Fun Story Time. I've carried a Swiss Champ or similar type knife with me for years. About 30, or so years back, while I was in the military, my group was flying on a commercial instead of military airlift. So, w're going through security. I empty my pockets and the girl picks up my SAK. It met legal requirements at the time and you could carry a pocket knife back then for those of you out ther young enough not to remember those days. Anyway, the girl picks up my knife, opens up very single feature of it and just stands there, loking at it. She tells me, "Sir, I think this can be considered a weapon." Without skipping a beat, I tell her: "Ma'am, it's just a Swiss Army Knife. the Swiss are a Neutral Country. They don't have weapons." She looks like the lights just went on behind her eyes, she folds it all back together, hands me back my things and lets me go. My guys wee standing there in utter amazement that 1. I was able to come up with something like that, so quick without even stuttering, and 2. That the girl bought it.

I'm 62 years old and from age 18 to 60 I worked as an Industrial Maintenance Man for GE here in the US. For about the first 20 of those years I was never without a Swiss Army Knife in my pocket. I was the butt of many jokes because of it but I can't even begin to guess how many miles I saved avoiding trips back to my toolbox because I had a usable version of the tool I forgot right there on my knife. I eventually ended up with the Swiss Champ and carried it for 15 years and would like to respectfully disagree with you on a couple of your comments. The fish scaling tool is not that effective but, as you stated, the hook remover is, although that is not why you are wrong about that being a wasted spot on the knife. Those things are on there to avoid wasting space on the RULER, which is a very useful piece of kit, as I think you guys say. The narrow screwdriver on the back of the knife will access deeply recessed screws (Phillips as well as flats, in a pinch). The reason that I eventually stopped carrying my trusty Swiss Champ was not because of the ribbing I had to take, as you might have suspected ( I would just tell the jokester that I carried it to help him out if he needed a piss, as I handed him the knife with its magnifying glass and tweezers deployed)but rather because they are too expensive to replace. You mentioned issues with the scales getting scratched and I say I wish that was the biggest problem with them. If you ever have occasion to drop a Champ from anywhere near shoulder height onto a ceramic tile or concrete surface the scales will pop off and cannot be put back on. They are so shallowly over-molded onto a pair of rivets that they just tear out the plastic. If you drop them later without the scales the liners bend and you can't open the outer blades/tools. I am new to your channel but I already love it. Good stuff!

Used it through my army days and in the jungles of Brunei 3 times and then as my travel companion as I studied in the UK and then as I travelled for work around APAC. It’s the Best! Had one for over thirty years and UPS lost it. Forgot I had it going on a flight and was made to mail it to collect when I got home. A distance of 9 kilometres and all I got was an empty envelope. Made a complaint and they gave me money to replace it but not without a fight. Their policy was up to $2:50 cents for postage 😡 Magnifying glass is plastic and not as strong as my original the rest just the same. So yes I've got a new one but still miss the original as it was a gift from my daughters. Was well used and stood up well, used the hook to pull up and tighten big boot laces, carry parcels hung a light from it many uses. Used it almost daily when truck driving for any amount of things. Used cork screw to undo tightened knots, small pin for digging out splinters or bursting blood blisters, opened canned food regularly no problem you eventually runout of things to use them on. I love them because you can get a load of spares for them still even new plastic sides. Often copied never beaten.

I use the can opener a lot for scraping off calibration stickers when I'm replacing them on Medical equipment that I calibrate. Any excuse to break out my Swiss Army knife. I also use it to open cans sometimes to show off in front of my seven-year-old son, to let him know his old man is a bad ass; he sees right through me LOL.

@@mikec6111 First you have an object of known height next to the tree. A buddy that 6’ tall works. Back off a ways and hold your scaler vertically at arm’s length, then count the number of notches that represent 6’. Then compare the scale to the tree and count the number of notches. If 6’ equalled 4 notches and the tree is 10 notches tall then that translates to 14’. This is an estimation but better than guessing.

Victorinox pliers can be used as a vice/clamp. Need to glue something together, or solder wire (which will get hot during the process)? Place item in the teeth, close the plier back into the tool (as if storing it), and the tension will vice grip the item, freeing up both your hands.

First off, I HATE table top reviews. That said, this was a fantastic and extremely thorough description. I really like how you did some cut away's to show the knifes uses. Well done. As far as the file, the serrated spine I find works well to shave magnesium rods for fire starting. You'll have to give it a try. Works great. Also, the actual file sides are great for during up notches. If you're making a bow string notch or a square notch, there is no better tool for refining them. Again, great job.

