What I like about your review is that by the looks of your tools you actually use them. I've seen reviews with immaculate SAKs which I know haven't been carried for long or seen much use. People sometimes say some tools are "useless" but haven't carried them enough to find uses for them, they only see the more obvious uses and make assumptions. For eg the corkscrew (for people who don't drink wine) or the nail file which is a really useful tool besides grooming. Or say that the blade steel is not good enough in comparison with their also immaculate expensive knives that also haven't seen much use. Your SAKs look the way they should, actually users and beaters. Once they're too old just replace them. But to be honest, even using and abusing those knives, when are they actually old? I have SAKs that are over 20 years old and I've taken them fishing, camping, traveling, on a sheath, on my pocket, on a bag, they've seen dirt and salt water and they're still absolutely fine. The scratches and burns on the scale are battle scars that give them character. My favorite tools in the world.

Awesome review! Just one correction though, Victorinox does not glue the scales on. They are pressed on and are able to be popped off and changed if needed. Thanks for the great review sir!

I have a bunch of SAK, I love them because they are so darn useful. I work in a hospital and use the them all the time. I have been carrying a SAK for over 30 plus years and the tinker is my favorite model also.

I've carried a succession of Tinkers for about 40 years. I've abused a few of them horribly, but I've never had one rust and never broken one. To my mind, it's the best multitool ever made. By anybody.

I have a Tinker that I've done the same grind on the small blade (after acquiring the same whittling book). I've had several SAKs over the years and this one is a favorite. I recently purchased a Spartan model since the can opener blade already doubles as a makeshift phillips. That way I have the corkscrew as a place to store the tiny eyeglass screwdriver and to use as a way of getting paracord knots out. Nice review!

Great review, really like the modification on the small spear blade. Since I don't whittle, I use it for tasks that are kind of hard on the blade, such as cleaning battery terminals or scraping gaskets off of thermostat housings. It's like a beater blade. I keep the larger sharp for the tasks that require a sharp blade. These knives are so versatile. Having three daughters I was always fixing toys or changing batteries. Every time they ran into a problem, they would come to me to make it right. The Tinker never failed. Some folks wonder why people carry a knife, these are the ones that come to people like us when there is a problem to fix. Thank you for the review.

They are basically standard safety pins with a flat head on top. Victorinox sells them through ebay vendors etc.
@SaratogaontheAT4 ай бұрын
There is 1 other tool you are missing on your tinker. It is the "safety pin." Open the Phillips screwdriver. Look down at the point of rotation at the hinge. Located in the plastic scale is a pin hole. That is the storage area for the safety pin. When you close the screwdriver that prevents the safety pin from falling out. It's very useful.
@joecalton14493 ай бұрын
thanks I did not know about that. my most carried tinker does not have that hole, but a couple of the newer ones that I have do. so now to find some pins to fit in there.

I have one..It has more stories behind it than just about anything I own. It's been pretty well beat up, but I stick it in my pocket from time to time, because I know it will still do anything I need it to do. That's the best review I can write.

Agreed the screwdriver should possibly open the other direction which would work fine but reasonable torque

I really like the SAK Tinker, I have been carrying one since I was a kid. I have been carrying a Super Tinker lately, I really like the fact it has scissors.
@michaelcolloton69716 жыл бұрын
I've been carrying a Tinker for at least 30 years. I ordered my first Super Tinker last week. Oddly enough, it showed up today. I had a Classic few years ago and I was amazed at how often I used the scissors. Add some scissors to one of the greatest knives ever made and you have something really special.

Great review. I learned many things today. I've personally been carrying Victorinox knives since 1995 and I've never twisted the bottom of the Phillips head screwdriver or heard of someone who's done it. Maybe you put too much torque when it happened with you? Anyway, I guess every tool, no matter how big or small, has its own limits. Isn't that right?

