So a very minimalist, urban office EDC knife doesn't work well as an EDC for an outdoorsman? Who woulda thunk it? Hah. But seriously, the fingernail file is for your fingernails, not screws. I love your videos, btw. This just comes off like an office worker like me complaining that the Leatherman Surge is too big and bulky for trimming my nails at the office.

Agreed not a fair comparison between a $45 1.6 oz SAK and a $75 5 oz multitool I think the leatherman squirt (now discontinued) will always be my choice for a key chain multitool. The Gerber Dime and Gerber Vise or one of the Nextools of similar 2-3 oz keychain multi variet at $20-30 are a much more fair comparison to the Cadet I do agree agree with Aaron as well as much as I love collecting Victorinox Pocket Knives I tend to carry multitools due to better functionality and also I prefer locking blades.

Was thinking the same thing. I have not found a more usable pocketknife/multi-tool for my daily needs in urban/suburban settings than the Cadet/Recruit. I have carried mine for 20+ years and use it constantly to pry, scrape, unscrew and cut countless things. I feel naked when doing home projects without it. Slips into the fifth pocket on jeans quite easily, unlike larger models like the Pioneer and Farmer, which I also have. I only wish it had something like 14C28n so that I can keep zipping through cardboard (way better than most other "modern" knives thanks to its much thinner blade stock) without having to resharpen repeatedly. I've stopped obsessing over and trying to find the best all-around "modern" folder (selling my expensive and disappointing Neutron 2 and Hogue Mini RSK, both collecting dust in my drawer) and am sticking with the Cadet for everyday use and a small fixed blade for hiking/outdoors/hard use.

I'm not sure what the point is in comparing the Cadet to non equivalent alternatives. The Leatherman Squirt PS4 I carry as my EDC is also more versatile, but it's not equivalent either. Victorinox has a ton of tool combinations, all you need to do if you are so inclined is get the ones that are right for your likely usage profile.

This is my thought as well. None of these ”alternatives” match the super compact form factor of the cadet. I’ve been carrying the cadet for almost 7 years now and will continue to do so. It definitely comes down to what you typically find yourself using every day.

A few years ago I was at Target walking by the camping section. They had a cadet on the rack with a clearance sticker for $11. I grabbed it assuming someone made a mistake and Target honored it. Haven’t looked back. It’s a good looking SAK that’s also not intimidating and therefore can easily be used just about anywhere without raising pulses. Also that thin profile is hard to beat in your pocket when you’re wearing a button down and slacks or even a suit.

The Cadet has been my office EDC for a few years now and I love it. I work in a city with a 3" blade restriction and have to wear dress clothes, so it's a great fit for my 9-5 needs, especially when paired with a Victorinox Manager on my keychain (which has the tweezers, scissors and a phillips). I think it's a good option in the summer with mesh/lightweight shorts too. It all depends on someones needs and environment. Good hot take though.

It's perfect for EDC. Your daily life is just very different from most people's. It's more than capable for what most people need, and it's small and light enough that the barrier to actually having it on you everyday is very low. As for how to carry it--TEC Accessories P7 clip. It's super low profile, retains very well, and the flexibility of it makes it basically disappear. I usually carry it when I'm wearing athletic/leisure wear when even my lighter knives would be awkward or even pull at the clothing. It's also great to hand over to people who don't know anything about folding knives and might be intimidate or not care for your primary. Yeah, screws are a common occurance, but most I encounter are tiny or specialized... so I keep a multi bit driver in my messanger bag with various bit sets. The on-board bits with the Leathermans wouldn't even work for most of them I touch. Also... That tool you don't understand---it's for taking care of your nails.

I keep a leatherman bond in my car console, but for edc, I rarely need more than what the huntsman, spyderco para 3 lw, and the style ps. I used to just drop a tinker in my pocket but as my edc grew I decided to make a leather slip to hold my keys and knife(I’ve found I don’t need to carry a lot of keys so it worked great, later I made slip 1.2 with a slot for a small flashlight). Being in construction I always have “real” tools that are capable of doing jobs no multi tool is “built” for in my truck. For outside of work I run a hitch and timber waxed canvas slip with a slip joint and keys in one pocket with a pry bar/1/4” driver and bits in the other pocket. Unless I’m in the woods I’ve never “needed” pliers or scissors in daily life when there wasn’t a pair close by anyway. I still like my tinker and the small screwdriver could be easily improved by removing the blade for the can opener(in a pinch my pry bar could open a can). My only real complaint about SAKs is the steel quality, if your listening SAK ppl I’ll bet your knives would fly off the shelves with upgraded steel(not necessarily just the blade either, liners/drivers/pins too).