I own several iterations of this knife, the first was purchased as the "SOS" set nearly 40 years ago (I had it refurbished a couple of years back). A wooden handled one as well as a couple with black and blue scales also lurk about the house. In my opinion, the best "bang for the buck" of the Swiss Army Knife series.

The tip of the file can be used on small Phillips head screws like the ones you find on computer equipment, as well as cleaning your nails. I've also read that the fish scaler makes a good tool for pumpkin carving. As for the can opener, it's also a 2D Phillips head screwdriver and can be used to bend wire.

I have two different categories of multi-tools: "more indoor than outdoor" and "more outdoor than indoor". Some of these are fairly straight-forward: as someone who maintains a model train layout, firearms, knives, and model cars, I use a Leatherman Surge with bit kit and bit driver for that quite a lot, so for me, that's more indoor than outdoor. My father's like new in box Wenger from the mid seventies is also like this...it sees light use, certainly, but is mostly a collector's piece. For the "more outdoor than indoor", there's my Victorinox Tinker and also the Victorinox Standard (very similar to the modern Spartan) that Dad gave me a number of years ago (his other two Victorinox Standards are still in use and I hope they're not mine for a long time, truthfully). But the SwissChamp is more or less right down the middle. For me personally, more indoor than outdoor, but I have found uses for most of the tools all the same. I'd have to say I've used every part of it save the fish scaler and the pin for something. And really, a lot of these attachments can do a lot more than their advertised purpose without doing anything dangerous. Here's what I've come up with, both as-advertised and things I've used in practice that I have found to work (aside from the knife blades doing things expected of knife blades of the larger and pen blade sizes)... -I have used the cap lifter as a flathead screwdriver and I have stripped wire with it in addition to the obvious cracking open of bottles, so I've mostly stuck to the factory recommendation. However, if you have a comparatively gentle prying task (loosening a plastic lid on a bottle dried by paint, for instance), I have found it to work well at that. -The can opener, being sharp, makes a surprisingly good starter for perforated cardboard (and also works as a smaller flathead screwdriver). -The 45 degree stop for the Phillips screwdriver really comes in handy if you want to get a bit more torque on your screw. However, generally speaking, I prefer a Leatherman Surge when it comes to all things screw-related (I am giving the SwissChamp a pass for flathead screws simply because they're pretty easy in general). -The magnifying glass is great for painting up figures to standard for my model train layout, when you consider they're about 1/45 scale. I'll generally rest the knife on its side for this, leaving both of my hands free to hold the figure and paint brush. -The pliers come in handy for detail work, but again, bit advantage to Leatherman. Where these really shine is if I'm doing something outdoors. The wire cutter on the pliers can also double as a wire stripper with a bit of practice and the wire crimper really tends to come in handy, and I find it can also crimp very thin pieces of metal, such as photo-etched detail parts for use on a model kit. -Honestly, there's not much I haven't used the scissors for. I like that you can unlatch them as well as perform detail work. These even work with cutting plastic parts off sprues (with an XActo knife or pen blade doing the more detailed work). -A ruler is a ruler, but if you've ever tried gathering twine to use for an arts and crafts project (or in my case, my layout) and licking your fingers repeatedly in hopes of having it stick there, try using the fishhook disgorger. It works surprisingly well. -I usually use the saw to cut wood, but it's fine for acrylic material and modeling plastic; not just cutting, but also roughing up if you want a really weathered look. -I've filed everything from my nails to various types of plastics and wood with both sides of the file. I've also used the bottom edge for white metal in the construction of models and in a pinch, the bottom edge can be used to make notches in wood or plastic if you want to make joints that can fit together. -The reamer/sewing awl goes through softer wood pretty nicely. I've used it to start screw and nail holes (although it's really a pain to open; probably the second most annoying tool to actually deploy). -If you ever put something over an open fire and decide to get it boiling and remember to leave some sort of handle for it, odds are that handle is made of metal and will get pretty hot. That's what I find the hook to come in handy for. -The flathead screwdriver on the back gets comparatively little use, but it is certainly serviceable and I have used it. I also like that you can wrap your hand around it and use it on tough screws that have rust or minor damage or were just screwed in too tight. -The fingernail-cracking chisel (another use for the file, everyone!) works great when open, especially since on a model train layout, if you are creating a landscape, you're looking for the kind of precision work that only a very small, sharp, planer will give you. However, my complaint here is how difficult to access it is. It's true that the reamer/awl seems more heavily sprung, but it's also more accessible. -The corkscrew works wonders on your shoelaces if you're wearing gloves and you've done something like double-knot or triple-knot the laces. -I don't use the pen often, but it does write pretty well and it's often the only pen I have on me (I prefer pencils). -The tweezers are just the thing for placing 1/45 scale figures on a layout, especially if you stick the tips into pieces of packing peanuts so as not to mar the finish that you've just painted on or touched up. They also work wonders on removing the splinters from drilling holes in your table to run wire through. -I don't actually use the toothpick as a toothpick; I'm rather insistent on wood for doing that. However, I find it useful both to get dried paint out from under my fingernails as well as to apply paint on model airplane canopies (you can easily scrape it off the toothpick once you're finished or replace the toothpick after you've done a bit too much scraping). -As someone who wears prescription glasses, the eyeglass repair screwdriver is really appreciated. -Okay, there is a third thing I've never used: the key ring. I have found a little tan canvas pouch for this that I believe was originally made for some sort of tool (from the cuts in the side, I'll guess pliers or wire-cutters) and it's pretty bland and unmarked, but it does have a belt loop on it and really, that's good enough for me. I'm not going to be carrying it with keys any time soon, I'm afraid! Keep up the nice videos!

