Thank you so much for sharing you knowledge Victoria, recently I upgraded my Dwarf enclosure from a 40B gallon to a Niteangel Vista. Even though the 40B gallon still a good size he was showing sings of stress. He is such an active hamster and stays awake a lot during the day. Now he is very happy in his cage. But since I start watching your videos I learn so much. Thank you

I recently moved my hamster from an alright sized bin cage to a Ferplast Maxi Duna Large cage. For future UK/European hamster owners, I highly recommend it. It can fit a large wheel, many toys, and is super secure. It doesn't take much to assemble either, but remember to check if it's listed as the 'large' variant. They make smaller ones too. Edit: These cages have two holes on each side for a water bottle, you may need to cover them up, a determined hamster can use them to chew out.

I'm always making or thinking of DIY ideas for my female Russian Dwarf Hamsters Detolf. There's so much you can do with a Detolf as a hamster enclosure. I have a couple of things on stilts and a Trixie platform which she likes to go on, as well as plenty of hides and burrow spots where she loves to dig down to aha. Thanks for the tips and advice! 😊

Crazy to think back in the mid 1970's as a child I had a Hamster living in a tiny wire cage, which seemed the norm back then, also he would wake me in the night gnawing the wire bars, I was told "oh that's normal his he just grinding his teeth down" not knowing he was stressed and not happy and to find out what an awful life he must have had upsets me now, So glad you put out such good info for the welfare of these ickle guys.

I've always wanted a hamster but been very aware that I don't know enough about them and so wanted to do as much research as possible first. It's actually how I found your channel, so thank you so much! I grew up at a time when you didn't have access to the Internet 24/7 and yet still tried to learn everything possible about different dog breeds, about rabbits and guinea pigs, so I greatly appreciate that you make these videos as it gives me confidence to adopt a rescued hamster one day! I also think these small odd wire cages prevent you from even seeing the hamster all that much? There's nothing that makes much sense with them? I'm much more fascinated at seeing the tunnels they make in their bedding and catching a glimpse of them when they are confident enough (or just awake enough) to wander around? 🥰 Also larger enclosures are SO MUCH EASIER to keep clean, even though it sounds weird to say 😂, but if you're struggling to convince a parent to help you upgrade your enclosure, this might be a good thing to suggest to them too (and maybe show them this video if possible)? As you weirdly can spend less on bedding as you're spot cleaning for the most part and even the most determined hamster can only make so much mess! 😂🥰

Thank you for videos like this, I really hope more people who have hamster will find out about this issue and giving their hamster the best that they can do, and also the best that a hamster should get. I'm glad you did this video. Avoiding buying a hamster from a pet store is one way to hold them accountable, but pet stores don't make much money off the hamsters themselves. They make much more off the accessories. When it comes to holding pet stores accountable, I feel like there really needs to be a push towards boycotting inappropriate hamster products. It's good to see you being the tip of the spear on that and I hope other hamster KZbinrs and bloggers follow suit. I also have a bit of an odd question. You mentioned before that shampoo isn't good for hamster or people hair. How do you keep your hair looking so shiny and healthy?

When I was 8 I used to keep my hamster inside a fish tank, it's too small and have little to no bedding. I never thought this was an issue because I always keep them out of the cage and play with me or chill in the couch or floor. He lived like two years and my heart broke because I thought he got sick but it was just old age. I stopped taking care of them because I might get too attached, for the past years I got 4 cats, 3 dogs, four love birds+ their child and 6 bunnies. Quite alot, right now I have two dogs and two love birds. Most of the pets are farm animals that I always visit in the weekends. Right now I want to try and get a hamster in a correct more appropriate way for them to live. I'm now 14:)

I got my hamster like a year and a half ago and I started watching your videos and I learned a lot like cage sizes The cage that I was using was a wire cage and then I watched one of your videos and I upgraded it to an old fish tank that is 3‘ x 1‘ which still isn’t the best but it’s better than what it was. I also made my room hamster proof and every night I will change the sign on my door that says my hamsters out and I will let her out and let her roam for a little bit until I start to get ready for bed and then once I’m ready for bed I’ll put her away. for bedding I use paper shredding and I know it’s not the best for them and I probably shouldn’t be using it but I still really want to invest in actual bedding. every time I go to the pet store I always go to where the hamster stuff is because I always want to see if they have toys for my hamster and her cage. i’m only 12 but I try my best to let my hamster have a happy life and I love her so much

Ok so everybody I just want you to know if found an amazing diy cage. Ok so if you go to target and get the 110 qt. storage bin (which will be 612 sq inches) and simply cut a hole in the top and add chicken wire, BOOM big hamster cage that will fit 6+ inches of bedding and is over the bare minimum. For the exact measurements (LxWxH): 34 5/8, 18 3/4, 12 5/8. The only thing I’d recommend is your wheel may not fit with the height, so if you have a barrier where you can have a little less bedding in the cage on one side (you could put a sand bath there two if you want), then you will be able to fit the wheel and any other accessories you want and it’s COMPLETELY CUSTOMIZABLE!! This is by far a better deal than buying a 70 dollar cheaply made, plastic cage that is two small from a pet store. Love y’all ❤️❤️❤️