I carried a Farmer for almost 15 years, both EDC and in the backcountry, and found it to be an extremely capable tool. Just this year I replaced it with a Hiker, which is a Tinker with a saw, and I think the Hiker is even better. I experiment with various tools, but this winter I've been packing just the Hiker and a Hatchet around the Canadian bush. These two tools, with the possible addition of a folding saw, can handle just about anything.

This may be the first time I've ever disagreed with one of your reviews! For me, the Cadet is the perfect "gentlemen's knife", or "church knife" for somone in the edc community. I have used all of the tools at one time or another. Besides the blade, I have used the file for small tasks and even for a broken fingernail. I've tightened door hinges and changed light switches with the screwdriver. Often, I carry many other, bigger knives and tools in more casual environments. These include the Benchmade Bugout, Spyderco's, and several various Leathermens, but the Cadet is just right when absolute minimalism is required.

I think that the big failure of multitool pliers is that when you have all the great tools in hand with your pricy one, but need the pliers on one side and the screwdriver on the other side, you just feel and look stupid :). So you need a combo. In my pocket for daily use, i keep the Victorinox explorer, less bulky and heavy than my M-pliers I keep as a backup in my bag. A Cadet instead would miss those wonderful Vic sak scissors, the corkscrew and the 3D Philips screwdriver in line (much more handy than the ones on a Tinker or the 2D of a Leatherman). Also have a the Vic Manager on my keyring, the perfect combo minitool for electronics or your toy's exercice in the vid. Concerning the can opener, it useful for me when the opening system fails with the mini handle off, instead of going on barbarian opening methods.

Whether stripping wire to solder to a circuit board, working on a car, fixing toys, or using while hiking; I use my tools a lot. It has the same tools as the Classic SD, including the small but still awesome scissors, a screw driver at the end of the file, and a small 3D Phillips, which I believe should be perfect for the toys. The Rambler is pretty small and light already, but if you can live without the small blade (I'm sure you can) and the file+SD, you can go for the Jetsetter. Same size as a Classic, but only with scissors + small Phillips (with bottle opener and wire stripper) and the scale tools of course.

Hi Aaron. Yes, you've raised an interesting dilemma! I've grappled with it for years, and have resorted to the only solution that works for me. I use them interchangeably and often both together! Why? Well, for starters, when in a work, urban or sometimes travel environment the tool that has a full size pliers is obviously more useful. However, when it domes to outdoors, hunting, hiking, etc the usefulness of the pliers is much less, so then the SAK comes into its own. I once managed a printing/stationery facility, and in that environment I liked having my Leatherman Wave on me, as I used it often. But I found that the other tools that my 4-layer Victorinox (I forget the model) had were of better quality. For example, I hardly ever used the Leatherman scissors (only when I had no SAK), as they were just too fiddly and didn't work even nearly as well. Similarly, the SAK awl/reamer is clearly in a class of its own - no other one comes close. One of the things I also dislike about the Wave is the sharp edges on the corners. Gripping it tightly rather hurts the hand and is very uncomfortable, whereas the SAK is loads more comfortable. Also, accessing the Wave's tools involves unfolding the tool and the closing it again after deploying the tool one wants. This is very fiddly, and I don't like it much. Lastly the Wave is much heavier than my 4-layer SAK, and needs a pouch to wear on the belt. I carry my SAK on a lanyard hanging inside my trouser pocket - very convenient. Screwdrivers: hmmm. Judging from the video and the uses you describe, I'd be inclined to have suitable screwdrivers available anyway for those specific applications. For things like hobbies, technical environments, sports equipment, etc it's just so easy to have the right running gear with that application in the kit it comes with. Working on a car? These days one needs a bloody laptop rather than a Wave!! I wouldn't have the expertise required anyway! So, for me the main thing for us is the outdoors application. For decades I've carried my faithful Swiss Champ, and it's still going strong. However, if I had to buy a multi-tool knife today, I think I'd go for the Hercules. Sure it's bigger/heavier, but it's also much more functional. Paired with my Cold Steel Trail Master, it is a really nice set-up, but it lacks something in the middle- a bushcrafting specialist knife. The Hercules can do quite a bit, but if one should want to do more specialist tasks like serious carving, cutting, notching etc one needs something a lot better. Currently the Victorinox Venture Pro is enjoying my attention more and more, as I really like the Victorinox philosophy towards knives and their use. I'm also a great admirer of Felix Immler and his exploits, books an videos. I'd like to hear your thoughts on my comments.