That blade is one 'Evil Sumbitch' so run screaming like a 9-yr.old girl if someone threatens you with a 'toy for sissies to play pretend with' because that blade is 'bad news'*

I grew up using simpler SAK models like the Camper, and the Swisschamp was always something I wanted just because I thought it was so damn cool but it was way too expensive for me as a teenager. A few years back I found one in a decent knick at a fleamarket that I gladly picked up - it usually lives at my desk and as a compact "toolbox" (together with the Leatherman Wave for more heavy duty stuff) around the house it is perfect for me and whenever I've travelled in the country or such it is a perfect companion.

I think this knife was introduced in 1985. I got mine about 1990, maybe a little after. but I've had it for a long time. This one is slightly different, I noticed that the magnifying glass is different. This is a knife I keep in my car as a pinch in case I need something and don't have tools. it's a great tool.

When I had to send my newer Swiss Champ to the factory for a repair, I had them swap out the cheap plastic magnifying glass for the more durable and functional old style one that was gray. They did it for free and no more lens popping out. 😁

My Champ lives in my camera bag, all the screw drivers, pliers, funny little hook lifter thing (holding flowers for macro shots), file, scissors (after 30 years need new spring) and wood saw are all used on a very regular basis. The crimper behind the pliers head get fairly regular use but you missed that out. The file is incredibly well made as is the knife, there’s videos showing how they furnace and temper the steel, it’s actually one of the toughest out. The file has a wood file, nail file [the criss cross side] and metal saw. Victorinox do put a lot of effort into the composites of the metal used for each tool. I must admit my SAK has been part of my life for so long I just took it for granted. My late mother bought mine from Switzerland in the mid 80s so it now has sentimental value as well. I think prior to seeing the videos if I was buying now I'd be tempted towards the Leatherman, but now I've seen just how well the SAK is made I would buy the Champ again. Great video, but when there’s about 30 tools it’s hard to remember them all.

I have been carrying a Swiss Champ for something over 40 years now; on my belt, it's a part of my wardrobe. The only thing that ever broke, was the spring on the pliers, that fatigued out. Replaced for $5.00. The pliers get used frequently for pulling my eyelashes that grow into my eyes. Over time, I have used just about everything on the knife. The blades hold an edge rather well; the whole assembly being made of 440C Stainless, with a Rockwell Hardness that tested at C54. It goes with me everywhere.

My Swiss champ saved the day at beach. Our mini fridge freezer was 4 inches of frost and ice and unusable. Used the fish scaler, file and main blade as ice pick or to cut into the ice and took some time but got job done. Hair dryer assisted as well.

The awl is an all-purpose sewing tool as well. It is very good for removing existing stitching. The rounded side toward the material allows you to pick out the thread without the risk of digging into the cloth/material. Then it works well for sewing, especially thicker or more resistant materials like canvas and leather.

Watch videos on each tool, they all have many uses. One vid showed a hundred uses for the hook. The fish scaler also has many uses. "Think outside the box" & use imagination. [When you get older & your hands get stiff, you might be happy at the size of the champ.]

