Don't get me wrong, rome was quite a sophisticated and urbanized state, but sometimes we forget that these places are bustling metropolises now, but they weren't always like that. In fact, most roman territory was just countryside answering to the economic power in italy, tunisia and maybe egypt. This was supported by the fact that the western half of rome collapsed, among many reasons, due to a lack of the agricultural resources the nile was abundant in.