The SAK I carry daily is the Manager. Pen, surprisingly good Phillips driver, scissors - good stuff. That plus the pocket knife of the day, and I'm good. The nicest thing about having a small SAK in an office setting is you can hand it to someone who needs a knife. It'll be enough, and they can open and close it most of the time with no problem.

I had a discussion/disagreement with Ron Hood more than 40 years ago. Before Leatherman tools. I wanted a SAK with a scissors. Needed a scissors in the wild. He wanted a saw, not a scissors. I researched. The Huntsman had both. I bought about 10 of them, used, cheap, and cleaned them and put them in sheaths and put them all around. Good to have around. Good for a survival circle. Good for trading goods. Good to stick in a tackle box/car/pack/on a belt.

I EDC 2 Leatherman tools every day, and have another in my tool kit on my wheelchair. I own a couple Swiss Army knives, but really they never get pocket time. I do really need the pliers, and often need to hold the back/nut of the bold I am tightening or loosening, hence the 2 full size tools. for people with less need for the full size tools, I really wish Leatherman would bring back the mini. I stopped carrying my mini, because I don't want to risk breaking or losing it. but it was a fantastic tool.

I have to say I absolutly disagree. I carried the cadet for about 10 years on my key (3 of them in 10 years to be correct). And I realy like it. Its the backup thats allways with me and thats legal to carry basicly anywhere. I also carry at least one other big blade, but in terms of social acceptance it is a lot better to use the Cadet. I think it does everything well. The blaee cuts, the flathead ist very usefull also for a bit of prying, canopener works good, and the file is a NAILFILE a pretty good one to be honest and the thing on top is a nailcleaner not a screwdriver. I have never seen someone complaining about a nailfile to be a bad screwdriver 😅 On top the alternatives you showed are way bigger and yea of course they have more tools, but they are also thicer, heavier and need more space on your keyring. At least thats the way I see it.

After replacing the key ring with a smaller one (that they use on the 58 mm knives) and adding a P-7 type suspension clip, the Cadet is my super light weight summer carry - especially with running or basketball shorts! But I don't clip it to the pocket, I clip it to the waist band (on the inside). It's very secure, and I literally don't even notice it. It doesn't even weigh down my pocket at all.

My every day carry is a Victorinox Ambassador. It's got scissors, a nail file with a nail cleaner and a small blade good enough to open an envelope. It lives in my 5th pocket. A hung finger nail is the most threatening survival threat I face in my life :) And the scissors where more than useful at the local party conference where we selected delegates for the upcoming elections to the EU parliament. I cut a lot of paper for the ballot :) "Does anybody has scissors?" "Of cause I have scissors!"

@@gideonstactical Thanks! And for me it’s a modern folder on my strong side, a Victorinox Evolution (and flashlight)in my off hand pocket, and LM Squirt on my keychain. I used to carry a Cadet but the usefulness of the 3D Phillips, toothpick, and tweezers wins out - so I swapped to the Evolution. Plus the ergos are nice.

