I am being super picky about finding one knife that can cover 90% of everything I could ever want.. Is it possible? Is this the one?
Let's open the box and find out.

I came to the same conclusions as you. I went with the one hand Trekker instead of locksmith smith based on color. I found it in black for about $40. I chose black bc my wife wouldnt notice a new black knife in the house but a red knife would have stood out. For almost $50 difference I figured could without a file. The 3 layer Trekker fits great in my hand.

Love the 111mm Swiss Army knife series. I didn’t need one handed opening and wanted a multi tool but more knife oriented. Settled on the WorkChamp which in addition to the toolset on the Locksmith has scissors, pliers and 2 inline Phillips. It’s been a fool’s errand trying to find the perfect EDC knife. You have to settle or make it yourself. If Victorinox only had a custom knife shop and let buyers pay a premium to configure the toolset to create their “perfect” knife. Pretty sure people would pay 3 or even 4 times the cost for that option. People are customizing SAKs for much more then that right now. Great review, interesting option for an outdoor knife with one handed opening. Still completely baffled as to why Victorinox called it the Locksmith?

The saw on the larger SAKs is really nice. It’s smaller than say a folding hiker’s saw, but only a little bit. It’s big enough to deal with larger branches easily, and in a pinch you can even do a small log, by working from both sides.

I enjoyed your video and agreed with your review, especially when it comes to the daily need for pliers, hence why I normally carry a 91 mm Victorinox around the office over a LM or other large MT. But when I do go with a 111mm Victorinox, the one tool that is a must for me to have are scissors... Scissors besides the drivers are the tool set i find useful the most. Take a look at the Hercules, it has those dinky pliers and a tad big yes, but look for the older side lock model, not the liner lock. It comes in a 2-3 grams lighter than the liner lock version. Although it was not done on purpose, but the Victorinox liner lock is geared for south paws like myself, no issues at all with opening or closing... You can find the NOS side locking versions still on the Bay from points east, namely those that once made up the former USSR, which are again referred to as they originally were, Russia and Ukraine... A Hercules with a sidelock, I think you'd be impressed...

I love that idea as well, but I guess that the logistics of such a global brand trying to build all those one-off's for people would be a tremendous and expensive undertaking. When you look at what you get, they keep the prices reasonable because of their ability to quickly mass produce these knives. Slowing down the process for a bunch of different order for one knife here, two of that type, but 500 such order coming in a day would really be difficult. if I could design my own, I would want an Adventurer with a single hand opening non-serrated main blade. And I would want to see the ALOX folders like the Farmer, Pioneer and Electrician, simply made larger. While I do carry them from time to time, they are really small. I would love to see the entire package sized increased by maybe 1/3. Make the main blade perhaps around 3.25" or so, and the handle a little longer, but not much thicker. Most of their folders are meant for little hands... If they made Alox knives in the size of the Adventurer, I would be in Heaven...

I have this knife but it has no toothpick or tweezer spot...it's baffling to me how Victorinox is so good at leaving us with almost perfect knives except for obvious faults. In this case no toothpick slot means no ability to add a firefly fire steel. The corkscrew allows for a fire-ant, but there is no single knife that allows for a OH, toothpick AND corkscrew so that I didn't have to give up the toothpick. I never use the tweezers, but the firefly won't fit in that slot.

Interesting thoughts on a hidden gem in the lineup. I really like the metal saw/file and wish it was used instead of the wood saw on many models. I wanted to ask... have you tried the 111mm semi-serrated blade? I've never liked serrations on any of my knives before, but when I got the Cheese Master, I found I had been too quick to judge. Having the plain edge at the base for fine work and the extremely sharp serrated portion towards the tip works so well -- makes me wonder why most semis have them the other way around. I later picked up a fully-serrated Spartan just because it was only a few bucks on clearance and holy smokes is it ever sharp. I'm sure it'll be more of a pain to sharpen (at least they're only single-sided) but they're the first serrations I've been impressed with.

@@captivatedroid69 How is the one handed opening? I find the RangerGrip series to be decent, but the Locksmith is wonky.. It's not designed for it, and so the finger hole is the wrong size, in the wrong place and the blade is too far from the edge... It's not bad if you hold it in the perfect grip... but be off a little bit and it doesn't open well... Maybe I am just spoiled from years of proper flippers, thumb studs, Axis lock based knives and OTF's... The Ruike opens properly... They put some thought into the design... I could probably make a one handed Trekker work, as it is thinner than the Locksmith, but closing one handed is still not as smooth, and I hate the blunted, "safety" tips on their knives. The RangerGrip has a proper piercing point... Not sure why the Victorinox knives won't follow suit. I feel like a blunt point is more dangerous, because it forces you to have to use a lot more pressure to push the knife into something... so if it does slip off, it's more likely to hurt you or whatever you are trying to pierce...

This is my biggest gripe with Victorinox, out of the 2 dozen or so models I have, not one of them is perfect. It's always the case where if they would add this or change this one tool to that tool it would be perfect. It's almost like they strive for almost perfect on every model. I'm sure Swiss uses will differ from my American uses. I'm definitely not the only one to complain about having a dozen almost perfect knives either though. I recently found out that the locksmith was being discontinued and its one of the models that's really close to being just right for me. I haven't wanted to spend the 111mm price for one though. Seems like I gotta just buy one and deal with the price. That price range has just so many great knives and tools and there's always something I want a little bit more that I buy over a large Victorinox.