Great advice, as usual. Spare cardboard boxes are great, and I'm sure your hammies will gnaw on them! For my rats, I give them packaging from diet cookies which they love to adopt as a tiny bedroom, before they gnaw (usually into a card mat, they love making card mats for their nest); and soft cheese boxes (they're nice and round), which i cut different shaped holes into and fill with veg, so they have to think about how to get into these toys to get at the food inside. You just gotta know which cardboard you can give to rodents: as long as it isn't shiny, plastic covered cardboard... don't give 'em that!

Hi Victoria. Could you maybe do a video of on the differences between 2 hamsters fighting and 2 hamsters play fighting. I saw 2 fighting today at a pet shop and asked the workers. They said that the hamsters were play fighting but I wasn’t too sure. Keep up the great content.
@mitsukitai27132 жыл бұрын
Thank you for saying something. As general rule, hamsters really shouldn't be housed together. They're not social rodents like mice or rats so they don't "play fight"--what you see with hamsters housed together who are older than 8 weeks is that theyre actually annoying and stressing each other out. (They can get stressed just by smelling another hamster in the same room.) The reason pet stores house them together because they usually get their hamsters very young (like about 2 months) and the enclosure is meant to be temporary (some stores are good about seperating ones who fight).

I had a hamster back in the early 90's and only got another 20 years later. In the 90's I had no Internet and the books available were useless. So what I got was a habit rail But it was much bigger than the ones that are out there's now (still no where near big enough obviously) so I don't understand why habitrail started to make them smaller and smaller. The one I had was a tank shape with a big wheel (well bigger than avaergae at the time) I had add ons too and he had floor time. Considering having no info i think he was better off than most back then. It was still wayyy too small when I think back now. Habitrail should have went the other way by making their tank much bigger and better accessories but they went smaller and I wouldn't use anything from habitrail now.

Hi Victoria!! I am on the hunt for the best bedding for keeping up burrows. I’m sure you’ve mentioned this, and I think you said Kaytee clean and cozy before, but I find that kind of dusty. Just wondering what you think is the best!!

Yay! I just convinced my dad and I’m on the verge of convincing my mom for a hamster. I’m going to show more responsibility so my chances of her saying yes bump up. The only problem is I’d have to put the hamster in my 10 gallon tank in the garage. I don’t want to use that tank because it is not big enough so I’m gonna have to convince my parents for a super critter trail, Detolf or 40+ gallon tank! Thank you for your videos, they help me get closer and closer to convincing my mom! Keep up the hamsome work!

this is such an informative video! I definitely did some of these when I started to own hamsters, but I think my last hamster had a pretty good life! I'm not allowed to get any more pets, but when I move out, I'll want to get a hamster!

Hey Victoria! I know this may be a sensitive topic, but can you please make a video on what to do when your hamster dies and if you want another one? Thanks!

i make DIY hiding and platforms with cardboard. Luckily little Mochi doesn't chew on them. I always make new ones once they get dirty and he enjoys exploring new things :)

I am currently starting to wonder if Syrian Hamsters actually need a minimum of 1000 Square Inches of Enclosure space to truly be happy. I started owning Hamsters again last year, a sweet Rescue Hybrid Dwarf called Snowball who lives in an Ikea Detolf (1,083 Square Inches) and a fluffy show-bred Syrian called Cinnamon who lives in an Aquarium Tank (868 Square Inches). I'm unsure if it's the Aquarium or Cinnamon, but Cinnamon doesn't seem happy.. He licks the same corner of the glass, and has recently started bar climbing. I know he is quite an Anxious Hamster, but this has really left me feeling terrible, as I've provided him with supposedly everything for him to be happy - A large Enclosure, all kinds of different Enrichment, Hides, Burrow Starters, Dangling Toys, Chew Toys, Sand Bath, Dig Box.. Yet, he seems unhappy. Would he be happy in a 1,000 Square Inch Enclosure, or is he just one of those Hamsters that doesn't adjust too well to domestication, I wonder..? (EDIT: Which is weird, because he's a Show Bred Hamster from a reputable Breeder!) I have no idea, but it makes me really sad to see.. Now I'm stressing over making him happy so badly it's putting me off of owning another Syrian in the future. Any advice would be appreciated, I feel like I've tried everything other than DIYing myself a 1,000 Square Inch+ Enclosure, lol.

How many bags of bedding do you use for your enclosures? The amount of bedding you provide is amazing, but it makes me wonder how much you spend on bedding annually.
@VictoriaRaechel2 жыл бұрын
Around $150cad per hamster enclosure but it's not yearly as I'm not doing full cage clean outs.
