! It's very similar to the method I use, when making curls for my miniature dolls wigs the only difference is that I won't need to wind my hair round a knitting needle as I do for the dolls.

Some people just enjoy being negative. It’s their only form of joy. They have a screw loose somewhere…and some are just jealous (I’d bet those 1,800 and however many since these 3 more years have passed are jealous of her), and they attack everything that makes them feel inferior, (which is everything and everyone, and the first and main trait of a bully-extreme insecurity and jealousy, that’s what bullies are made of, a great thing to know when one wants to deflate a bully… if they call somebody stupid, it’s because they feel stupid; if they call someone ugly, it’s because they feel ugly; if they call someone weak, it’s because they feel weak; and so on), rather than be happy for others. They also have a screw loose, and can’t just enjoy themselves, so they try to drag everyone into their own mire, where they wallow.

This is pretty much how I do my second day hair lol I have curly hair, so if I leave it down in its natural curl on washing day with some setting lotion in, when I get home I dampen it down, brush and put it in rag curls (I usually do 12, and with thicker rags). I also spiral wrap it. In the morning I look like I spent hours under the dryer or with a curling iron in my hands.

My grandmother did my hair like this in the 70’s as I liked my hair this way while I watched Dark Shadows thought I was too young to watch it! LoL I was 5. The show was set in 1752. I have a historical retreat and a Bridgerton Ball in September going to try this . Great regency hairstyle!

I wonder if there is a second type of curl that you can doif you sort of pull up the curl closer to your head. My mom says it is a loosed curl. But you did a really beautiful job!!! Love your creativity!

Tip: when you finished forming your rags, pin them to your head and tie a scarf over your head with the rags under the head scarf. This makes sleeping much easier.

My mother used to do this to my hair, we called it "rolling on rags". My great-grandmother swore it made your hair grow faster (I'm not too sure about this, lol), and you can then wear the curls or brush it out and have very wavy hair. My mom would sit me down and have me hold the end of the rag on top of my head with one hand while she spiraled the rag down and back up, then tied the ends as you did. I think she usually did about six rolls. We never put any products on the hair, just freshly washed and still pretty damp. Rolled it in the evening, and slept on it, then took out the rags the next morning. I have been wanting to do this again but wasn't sure I could do it by myself. After having seen your video, I will have to try it! We always used cotton rags (usually torn from an old pillowcase or sheet), and I think maybe the plain cotton lets your hair dry faster than the stretchy t-shirt material.

these curls seem similar to shirley temple curls. I am the hairstylist for a theatre production set in the 1800's and my director wanted these kinds of curls. Since we don't have the time to do no heat styles, I might do this with a 3/4" curling iron.

I am 68 and my grandmother would do this to me when I was a single digit child. I had very thick hair down to my knees. They were fun to do and virtually painless. Now I still have very thick hair but I have dreads past my butt now.

I have a question..if i needed to wash and set my hair and have curls within the hour how could i get these curls without using my irons which btw my straightening iron produces lovely lasting spiral curls unfortunately fries my hair..so please let me know an alternative if i blow dry my hair with babyliss 1900W on medium warm setting. ?? Thank you and if anyone else happens to read this and has a quickcurl method please give me your tips because after all we are smart creative women and it has been scientifically proven,(at this time it might be a good idea to hold your hands over your mans eyes if he is reading along...or his ears if you are reading out loud), that men are only limited to thinking usimg one side of their brain at a time. Whereas , we wonderfully brilliant women are always thinking with both sides of our brain at all times. We observe, process plan and practice, make plans B thru Z in case plan A thru Y dont work out, then we execute our plans. So, it is safe to say, someone reading this if not every woman reading this has an arsenal of valuable tried and true methods for washing drying and curling hair all within the same hour. Looks beautiful! Such a much better outcome than many vids I’ve seen with very inconsistent curls. And brushing it through is definitely a good finishing touch. And you can also curl to the roots, do upper and lower sections, and go high on the upper ones, straight up if possible, or as close to that as possible, and go low on the lower ones, (it will all blend in the end), and possibly avoid having them at face height for sleeping. I think it’s cute both ways, like it is here, and with a whole head of curls to the roots (which could be separated even further)…a bit more time consuming. I like that the ends are tucked in and curled. I really don’t care for when people leave their ends out. It looks weird to have curly hair with 1-3” of straight ends. I don’t get it at all when people do that. The curl should go from whatever starting point, then all the way to the ends. Nicely done, and good tips for a successful and consistent outcome! So lengthwise, it is just double the hair length, but how wide should the rags be cut?

I'd gues 1-2 inches. Narrow enough to knot easily but wide enough that you don't need to wrap it a hundred times per section. It's probably best to make just one strip, do a section, and learn from that how to cut the next.

Remember my Mum doing this to my hair when I was 10. I use to have very thick hair compared to my sisters that frizzed with curlers but rags didn’t fizz my hair. I use to walk in a bouncy way to make my ringlets bounce. When I wasn’t doing that my friends were taking turns patting them in the air.

I'm trying this myself today. I don't have a spray bottle though so I ran my hair under water, dried it as much as possible, and am going to leave it on my hair for about 12 hours. Then if it still feels wet I'll blowdry. Fingers crossed it works.
