I agree the awl is a great tool. I think that I use it as much as the knife perhaps more. I have a Farmer X. I use scissors for cutting elastoplast and repairing things, where fine control of cutting fabric is required. In a pinch you could use the knife I suppose. I can see why the scissors would be the tool to ditch if you wanted to lose a layer on the knife along with some weight. NB: I have used the saw for cutting PVC pipe it works remarkably well. Also like to add that the Alox tools are thicker and more robust and the scales are superior than the SAK Celador equivalent.

You didn't cover the best part of the 93 mm FarmerX as is the Pioneer....it is beefier, thicker, stronger tighter more aggressive springs. This is a beast. Quality is sooooo easily apparent.

Great field review. I have a Farmer X in the mail, same idea - only the tools I actually want. No corkscrew, hook, etc. And the inline awl! I use the scissors in town or the mountains for nail trimming, moustache trimming, first aid, etc.

I've been carrying one of these, every day for over 15 years, only recently I started to consider maybe replacing it with a Hiker. Slightly thicker, but hung on a dropper loop its still comfortable in the pocket. Given the steel is somewhat soft a second blade would be handy sometimes, as well as the Philips screw driver. I'd lose some utility on the awl, but mostly I use that for digging out splinters/ and burrs, which the spine mounted awl will also do.

You can use a couple of small, precision files, or bench grinder, and turn the screwdriver into a gouge, for wood carving. It's, by far, not the best gouge you'll ever use, but it can perform small and precise tasks, like soon carving, fairly well. I definitely get more use out of it now, than when it was a screwdriver. Not a whole lotta screws in bushcraft/survival. You may GET SCREWED in nature, but you don't typically ENCOUNTER screws. It's easy to find tutorials showing various method of accomplishing the mod.

If you're packing a stove, fishing reel, or rifle, the screw drivers can end up pretty handy. I tend to do most of my fishing with vintage spinning reels, specifically because I can, and have had to, field strip them and do any repairs with just a Swiss Army Knife.

Also, I have been looking at SAK for a bit now, as the one I had been given years ago..well..just didn't have the tools I wanted. I didn't know about this version. Once again, you have given me more options. Thanks!

I'm a Pioneer guy through and through, but I could see myself getting a Farmer for camping. That awl is great, I use it for stuff I don't want to dirty the knife blade with like opening tape sealed packages. Is that Eagle .50 or .44? Why'd you choose whichever one it is over the other? I like the Farmer also. I have the original version. But I decided to get the Farmer X also. The reason I like the scissors on the X or why I like to have scissors is only to have them to use in first-aid when cutting tape or gauze. I also like the Farmer X because of the scissors, the knife is wider and to me it feels better in the hand.👍

I dont typically go for scissors, but I've found them pretty damn handy for trimming chipped finger nails ETC. For me it all comes down to what knife means I will carry the least extra stuff. Usually the farmer, some nail clippers, a small sharpening stone, and compact needle nose pliers... I could bring a Leatherman, but they are excedingly uncomfortable to do any major whittling with, so then you darn near need to bring a whole other knife.

The thing about SAK's is there is one for everyone. We all do different things so have different needs as far as tools go. To me, the perfect one would have a blade, saw, and awl. Everything else just adds bulk. I never use the can or bottle opener, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who do, and the same with all the other tool options. That's the good thing about them. No matter your needs or preference, you can find one that will fit for you. Exept, there aren't any with only those 3 things I use, and nothing else. 😆 I do still love my SAK's though. I have 8 or 9 of them, so obviously, the lack of the perfect one in my eyes hasn't kept me from buying them. The Fieldmaster finds it's way into my pocket the most when I'm headed out to the field. That or the Outrider.

Not easy to find, but it exists. They were made for Swiss Bianco in various colors, the model name was Bushcrafter. But it's probably easier to buy a Farmer, drill out the rivets, remove the opener layer and put it back together (re-rivet, or buy screws) - or have this done by a professional SAK modder, there are plenty of them out there.

Victorinox Swiss Army 7 AKA Harvester is my favorite Alox! It's almost the same as the Farmer, with an extra hawkbill blade instead of can opener and without the anoying keyring, which ruins the ergos of the Farmer. Harvester for the win!!!

@@southerncomfort7490 Still the Harvester, is more comfortable and more useful in the outdoors. The small flat screwdriver,/ can opener, is useless in the field. The Farmer is better for farmers, that are as the tolls says, in their Farms! I hope you understand what I mean. When you're hiking, or on any other outdoor activity , far from civilization, Harvester is a slightly better choice.
@southerncomfort7490

@@greekveteran2715 Hi. Nothing against the Harvester my friend. It looks like a great piece of kit. I certainly take your well-made points on board. Perhaps i am biased because I am a farmer! My only other observation comes from carrying, for some years, a two-bladed barlow. I am not just a farmer. I do set off into the outdoors. When in the outdoors I found that one blade was enough. Keep it sharp and it will do any job want. So why have two? Still, you make some very good points.
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 Жыл бұрын
@@southerncomfort7490 You can say the same, for the 2 flat screwdrivers/.prybars, why to have 2 of them in the outdoors, where you'll probably never need them, since these are tools that we use in an urban environment. Farmer has seen way more advertisement, on KZbin and that's what makes us believe, something is worth having or it's better than others etc. As for the 2 blades, the steel on SAKS is very soft and the edges dull in no time. Having a smaller blade like that, is not just a back up, but a way more useful tool in the field, than the small flat, will ever be! I own both for years. both are great, but both have more differences, than what a picture might say. Harvester also feels so much better in hand! Enjoy whatever you have, all SAKS are GREAT!!

Alox SAK are nice-tougher, prettier, heavier blades, too. But a firefly in the scales is hard to pass up. For about 2 more ounces you can carry a handyman with tweezers and a ferro rod.

The old style German Army knife is pretty close to the Farmer for me (you can still get good Spanish made versions of this knife), the scales are more grippy and the awl is twice as long as the conventional SAKs making it more useful and the blade is longer and chunkier than a regular medium SAK......but the Victorinox version is getting harder to get so it's gone into semi retirement. I discovered the Farmer before I knew about the Spanish versions of the GAD and the Farmer is great. As regards scissors in the wilderness, those scissors aren't necessarily for you, a pair of folding scissors in your med kit is easy to find if someone else is using your med kit. Which pocket/pouch are your SAK scissors in? They don't know. Times a wastin. The screwdriver/bottle opener is great for getting hot Billy can handles off of fires.