The small flathead screwdriver on the back is perfect for electrical connecter blocks or any deep set screws again mainly on electrical items.. something that the can opener screwdriver can't do and it can be used on small Philip head screws.

About metal file, it is hardened for about 56 HRC, so it is usable for weak steel like rebars, construction steel, nails and so. However, when used on hardened steel (axe blade for example), file will fail and will be damaged. So, practically, it is usefull for small application in the field. Oh, and its good to brush the nails.

I managed to get a good utility use out of the file the other day. I work as a field tech for a chimney sweep company that services apartments, so I'm going into a lot of units on the daily. Had this one vacant unit where the key wasn't going in because a groove was much too steep for the pin to be pushed up. Pulled out the file and filed away a little bit of the metal just enough to angle it so that the key could insert all the way and unlock the door. Never thought I'd get use out of that function but then it proved to be extremely convenient.

The Swiss champ punches so far above its weight it’s insane I’ve owned one for 15 years and used it almost daily and every tool on it at least once a month for something The pliers are a thing of beauty, I’ve used them as vice grips with tape, for taking rusted bolts off, breaking stuff off other things and they are still in perfect condition, I think it’s down to how sharp the waves are on it that is just digs into things so doesn’t require as much grip force, he’ll half the time I reach for them over a full sized set of pliers I’ve used the saw and file for shaping brass, bronze and even iron so many times and it’s Basically as good as new. The Philips screwdriver is one of the best ones I’ve ever used, honestly if they sold a full sized one I’d buy it tomorrow. The tools on the back are great for random prying and stabbing jobs where you don’t want to dull or bend a more specialised tool Only issue I’ve ever had with this thing is if you get any kind of gunk in the scissor joint you can not get it back out so mine don’t move as well as they used to, but they still work

This is actually great that you compare the Swisschamp with a Squirt, this is exactly what I bought mine to replace! All too often you see uploaders comparing the Squirt with 58mm Victorinox's like the Rambler, or comparing the Swisschamp with fullsize tools like the Leatherman Wave! The Wave should be compared to the Swisstool but of course if that is done it will come off worse. I just bought a Swisschamp, with black scales, with free next day delivery, for £57. A Leatherman Squirt PS4 if you can find one now, will cost you minimum £50 plus delivery! As to size, sure you can't hang the Swisschamp off a keychain but I never did that anyway, instead it sat in my 5th pocket, and the Swisschamp fits there snugly too! The scissors and Phillips driver on the Swisschamp are 10x as good as those on the Squirt, even before the scissors on my Squirt broke they were not fit for purpose due to so much blade play, so neither capable of snipping hairs or cotton thread which just bent between the blades, nor for cutting cardboard or paracord. SAK scissors can do all of that, even the 58mm ones. I bought the Swisschamp not only as a standalone pocket tool for around the home and local area, but also because I've been experimenting recently with carrying a folder (Spyderco Urban mostly) combined with Knipex Cobra XS pliers. But that is lacking scissors which I do use a lot, so I added the Victorinox 74mm Moneyclip for it's compact scissors...but then I needed at least a flathead and a Phillips so I bought a folding pocket bit driver...which on it's own occupied all of my 5th pocket, the same as my Swisschamp! So the Champ justifies it's real estate just for it's 5 drivers (okay 2 are tiny) and scissors and gives me a whole bunch of other very good tools, like the woodsaw which is way sturdier and a bit longer than the one on my Leatherman Rebar, the file, the reamer and lots of other little tools. On my other 93mm SAKs I tend to use the small blade a lot, for opening packaging etc. I can't see myself using the main blade on the Champ much as it's a tad awkward to use, being way off centre, and the whole tool itself being a bit of a brick in the hand. But the Swisschamp will fill the gaps missing in my Spyderco/Knipex basic toolset, which I do like as those 2 are very capable and good at their respective tasks. Again, way better than the blades and pliers on any Leatherman.

I've learned to car wax my firearms as soon as I buy them. It cuts down on rust, metal on metal wear, corrosion, finger prints, grime, and speeds up cleaning and maintenance. Once you clean your LM, car wax half the "side", or arm, and after three months of use, see if the wax helped. :)

I EDC a ruby red swisschamp. Compared to Leatherman MTs, SAK are much higher quality. I keep an LM in my glovebox for any instance where I need to abuse a pliers specific tool to get out of a jam. But it’s mainly because I bought it and after a few days of belt sheath carry, as it’s too big for the pocket, I decided it’s otherwise worthless to me. My Swisschamp is in my pocket daily though and is much more useful for just about any situation. The other thing is when I bought my LM it arrived broken and I had to send it back to be replaced. I’ve never had that with a SAK. In fact the last 2 LM I bought arrived broken. I won’t give them any more of my money. My next pliers centric tool will be a spirit. Or a Wilson combat tool.

