Question about the pin curls: would they work if one normally wears a hat outside? I wear a wool beret in the winter, and an Aussie cowboy-ish hat in the summer ( or a couple of different straw sun hats).

My favourite so far has been the modern take on an oriental chinon. Doesn't even need any clips or pins. Much better for fine, dry or damaged hair as it reduces breakage. Collect hair into a high pony, curl/twist it until it curls around itself like a bun, turn it over to tuck it underneath itself from a side. Voila . But I might try this and see

My mother, born in the 1920's would do some pin curls in her hair. There is an easier way. Instead of starting your curl 8-10" from your head, you start the curl about 1-2" from your head. Curl around your two fingers, then back the curl onto your head and pin. That's for a curl that rolls toward the front of your head or the back of your head. If you want the curl to be more a side curl (ringlet), then, section your hair. (this works well on sides of the head and back). Put two fingers immediately below as close to the middle of the section as you can get, hold those two fingers to your scalp, then curl the hair around your fingers and pin. You can do this second method on top of your head as well. I think a lot of people have trouble with pin curls as a lot of directions now have them starting at the far end of their hair, rather than near the scalp. That's what you do with rollers, but not pin curls. Now rag rolls, you start more at the middle, twirl hair around rag until you have got the end secured, then backward to the scalp. Different methods, different manner of rolling. Hope that helps.

Some suggestions for those who, alas, are not blessed with the hair type or the skills to pin curl: Pillow rollers are a great option. They’re soft so you can actually sleep in them and they make great curls. Also, spritzing with Lotta Body setting lotion is extremely helpful as is some brushable hairspray when your hair is up. If your hair won’t hold a curl all week, you can pillow roll your hair dry to help hold the set or spritz lightly with plain water to reactivate the setting lotion. My hair is shorter and stick straight and this works well for me to approximate this updo.

Bernadette, I would like to introduce you to finger coiling or finger rolling for pin curls. Essentially you roll your hair around two fingers, one from each hand, and the hair goes up its leght on its own. There are plenty of tutorials here on the tube and I personally find it's quicker than getting the first loop of hair, removing the fingers from the loop and then grab and roll the thing up two centimetres at a time. It might take a bit of practice, like everything else hairdo related, but it could save you a bit of time and ease some of the arm fatigue. I hope you see this comment and, if you do, I would like to know how it went.

Wooden hair forks have been much more durable and reliable than plastic clips for me. Two tines are enough, but I find that three or four tines seem to hold a bit more securely. If you just want to put your hair up for a quick shower, double ended knitting needles bent in half make very nicely gigantic hair pins (that cost a lot less than purpose built, well marketed hair pins sold at retail prices. ) My own hair can never hold any floof or body, so I just gather all mine together for reasonably secure containment. A wooden hair fork holds more securely, for longer periods, but the metal sort are probably safer to use in the shower.

Love when you show your fun & sassy side. I always thought you had naturally curly hair! Pin curls are great as long as the curls don't get too tight. We used to curl them then hit them with a few mists of water. That helped a lot for the big hair curls we wore piled on top of our heads in the late 60s & early 70s. One very bad hair day, I never did my hair up again for the precise curls we wore. Messy hair is always better!

For my Grandma, going for a weekly 'shampoo and set' at the hairdresser was a routine for as long as I can remember, and probably even longer than that... Maybe 5 decades? Between settings, Grandma would painstakingly overnight pin any bits that were escaping; religiously wear a rain hood in damp weather; she had really long-tooth combs that went through the curls without unraveling them; the smell of hair lacquer is one of nostalgia for me (it became increasingly harder to come by this product, and hairspray just did not do what she wanted). She had these awful, pinchy, blue and pink, little rubber roller things with a strap on them to hold them closed for emergencies.

Bernadette, watching you do pin curls was a walk down memory lane. My sweet grandmother Irene was a young woman in the late nineteen teens/20s. She had naturally curly hair that she kept fairly short. She washed it weekly. As a child I was fascinated by watching her put her hair into pin curls all over her head. She did tight ones because she wanted it really curly. The top was done by pushing it up into two waves, which she clipped with long aluminum hair clips. In cool weather she would sit down in her living room and dry it with the vintage hair dryer. It looked like a small suitcase, and had a plastic hood, kind of like a shower cap, with a hose attached to it. It was like being in the beauty parlor but in her own comfy chair at home. She wore this same style, assisted by my mom, until her death at 99. Thanks for the memories! Also, you are beautiful!

Fun video. I haven't seen pin curls in decades. Pin curls were having their last hurrah by the time I had my first visit to a hairdresser. But the skill of winding a pincurl was still on the licensing test for beauticians. Of course, they had a specific way the pin curl had to be done on the test. The method of wrapping the pin curl involved using one finger. It was fascinating to watch the older ladies getting pin curled in the salon. The beauticians all used one finger method! They could pin curl a whole head of hair very quickly!

Pin curls on longer heavier hair - spray with more water, spray the curls with hairspray, set curls with a hair dryer or out in the sun. Holds way better than a curl from a curling iron actually :)

You're right about long hair not holding a curl...unless you have had the assistance of a chemical process (perm). But I found that if I put my hair into a tight French Braid, I could use the waves produced to make for a nice ''up do".

I love that your referenced "longer hair tutorials" includes the Dwarf ladybeard style *--that RoP did indeed very much deny us! like I KNEW they would, the lazy, cowardly non-canononical bums!--* for those of us who like to cosplay more authentically, or just style ourselves some nice ladybeard hairstyles in general.

I've been waiting for this tutorial for a while! You certainly never disappoint!!! I actually did my hair the other day in the same way and when I looked in the mirror 😮 it was such a nice surprised that it looked identical as yours. I was dumbfounded like "certainly this is not it could this be how Bernadette does it?" Look at that, that's exactly how!!!! Thank you always!

Big thank you! this video solved a mystery for me lol! I have had to self teach myself to do pin curls for my wigs and hairpieces. and what tutorials in the past i could find didnt help at all they just did a sped up process, with very little to no explanation, especially if the hair had to be twisted or flat. so I had to guess that part. this video proved I was on the right track. I even made my own Pin curl tool I took this old thick paint brush handle and wrap it around the front curls and use it to wrap. I carefully secure the curl with one finger, pull it out and add the pins.

Pincurls patterns were design to give a beautiful s wave that's flows from end to the other and transitions down to the next row. A transition curl helps blend the waves in. So yes yes when it comes to that perfect s wave it matters. And no parts between curls so teasing isn't need much to blend the sections in. But if it's for the sake to had texture(grip) and volume then it doesn't matter if youre gonna throw it up in a updo.