I feel like this video is a miss. The cadet’s purpose is for when size and weight are 100% more important than functionality. Maybe as a super slim backup option to your full size multitool, or you carry a dedicated fix it pouch in a bag and not on body, and this gives you minimal on body functionality, or you just want a classy minimalist knife that can do some minor screw driving/jimmying/shimmying/and personal care 🤷‍♂️ I feel like it wasn’t evaluated in that context at all. I understand that’s not your context, but I didn’t get the “this is a great option, just not for my lifestyle..” vibes. I got “this thing is pointless” vibes.

my main pocket knife for office job edc is a Victorinox tinker. I used to carry a leatherman every day, but I found I didn't use the pliers enough to warrant the extra bulk and weight, so I switched to the tinker and I love it. When I'm in the woods the tinker still comes along, but so do a mora and a leatherman wingman. sometimes the tinker is replaced by a Victorinox ranger 55 though. As a scouter, it's good to have the smaller knife like a tinker or fieldmaster so I can show kids how to get a lot of stuff done with something they're more likely to carry.

Although I have owned a Leatherman Wave from its inception, for it to be my EDC it is for me too bulky and heavy. Yes, I have a clip for it and a case, still it is bulky. For a long time my EDC is the SAK Huntsman, owned it a long time. If I were to purchase another EDC it would be the SAK Ranger. Here is an interesting observation, pull out the Leatherman folks give me strange looks, however pulling out the SAK folks do not blink and eye; just my personal observations. People have actually asked about it, in a very positive way, what tools, and the like.

With the file the pointy bit can be used as a nail cleaner. Great video as always. I’m looking at the new magnacut leatherman and the the charge tti with s30v. I prefer the charge , but I’m thinking blade steel now . So I guess my question is , is magnacut really that much better than s30v ? . Happy new year. As a sort of non professional multi tool user, I must say I’ve never had a problem with victorinox steel, but I have found standard leatherman steel very brittle, so maybe it’s harder edge retention wise but is that always a good thing in a general purpose multi tool which may be quite springy and also has fantastic corrosion resistance? , I really can’t knock vic steel

To be honest I have a Leatherman in my Car but a Cadet in my pocket in a leather Caddy with a space bullet pen and a small flashlight in my front pocket. My main Blade is either a 940, a Bugout, Para 2, or a Small Sebenza 21 and I have Belt Sheath for all of them never sharing pocket space. Since I work in an office and most of my cutting is minor things such as unboxing or opening mail I use the Cadet. It is also less intimidating in public around strangers at lunch time pealing an apple. I do own a Tinket as well but since it's a lot heavier I gravitate towards the Caddy with the Cadet. I would say it depends on your daily routine but nothing is permanent in my EDC I am always adjusting. The only thing that has not changed for a decade is my G-Shock DW model with Nato Straps.

Just speaking for one item on SAK , the can opener. My job requires me to spend several days a week in our office. Normally cannot go out for lunch. So, to save time and $$, often eat out of cans. The can-opener on my SAK evo-grip has no equal for that task. In addition, it takes up a lot less space in my desk then a dedicated can-opener, and works every time. The other tools, i.e., the knife blade, the awl and the standard and phillips drivers, and the fingernail file, all come in handy, too. Also don't get dirty looks with a yellow-handled SAK from the other office-types. So, the best EDC is situation-specific sometimes.

I carried a Leatherman wave in my pocket with a custom pocket clip for years. Didn't find it cumbersome at all. But my daily life didn't find it necessary because of a change in my job. Now I carry my wave on my belt if I'm hiking camping, hunting or fishing. On top of my every day pocket knife, and usually a dedicated fixed blade which all depends on what activity I'm doing. Still own my swiss army knife that I've had since I was a kid. But it doesn't get much use anymore.

Of course it's always just about use case for the individual carrying the tool. As an electrician I carry a Skeletool every single M-F. Having a pair of pliers, cutters, screwdriver, and more importantly a one handed opening very usable knife on me at all times is great. However, even though its a relatively small light tool, I can fully understand it being bigger, bulkier, heavier than someone in an office setting would want at all times. Same goes for the power pint its a solid little multi but I never actually carry it, as the tool set doesnt really fit for me. It just lives in a pouch for the just in cases. When I'm not at work and carrying an actual pocket knife I like to have my leatherman style ps (a much more comparable tool) with me, giving me small pliers, scissors, screwdriver/prytool, and a cap lifter. P.S. not a leatherman fanboy those tools just fit my needs and work for me.
