First video of yours I've watched and it's really helpful! Hopefully it'll help my cockatiel (whom I got four days ago) get a little more used to me... He wasn't treated too gently by the people we got him from, but I've been taking things at his pace to get him used to our hands (Day 1) I periodically placed my hands (slowly!!) against the sides of his cage so he could see them, left them there for a few minutes, then slowly took them away so he didn't associate them with a threat or danger. (Day 2) I then placed some seeds that I knew he enjoys on my hand, before gently lowering it into his cage and leaving it on the bottom of his cage for a few minutes (being careful not to move, even if he hissed at me). After a few rounds of that, I held a bit of millet between my thumb and forefinger and waited, until he *came up to me himself.* He then took the millet, and I repeated that a few times, praising him. (Day 3 (Yesterday)) I slowly reached into his cage with my hand in a finger gun shape, with a bit of millet between my thumb and hand. I started with my index finger under the perch, and let him eat some millet. As he ate, I *very slowly* moved my hand away from the perch, making him reach for the millet. When he couldn't reach it by himself anymore, he stepped onto my finger. I then praised him and let him realise what he was doing and move back to where he was comfortable, then did it again. It's still a work in progress, and he still hisses sometimes, but not nearly as often as he did when I first got him!
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so very much! Sounds like you are doing great with him and I bet you were super pumped when he came up to you all by himself. You're doing great and I bet hes going to get to a point he doesn't hardly hiss at all. So cool when we see progress and trust building with our birbs :)))

I love Quakers and yours is gorgeous. I agree with all that you said. The more you can know about their history the better. The sex frustration is a real thing though. Yeah they are smart... about 3 year old human smart.... but like a 3 year old they really don't have enough cerebrum to understand that you aren't a mate. Their little limbic systems kind of take over where breeding & emotions are a thing. So yeah... especially during breeding season they most certainly can see you as a mate and be possessive, aggressive towards rivals, etc. The wrong kind of touching can make it so much worse. Before we understood this our cockatiel became so obsessed with my husband that she laid eggs! Non-fertile of course 😂... but still she did this several times poor thing.

From I've learned from having birds is that some (most) birds have (even parent raised birds) have a gender preference. One of my male budgies, despite being completely parent raised and tamed by me, a man, still prefers my mom where my breeder tamed budgie (her breeder was a woman) she prefers me. Also people need to understand that birds are highly intellectual creatures and are more than capable of feeling and thinking their own thing. Also from what I've learned about Quakers is: they tend to be one person birds, even if they are well socialized. Also it's normal for quakers to be territorial over their cages. Green cheeks are usually good family birds. (Don't take me as being condescending sksksjsjs please I'm just someone who's studying to be an avian vet and happens to have a love of birds just like you so please don't take me as an ass)

also let me just say that it's incredible how tame your Quaker is. They are one of the most hard headed species that I've ever had the pleasure to work with

I don't think you're being mean at all. I like when people state their opinion or findings about birds on here it helps people and helps me as well. I don't like the turds that insult me or someone else just to be hurtful. There's no excuse for it. Which you didn't do at all so thank you. Interesting about gender preference I'll have to look into that. Super cool you are studying to be an avian vet we need more of them! Thank you very much for stating all of this I hope it's able to help someone. I appreciate ya.

Terry Maskell Hi. Thank you for your videos. They were helpful in understanding Conure behavior. I have a 6 year old conure (jackie) and a 5 year old female (Cookie). Jackie, who I believe is Male, is the cuddlyest of the two of them, ..always nuzzleing up to my lips and allows me to stoke him from head to wings with my lips BUT....sometimes (a lot lately) he will get on to my shoulder in the morning when I am about to clean his cage & refresh his food and bite my ear very hard....even drawing blood. He has also bit my hand for no reason and has drawn blood from my hand as well. This seems to happen all to oftern now. I am wondering if the following has something to do with this: My wife passed away in September and I am wondering if this is happening because he is wondering where she went. They were the best of friends. She was awesome to him. He seems to be angry all of a sudden. She raised him from a baby. He has always been sweet and cuddly and had never bit me o(or her) once in the previous 5 years. She taught him to cuddle and to talk (he can say about 5 or six things). She could do anything with him and he didn't mind. She'd turn him upside down, kiss his belly, pet his back etc. He will not allow me to put a hand on his back or allow me to gently pet his head. He WILL NOT allow me to lay hand on hm. He will come to me when called, get on my finger and we will cuddle for an hour as he chortles and talks contently. He can be sooo sweet. Next day he attacks me for no reason at all. Those bites really hurt. I tried grabbing his beak like you suggested (and saying "no bite") but as soon as I grab it he bites me again. Strangely enough, my other bird (Cookie) used to bite periodically for the first couple years but since my wife has passed away he no longer bites me. Back when he did bite me I would shake my finger at him and say "NO BITE, NO TREAT". Now....when Jackie bites me and I say "NO BITE" the other bird pipe us from his cage and says "NO TREAT". I don't know what to do. This bird is the sweetest thing...until he's not. I tried some of your other suggestions (by saying "NO" and turning my atteniton away). nothing seems to be working. Got any ideas?? Thank again for your fun and informative videos. Terry (Hamilton, Ontario)

He would move out of his way to try to bite my family members. I rescued a crimson belly conure and they are now super bonded especially the crimson to my gcc, I spend less time now with him alone because he always wants to be with the crimson so I have two parrots always together if I want to spend time. The only really time I spend with my gcc alone is his flight training. With the crimson I’m not bonded to her but she did tolerate me when I handle her Oh also both hates my toes and iv got no idea why

I have a parrotlet for about 5 months now. His name is Yoshi and he is about 8months old now. Lately he's been getting aggressive me lately. Especially when food is involved. I don't know what to do. Is it maybe that he is hormonal?
@abcgerbils5 жыл бұрын
Parrotlets are very sweet babies. Then they go through a hormonal stage. I think the first big molt and pin feathers are very uncomfortable too. Plus they are just more territorial and less docile as adults. They are not as domestic as some of the other small parrots, which you don't expect, because they are so damn cute. Respect their cage as their territory and talk to them a lot as to what you are doing. Plus give a lot of praise and compliments. Good luck. I have some parrotlet videos on talkzcheep if you are interested. Ditty is my second parrotlet, so still new to the species, but have learned a lot from having them.
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Another Yoshi!!! 😊 I agree it could be a multitude of different reasons since he's so young and going through some things such as possibly molting. Have you heard of/ considered parrot stationing? Basically training your bird to go to a specific perch before you give him food? And not giving in to giving him the food when he's aggressive?

@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I misunderstood but are they biting you or each other? Where are they biting each other if this is the case like one another's beak and feet? Do they squack really loud during and have either made the other bleed? For example if they are at each other's beak but aren't flapping their wings like crazy and squacking they could simply be playing and wrestling each other. I wouldn't worry about that 😉 but if blood is involved, their eyes are pinned on the other, and/or very loud during this then that's serious.
