I'm getting a lot of questions about how often I spot clean or how often others should spot clean! 🧼 I don't actually have a schedule for this, for Dipper and Waddles usually I'll do it once a week or sometimes more depending on how messy they were the night before and Mabel like mentioned I usually just know once she smells stinky and I clean the above surface as needed. As for how often others should spot clean that's not something I can determine, all of your hamsters will have different habits- some hamsters will be messier than others, some enclosures are larger than others and all these things play a factor in how often you're going to have to do it. If you feel the enclosure is messy you likely need to do a little spot clean. 😌

This video is amazingly apropo - having viewpoints of each of the hamsters, each with different behaviors for nesting. Our new adopted hamster, Alfredo, is EXACTLY like Mabel. Two previous hamsters slept and urinated in a multi-chamber. It seemed so easy to clean up after them and “keep an eye” on them re: health. Alfredo does not do this! He eats, sleeps, urinates in tunnels visible through the glass of his detolf. I wasn’t sure how to handle all the activity underground when it comes time to spot clean….now I have the proper tips!

I am so thankful for your videos! A few years back I had a hamster in a way too small cage (plus tiny wheel). I was able to move her into a custom bin cage after I learned that was too small, but she died shortly after due to old age. It was really heart breaking because I never got to fully get everything a happy hamster needs. I’ve taken a break for a few years to get to a place where I have to time to take care of a hamster, but now I think I’m ready. I’m slowly putting together a tank for one now and I’ve watched so many of your videos and learned so much! I can’t wait to do it right this time.

My hamster is like Mabel he likes to pee in his sleeping burrow. Hearing that Mabel does this and how you spot clean makes me feel so much better. Because of you, yesterday morning I recognized the signs of a respiratory infection. The vet couldn't see him until 2:30 and by that point it was in a life threatening situation. He needed: oxygen, nebulizer and injections of antibiotics. I just got a call back from our vet and our sweet boy is making a full recovery and can come home tonight. I think I’ve heard you mention niteangel before but I’m in the UK and I don’t think they ship out here 😭 love the multichamber hides but Peach my Syrian is quite a big girl and I don’t want to get something she could get stuck in. She currently has a cage similar to yours built out of IKEA bits. I’ve been using an IKEA kids shelf as a platform for her but would love to use the boxes and platforms that are more like the ones you have

My hamster also sleeps on the surface underneath a platform, my little one also has hydrocephalus though so I’m not sure he entirely knows how to hamster. He’s never bit me, doesn’t burrow, and doesn’t pouch his food- I watch him carry it piece by piece under one of his platforms. He does still have his teeth and they’re healthy normal looking teeth so I give stuff to chew but he doesn’t really do it. It also actually gives me much more comfort that he doesn’t burrow because he has really bad breathing issues so I’m planning on slowly taking out bedding and just giving him fleece with a bunch of different substrates to explore and nest with