Great video on a great knife. Thanks for sharing! On that knife that you snapped the Phillips off of.... I've heard you can send it back to Vic with a five dollar check for postage and they'll fix it for you.... Thanks again, have a great one!

I have a couple of those and I really like it think I may try that regrind. my most used one isn't that far off as it is just from sharpening.
@joecalton14497 жыл бұрын
it is a pretty handy regrind. I just looked and the book I got it from is "the little book of whittling" by Chris lubkemann. not only does it make for a better whittling blade but it puts the point in a better spot for taking out splinters, cutting articles and cupons and such also.

I thought the Tinker was the essential SAK until I discovered the Tinker Deluxe. I like having scissors and pliers. I pack one in my EDC bag. I have since moved up to a Leatherman Juice for a better pair of pliers.

I never thought to sharpen the tweezers. Genius! What part do you sharpen? Outer or inner?
@michaelcolloton69713 жыл бұрын
Most people seem to grind the outside. I only did it once and it didn't seem to make much difference. The tweezers are crap, no matter what you do to them. I'll bet I haven't used them 10 times in 40 years.

Been using a tinker for 20years or better, I prefer the small tinker. The lanyard ring kept poking a hole in my pocket so I ground it off too.

I can't decide if I like the tinkerer or the hiker more. The hiker has everything the tinkerer does along with a saw.
@joecalton14494 жыл бұрын
for me, I like the thin package of the tinker, the hiker is nice, but a bit too thick to rest comfortably next to my wallet in my back pocket. but if I used a saw a lot, then I think id like the hiker more :}

@@joecalton1449 Can you take this comment back please how are you getting on with the new hiker 😀🤔 ? @@name5949 take what coment back? the hiker is doing ok. im not using the saw as much as I thought I would, but it does have a nice square spine that is good for some scrapeing occasionally, yet it sits below the handle which is nice.

C amber I have as well. Love to see how a skilled knife maker evaluates the knives he carries. Good mods too, never thought to sharpen the tweezer. Serious use on these. I do like the Tinkerer, but oddly prefer the Camper- same basic knife but with a corkscrew, but only because it carries a mini screwdriver for tightening eyeglass screws.
@CamberLucyBella7 жыл бұрын
Chad234 I think that's the part I enjoy the most: seeing just how much he does use them and for what. the Santa pencils were really neat.
@chadengelhardt58097 жыл бұрын
Yes, neat whittling projects, nice to see the other aspects of Joe's craftsmanship and no surprise they line up with his knife making skills.
@joecalton14497 жыл бұрын
thanks fellas! there isn't near the wear on this knife as my benhmade or belt knife, as I almost see these as being a multitool more than a knife, and it takes longer to get this out of my pocket to use than either a belt knife or one with a pocket clip.
@joecalton14497 жыл бұрын
those santa pencils are pretty quick to make, and usually a big hit with kids. I got the idea from a carving magazine, and made a couple for my boy. he took one to grade school and one of his friends wanted one. next thing you know all the kids wanted them. next thing I knew, I was making several boxes of 24 pencils a year, and for the rest of his grade school years I made them every year. I haven't made them for a couple years now as he is almost in highschool, and way too old for them.

some tools on vitorinox are to small to be useful like the sizor or the pliers or the wood saw
@bohnert753 жыл бұрын
@@darkphotographer i would say no. The pliers on the Victorinox knives works well for its size, sure its no full size tool. The scissors of Victorinox are one of the best scissors from all Multitoolknives. The woodsaw works well if you know how to use. There you have to know its a pull+push saw. The only useless tool at Vic' knives is imo the parcelhook.

sure, I like either 3-1 oil, or rem oil most of the time. either every time you sharpen it, or when it feels like it needs some.

I find the tweezers are already too sharp. they cut the splinter at the surface o f skin sometimes and makes it even harder to remove it.

In the 40 years I've been carrying various SAK's, I've used the tweezers maybe 10 times. Maybe 5.successfully.
