Sorry, is it possible, that not every knife is designed for your special tasks??🤣🤣 In my opinion, the market is saturated with very stable, almost indestructible knife blades for Rambos like you. But there is a reason why this knives are so stable. These knives are so stable because the cross section geometry behind the cutting edge quickly increases in strength. A sturdy, indestructible knife is certainly cool, but it has the disadvantage that the performance for cutting and carving tasks is worse. I and Victorinox had the opinion, that we dont want do the same thing as all the other knife companies. With the Venture we tried to address a different customer segment. These are the people who want a knife, which is designt for what a knife primarily should be suitable for.. cutting and carving. Splitting, prying and chopping are not the tasks the Venture is designed for. I don't know how you got the stupid idea that this should be a survival knife. A knife connoisseur should quick notice that this cannot be a survival knife because of its low weight. By the way, grinding off so much material... it's expensive... no company does that simply for fun. There is a concept behind it. The venture has a thickness of 0.4 mm behind the cutting edge. That is extremely thin! On the other hand, the displacement of wood during carving is low and it penetrates the wood more easily. Your test was like testing a Ferrari on his off-road capabilities and after you say: " Don't buy it, this Ferrari is totally bullshit!" Actually, I'm proud of the knife because the knife started broke at this point, when you started with the brainless part of your test. Up to and including the chopping hardwood, the knife was stable enough. My conclusion: It is okay, if you don't like the knife but it annoys me that you as a "knife expert" didn't realize what this knife is made for. For that you don't need a lot of knife knowledge... just a spark would be enough...

If you are a kind of person who like to spread negativity and hate, you can take this knife and you can abuse it with insane tasks it's obviously not designed for, you can say 7000 times "Fuck" into the camera and you can tell to your viewers that this is the worst knife you ever held in your hand. Or you can switch on our brain, and say that this knife is useless for destrying a car but because of the fine geometrie you can may be fillet a fish or carve a spoon. The stability of the handle material is impressive! Four shots from the Glock to finally get a look inside. I am pleasantly surprised that the tang is larger than expected. I also wouldn't have thought that the small carving knife would punch holes in the sheet metal so confidently. And I had feared that the thin tip would already break off during battoning, which it didn't do. I'm going against public opinion here and call the Venture's performance quite decent. Victorinox calls it an outdoor and Bushcraft knife and not a survival knife. You also have to consider the geometry, it's rather thin, has a full flat grind and is stainless, which is like the worst combination possible for toughness but very nice for crafting, cutting, and food prep.

@highplains77773 ай бұрын
Hmmm...14C28N is a tough steel, up there with carbon steels like 80CRV2 and 52100. I say the heat treat was suboptimal, but your points about geometry and intended purpose are correct I believe. If you look at the grain structure of the broken blade, it looks a little rough to me, like maybe they soaked it too long during heat treatment. I am specifically referring to @21:37.
@vibeslide3 ай бұрын
@@highplains7777 I'm not an expert of and therefore not able to give a qualified comment on the grain structure. What I do know is, based on roughly 30 years of using and abusing knives, that full flats are by far the most utilitarian and best for everything except woodwork and batoning, but also the ones that break the easiest.
@druids843 ай бұрын
Awesome review, thanks Joe X! Indeed, marketing it as a "bush survival" knife in their official knife description is a bit too far of a stretch. Even the designer (awesome guy) admitted that the edge grind has been chosen very thin (0.3-0.4mm) so that this knife would be extremely good at cutting and slicing, so you compromise on ruggedness. Combine that with the fact that they tempered the Sandvik 14C28N to very high hardness, and you get thinly ground, brittle knife. But I was actually surprised that it even got through the log battoning, as other reviewers have had the edge roll even on hard use against wood. Overall - a good camp/companion knife, assuming you have another hard-use tool with you - at least a hatchet or a 6-8"+ knife. If someone absolutely hates Scandi grinds, then this knife would be an OK alternative in lightweight hiking/camping, if you need to count each gram of gear. But as you said - you pay more and get less durability than the Mora Companion HD.

those who read original manufacturer data clearly have an advantage: the producing company and the designer emphasize the benefits of a sharp cutting tool for camping, hiking and KITCHEN use. look it up on the manufacturerers page, there is a manual to the knife. This knife ist NOT designed as a "survival" knife. so i don't understand the critics on it not being one. as i can see from your awesome tests, it works well on wood, it doesn't break on the first brick hit, so it will survive falling down on a rock, that is enough for my uses of a camp-kitchen knife. unlike other knives you brought beyoung their limits. thank you for your work showing us the limits.

I banged the spines of the stainless Garberg and a companion together, to see if the Garberg steel is really stronger. The garberg got dents and the companion was fine. While the carbon steel Garberg arrived in perfect condition. I once thought I arrived at a knot in a piece of wood. So I got a bigger baton. I'd bet there are more old school hunters who have actually been in real survival situations and didn't even acknowledge it, as opposed to all the " knife - boy survivalists " of today. The youngsters of today must stay within cell service range and be able to play Halo in their $19.99 Walmart tents.

I agree that Joe X tests are very extreme and don't really mirror real-world usage for bushcraft and survival, however, they really show IMO the structural stability and endurance. I have many knives, cheap and expensive, from small manufacturers and larger ones. I use these often on survival and bushcraft adventures on a regular basis. I have been shocked at times how a knife with "super steel " and costs 250 euros breaks out when a cheaper knife with "standard steel" doesn't. And yes, sorry, a knife should be able to baton a little if required (not extreme, though) and be able to be used for prying, if it is marketed as a survival knife. Otherwise, it is just a camp chore and food prep knife. I was considering buying this victorinox some months ago but decided that it is not just the right knife for my usage or requirements. It's not a bad knife (not perfect, though), although i find a bit expensive and has many innovative features, but it needs to be marketed with a more honest description. I think Joe X's videos are very entertaining and does show at to what level a knife is capable of in stress tests. I see them as a kind of scale for the toughness and durability of a knife. Every knife will fail eventually, but the question is when and how. @Felix - don't get stressed, and don't take it personally. Just market your"knife" for what it really is and be happy with it (lowering the price would be also not a bad idea). @Joe X - keep up the entertaining videos, they are funny as hell. It might cut a load of salami and cheese for lunch, but really shouldn't be described for anything more. Even a survival expert would struggle to get enough work out of it in a survival situation. The real insult is the price of it. It's this kind of stupidity that will give Victorinox a bad name. Why do it? As an Anglo Swiss this knife annoys me, not because of the knife but its description. A Tereva 120 is a Bushcraft/Survival knife, which even Victorinox could make. Buy a Victorinox Huntsman for half the price, as it is a far better "survival tool". Joe X , your test was too late for me, I have allready bought one. If I have seen your test before I would have saved 70€.

You can't deny the brilliance of Victorinox SAKs. I have a Huntsman that my Oma gifted me in the early 90's still going strong. But JoeX exposed this knife which is overpriced and not fit for purpose as a survival knife. I knew the outcome would be this.

Unbelievable 😢... If I was norm about this model, now its a little problem: Felix Immler, the constructor, is my old good friend. So, I can say, he made it for the bushcraft only. I was sure, it won't be long, but I hope, he will understand it right.

@@Ve-suvius I'll never write no shit about Felix. If I need his help, I know, where I can find him. Basically, I am neutral and peaceful guy, so better to be more patient about things. One week ago my dad punched his wheel, and my Vics Spartan was unable to help. So I took my old good Recon Tanto 😎. I was on Joe's side, when he had some troubles, but now I found my 2 friends are fighting... "Beat it, beat it, no one wants to be defeated!
