I know... old video. But I was looking for a larger Swiss Army Knife and watched this recently. I found a good deal on a Rangergrip 79 and bought it instead of the forester. No blade play, no lock rock, out of the box. You asked for such info in the vid-- no idea if it is still of interest.

Hi, I think that the liner lock is added to prevent blade from closing only, not to keep it open like most liner locks. Even without the lock the blade will stay open because of the regular back spring just like on the 90mm ones. It was never intended to be i tide fit I think. I very happy with mine. I have a video on one that was abused for a year and after I cleaned it and sharpened with a rock I fou is back to normal. Cheers

I have a sentinel it has no side-to-side play only front-to-back. I was going to use the sentinel blade for a different knife but i decided to just get a forest M grip one handed opening. Tough choices I like having a set of tweezers and a toothpick but I also want to saw and a one handed opening blade. Finding the right combinations of tools is hard sometimes.

I have many folding knives incl. spydercos, kershaws etc., but the good oil' Vic's is the most used ones. When I need a knife I reach out and grab one of them... there's something to hem....

My thoughts exactly. I've been collecting and using knives for many years, about 2 decades, and my conclusion after all this time is that nobody needs to spend more than for a large Vic in order to have a fantastic quality and very practical folding knife. All those overpriced Spydercos or tactical Extrema Ratios or whatever are simply just that - overpriced. No additional advantages. Folding knives are anyway not made for battoning or splitting logs, and for regular cutting purposes, the Vic is unparalleled in terms of quality/performance vs. price.

Thanks Cedric I'm looking at one of these for my almost compact survival kit. I like the fact that it has a resonable blade and a reasonable saw which would get you out of trouble if needs be. In NSW you're not allowed to carry a knife which includes these but the police generally don't fuss so it can mean that in certain circumstances this could be it. So definately better than nothing. Followed the link to aussie knives...such fun, oh dear!

Handy little Forrester! I went out looking for similar things in a SAK (big blade, saw, bottle/can opener) and landed on the Victorinox Hunter. Similar 111mm size but with the can/bottle opener combi tool that leaves space for a secondary serrated blade. I get the same up/down blade play with the sliding lock on the hunter's traditional scales, bugs the hell out of me but otherwise flawless.

i have been wanting to get the victorinox rangergrip 79 but found this one on amazon as well at less than half the price and the one handed version too! i have the Hercules so im used to the left handed style lockbar. i think this will be a very good edc pocket knife and a great pairing for my Hercules!

I also found the one hand Forster on Amazon for about $37. I got the ranger grip 79 from ebay for $50. Both are great knives but I think I like the 111mm more.

My Hunter XT does the same thing. It's got that up-down play, but that is fine. And I think they're fine with it too. On an ordinary knife with a liner lock, you'll have a lock that engages the blade tang and will eventually wear out or can be moved all the way over in some cases when you push or squeeze it, which is then a pain to move back. I think Vics way of doing it is great, with a liner lock that goes all the way to the other side, you'll get some blade play, but it'll never ever get worse. The backspring keeps the blade in the open position and the blade tang only bumps up against the liner if you push on the blades spine. The only knife I bring to the forest sometimes, is the Hunter XT or Camper. While you can't baton large pieces of wood with these blades, most of the time you don't need to do that over here to get a fire started.

This video kinda made me want to have one of these 111mm knives. Never really bothered with these as the 130mm line felt more powerful, but in your hand that tool actually looks pretty sweet.

For a knife/tool with such traditional values and whose strength is that traditional, non threatening, wholesome, quality aesthetic, I'd prefer it if the handle had more of that old school vibe. Make it bright red plastic or red anodised checkered aluminium, not this soft attempt at modernisation with those black plastic-fantastic details. Make the shield a separate component with nice white lines and a glossy finish fitted onto the handle rather than just moulded in. It currently has the look of some budget gardening tool you'd buy at Big W.

Sounds like the rucksack variant is the one for you! Yeah, its not pretty. Comfy though!

Actually, it looks like the designer that came up with the Gerber Bear Grylls look had a hand in this.

I love the new scales, BUT why oh why no tweezers and toothpick?! I bought one to check it out, but I really miss those two small additions that have so often proved invaluable to me, mostly the tweezers for pulling out thorns/splinters, but also the toothpick, and not necessarily for tooth picking :)

I've had the old forester but settled on the new Soldier and trail master.....one hand over etc I've got a couple Wenger Rangers ....they are even bigger ....with a noticeably larger saw. I scored the Patagonia race version from kogan when they were clearing Wenger stock for $30 ish...Pretty sure Victorinox still makes em but with the Vic brand now. Have you checked out Sakwiki.com?

Excellent video as always, I really like that model you chose over my Vic Soldier 2008 because of that non serrated blade. Ive come full circle on my knife choice, these days I find myself carrying a swiss army Farmer/Ranger as my EDC and it suits me perfectly. I find I just pause to admire them more often for their old world charm. I also love having a wood saw in addition to a blade when out walking. Thanks for the review might pick one of those up. cheers

I prefer the Victorinox Swiss Soldiers Knife, which is basically the same knife, just with one-handed opening blade and a phil-head screwdriver instead of that wine-bottle-opener. :D But ya can`t really go wrong with a Victorinox :)

What do people usually use the cork screw for?
@CedricAda8 жыл бұрын
I never use it, but I see some guys use it to untie paracord box knots and other tricky or tight knots at camp. I havent seen corked wine for a long time.
@chienlinchen88778 жыл бұрын
+CedricAda Gear and Outdoors I can see that you are an eyeglass user, you can put a victorinox mini screwdriver in corkscrew, just in case you need to adjust eyeglass or small electronic devise's screw. : )

I use mine for wine, untangling knots, and shallow drilling for things that need to be pulled out.

You can also use it as a carrier for little ferro rods and helix shaped compressed tinder in there for fire starting.

my Victorinox rangerwood 55 has no blade play.
@silvanigra7 жыл бұрын
Blade play is a lottery with Victorinox, I own about 6-7 large ones with lockable blade and some of them have some (acceptable) blade play, while the rest are rock solid. What I noticed is that most of them DO have some blade play, it's a matter of millimetric precision and as long as it's not too much, it doesn't bother me.
