I've had the original Wenger version of this knife for about 18 years now and I greatly prefer it's serrated scissors over Victorinox's scissors. Those serrations help immensely when cutting into stuff like plastic packaging. The movement in the scissors was never noticeable in use to me and is absolutely worth not having that little spring to break.
@BootsWalken
@BootsWalken 2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is 3 years late, but what I dig about the original Wenger can opener is that it had a pointed edge that can function as a package opener (you can even sharpen the edge). Also, another drawback of the serrated scissors for me is that it prevents fast push cuts through paper. Still, I love these Wengers and EVOs, with the Wenger Traveler/EVO 14 being among my favorite SAK's. They would be perfect if they had the Vic scissors, but then again alot of Vics would be perfect for me if they'd just provide any with scissors and a nail file in the same package.

I’ve had a wenger knife for a few decades now and the can opener is very similar to the leatherman waves can opener just shorter and missing the wire stripper. The big down fall to the scissors for me is trimming nails with the serrated edge leaves your nails very rough. But the nail file is great at smoothing out. Have to say the nail file/ cleaner is likely the second most used tool.

Great review. I have the original Wenger version, and other differences are the tweezers which are plain metal without the grey plastic end, the toothpick is thinner and the awl is just a spike without the sharpened edge of the Victorinox variation. I agree with you about the scissors; the serrations are meant to be self sharpening but just make the cut more blunt.

Thanks man! Just what I needed. Been on the fence on an S18 vs Fieldmaster. I think I'm going with Fieldmaster. I've carried an Explorer for years, mostly because of the inline phillips. I wish Victorianox would offer that in more of the slimmer models. I'd be all over it. I thought I found it in that Gerber Armbar you reviewed, but alas....you saved me 40 bucks there! If they come up with a decent 2.0 version, I might have to switch! Keep up the good work, friend.

Nice review. I was almost sold on getting an S18 until I started looking into some of the shortcomings. I actually prefer the fieldmaster since it has nearly all the same tools just the older style scissors and longer blade. I guess the non-locking blade versions are a bit better as well since the blade lock kinda sucks.

Americans consume vast quantities of corked wine, importing from France, Australia, Israel, Chile, Italy etc. I do not drink (I am in Israel), but have always used the corkscrew to undo knots, clean boot treads, and hold the small eyeglass screwdriver. I have the s18, and several others of that line. Also in wood, and without the lock. No safety problems--this is a light duty model. There are Victorinox 88mm standards with that nail file. I agree that Wenger scissors are not as good at cutting, despite appearing to be a more advance design. But fine for most purposes. Lots of torsion bar springs break. The Vic spring is easily replaceable. That pressure lock on the Wenger driver is good. But again, being a light duty tool, I just don't worry about the Vic driver closing up. Thanks--good review!

So glad to stumble back to this video and finally see someone call out it's only issue - the scissor movement. Still give it an A, though. I carry an SAK, literally; every minute of the day until I get into bed. Love my Explorer, my Hercules, etc., but, if I had to pick only one, I think this would be it. Just has the right tools for the most needs, and the value of a locking blade can't be understated.

Nice review. I just ordered the 18 yesterday and looking forward to receiving it. One complaint I hear somewhat commonly about the Vic style siccors is regarding the spring breaking or having to be replaced. It looks like the Wenger style will be beefier. It's surprising the Vic style cuts the para cord better. I would have guessed the opposite. Interesting.

Great review! To your point on the Evo scissors, I have heard that they are better for cutting tougher things like electrical wire than the the standard scissors as well as being self sharpening because of the micro serrations. 👍 I have a Wenger and a Victorinox, personally I don't cut paracord that often so I find that both perform the same tasks well for me. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I had the original wenger version of the 14, and also own the victorinox version of the 14. I like that I'll probably never have to replace the spring in the scissors, but I agree, I wish it cut as well as the victorinox. I assume the serrations are the issue. Otherwise, I like the smaller length, the contoured handles, and pockets really well. It's just missing a couple of things I'd like to have on me.

Wenger-Delémont scissors are decent; the sole problem for me is how thin they are. Cutting harder materials or cutting repeatedly will dig into the finger badly. This is quite worse with the small Wenger scissors on the old Esquire (65 mm), for instance.

Couple comments. 1) Victorinox doesn't "ALWAYS" have the scales/cover tools. None of the ALOX models have them. 2) The Evo/Evo Grip knives are 85mm, not 84. The large Tinker is 91mm. 3a) The Victorinox scissor spring has an unfortunate history of breaking on the 91/"93" mm and 58mm knives. 3b) The Wenger scissors can't break the spring. 3c) The Wenger scissors might cut paracord better without the micro serration. However, you have a couple other options for cutting Paracord: (a) the knife blade. (b) You carry a Leatherman with scissors. You could use those scissors, or the plain edge or serrated edge blade on the Leatherman. Also, for cutting standard 550 and/or 750 paracord, the 85mm/91/93mm SAK scissors are a bit on the small side. I have an Evo Grip 14 (no saw hand has the corkscrew which holds the SAK corkscrew screwdriver, or firefly kindling and tiny ferro rod. In addition to (possibly?) opening a corked adult beverage, the corkscrew works great for picking open an over tightened knot in/on a rope or shoelace.) which I've paired with a 58mm SAK Mini Champ, and a Leatherman Charge+ TTI multi tool, and usually a stockman or Loom Fixer, or other knife with a Sheepfoot or Wharncliffe blade, because I need a blade with a straight, zero belly blade for some knife tasks quite often. A spear point or clip point blade woul work, but the zero belly blade makes the kob a lot easier. 😷👍 Since my LM has a saw, I don't need to get the S17 or S18, or replace my AWOL SAK Huntsman. Other than mentioned above, a good review. 👍 I like the yellow and black covers on yours. They might make it easier to locate if dropped (unless dropped in a field of Daisies, Buttercups, or Dandillion, of course.)

I think it's the fieldmaster you are comparing it with not the super tinker because the super tinker has 3 layers and the one you're using for comparison is a 4 layer. At the end you said the evo 18 was more pocket friendly than the super tinker, which prompted me to buy the evo 18. But when it arrived i couldn't understand why that was the case because the super tinker is lighter and less bulky. But i now realise it was because you were comparing it with the fieldmaster, not super tinker, which is more bulky and heavier

i dislike torsion bars just because it takes more force to use. when I need to use it for light-duty tasks, a regular spring makes it a lot easier to do so, while also lasting for at least as long as torsion bars. when I need to use it for longer time periods, the torsion bar style scissors need some break periods, as it digs into the skin a lot more than just the regular spring one.

The Wenger can opener was a "Lobster" claw style. It cut going forward. The VIC cuts backwards.

The micro grooves on scissors manes them self sharpening scissors dint have to sharp them ever the can opener in wenger resemble a leatherman so there’s no small screw driver in the tip

Great video! Detailed and informative - thanks very much! Here's a good explanation/tip on how to use the wire stripper tool on the knife. Refer to the following link at about 1.22m: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqDEpXScgraKhbM Also, by way of another tip, I figure you could file down the small blade on the Super Tinker to a dull edge and point to create a nail cleaner... That's if the small cutting blade isn't used that much.

"Being from America?" What? You mean we prefer our wine with a screw cap? :)

Bought one of these used, gifted it to my sister. Wenger was a downgrade from Victorinox for me. Reminded me of those cheap "wood handle with your name and state park you are at" tourist knives you get as souvenirs. I did like the regressing flathead, which locked into place when you pushed the tip down.
