You know your saks! Great coverage of the Farmer X. Cant go wrong with a sleek build that doesnt lose out significantly on functionality

Glad I got one over a year ago as the prices have gone up considerably. I was expecting them to actually come down in price after initial release, thinking that more suppliers would stock them and compete against each other on prices but actually that hasn't happened, I have 10 Victorinox knives, including the black Swisschamp same as you, and the Farmer X is in the top 3 most used in my rotation, with the Champ, and the Climber black which I'm carrying today. With the Farmer X I don't have to worry about dropping it as there will be zero damage to the scales, whereas I have to be more careful when I carry a celidor model. I generally carry the Farmer X (and the Climber) together with my Knipex Cobra XS, that's a pretty capable and solid toolset.

Nail nick on the scissors: it's strange indeed. It would have even more place on the other side. But you can get used to it. I already find my Cellidors strange :D But they had their reason to do it that way. They introduced the Pioneer X, the first alox with scissors (except for a prototype in the 50s) in 2016, when they were already getting ready to replace their old 111 mm slide lock models by liner lock ones in 2017. The liner lock models use thicker rivets than the slide lock ones. The liner lock rivet diameter is the same as on 93 mm alox. So, they designed these scissors to fit the 93 mm alox models as well as the new 111 mm liner lock models (e.g. Outrider) - but on the 111 knives, the nail nick wouldn't be accesible on the other side. And they can probably save some cost (and avoid confusion at assembly/repair) when they don't produce the very same tool but with the nail nick on different sides.

The pins on both ends are nor brass but nickel silver, just like tge spacers between the layers. The middle one was also made of nickel silver for decades, they inly switched back to steel a few years ago (2021 I think). They probably realized that they need more strength on 3-4 layer alox knives.

Yes, the key ring is what annoys me on the vics I own, as usually they are a hot spot which hurts the palm when using the blade in force when carving wood, for example.

Out of all medium sized Victorinox Alox models, Farmer X has the most tools and it's also the only four layer Alox model, so it could be probably called as a flagship of that line.

I din't oen a Swiss Champ but I doubt that the saw and the fish scaler would share the same spring. They don't have a spacer between them, but it shouldn't be the same spring. But you are right in that the Alox tools tend to have noticeably stronger snap, probably also due to the lack of back side tools (although the Cellidor saw doesn't have any back side tools either, I believe).

I have to agree with you on the key ring placement. I find it digs into my hand when using the saw, knife blade, and can opener. However, on further examination you will see that it has to be in this position in order to not interfere with the awl, scissors.and bottle opener when they are in the open position. The only option I can see is to cut the lanyard hole off but I like using the suspension clip for pocket carry. The awl placement is one of the main reasons I purchased this model, the scales being the other. I guess I will just have to compromise.

Es ist so schmal wie ein climber und das ist echt gut für ein 4 Layer Taschenmesser . Perfekt für den Sommer am See 😊

The Farmer X looks like it would be almost the perfect knife for me. However, the Alox knives are so expensive compared to the other SAK's. You can buy a Fieldmaster or Hunstman for half the price with more tools. I wish Victorinox would do the Farmer X configuration in the 91mm plastic scales. It would be in the $20-$30 range.

1:16 "wouldn't have been that hard" - Of course it would. You'll realize if you open up the reamer... If the key ring was the way it is on the Cellidor models, you wouldn't be able to open up the tools. Also, you said "old older models" - well, the Farmer X is a new model indeed, but the Pioneer-line (93 mm Alox) was designed in the 50s (introduced in 1957) - more than a decade earlier than Victorinox was using any key rings at all! Knives either had a bail or nothing back then. So the key ring feature was added to the design later (around '68 I believe), and they put it in the only place where it fits without being in the way of any tool. And honestly, how often do you put that SAK down on a flat surface? 😅 With that being said: I hate the key ring myself, especially on 93 mm alox - but I hate it because it digs into my palm while using the knife. I grind it off on almost all of my alox knives. But unfortunately, the key ring is pretty useful for carrying the knife on a suspension clip. I only kept it on a Cadet and a Pioneer X for that reason.

The moment you need both hands to open a pocket knife it fails.. Get a Leatherman