I have carried various Swiss Army Knives since I was 10 years old when I was given my first .I am never without the Swiss Champ nor have been for 30 years I love most of them but I love the Champ and Work Champ and the Explorer the best .If you don't have a SAK I suggest you get one you will love it .

What I mean, is the family SUV made by Subaru, they have several models in their line-up; the Crosstreck that goes by the name XV here, the Legacy and then the Outback with the slighty larger ground clearing and also others depending on the country.😃These cars are somewhat well known for their ability to get you where you need to be, according to the owners that`s it😃.

I’ve used the hook a couple of times, actually. I ride my bicycle a lot and there have been occasions the bicycle’s chain derailed a bit for some odd reason. So you turn the bicycle around and you can easily pull the chain onto the cog with the hook. I tried doing it with my hand, but you don’t have a lot of space, your hands get dirty and it’s way harder to hold it in place.

Great video thanks. I been planning to get the Swiss Champ to add to my collection. I have the Swiss Champion Plus. I also have the Handyman that has plyers. I EDC the Handyman with the Midnite Minnie Champ most days & that covers most my needs. But I miss the magnifying 🔎 glass and fish scaler & in-line Philips screw driver at times when I EDC. I like my ruler on SAK fish scales tool for the ruler the most. I love being able to compare cm to inches in my hand in real time with out having to Google to figure the metric system with our inches system. Plus the fish scaler is like a cheese fork and a non disposable coffee stirring device that does not contribute to landfill. I do have the CyberTool 34 M & when I carry it with my Swiss Champion Plus I have almost all the tools of the Swiss Champ XLT but in two hand friendlier packages. I carry them together snugly on a 2 inch wide sheath on my belt. Then I can add my Alox Harvester and my Minnie Champ I am ready for just about anything.

Excellant video i have just bought this same one i did not know it had a little needle pin near the cork screw so i had a look to see if i had one and when i pulled it out i felt elated dont know why they decided to put a pin instead of a sewing needle it would have made more sense i am very happy with my new pocket tool thanks for the upload

You can fit a few sewing needles in the same slot as the toothpick. They can get stuck sometimes though.

I love my Swisschamp! You missed some tools... The pointy end of the lime it's, according to Victorinox, a nail cleaner. And one of the edges it's a metal saw. The inner part of the pliers it's to set the metal connectors at the end of the wires (I don't have a clue if they have and specific name, sorry). If you had a Swisschamp as a child probably it wasn't exactly like this. About 1998, or so, they changed the magnifier. The one in the video it's fully transparent plastic and X5, the old one was grey plastic around and the lens a little bit smaller, but in glass and X8. The main use that I give to the multipurpose hook it's to write... I mind, you open it, put the pen in the gap and close it again. This clamps the pen and it's easier to hold it to write. By the way... You can buy spares for the toothpick and the pin. And you can change the ring to hang it for the smaller one for the Classic or Minichamp (the smaller sister of Swisschamp that I always carry with me) and then avoid to get it stuck when you close some tools.

This swisschamp with it’s dimensions is a bit funny for me and the tools are mostly not needed. BUT i EDC carry instead a Leatherman Wave and a Vic Huntsman or Spartan and they are the best combination for me. Box opening, cardboard cutting, ziptie cutting, plastic tube cutting, breaking off the sharp edges of plastic and metal, wire cutting and stripping, and i need screwdriver very often. With this set i was able many many times to save the day. 😊

The File is actually half way decent on Metal I have used them over the years to smooth out edges touch up Axes and Machetes..Once when I was driving Over the Road I cut a 1/4 inch Bolt to get a shorter length for a Roadside Repair

Buy a 6mm square by 6mm hex adapter on Amazon and use your phillips screwdriver (or cap lifter) as the shank. I learned this 'trick' from Nikos Doulas NikGyver! :) To be fair to the Surge, it has much bigger pliers, so this is the main reason why it has the bigger size. If someone needs bigger pliers on a daily basis, they will go Surge for that reason. That's why they should not be compared.
