Just after the U.S. entered World War II, the Japanese conquered the Commonwealth of the Philippines, an American protectorate, occupying its people. But they still hope, and during January 1945, these were answered as much of the Philippines Islands were liberated and its people cheered the Americans. Their liberation became bloody as they fought their way in Manila, but still they cheered. A touching tribute to the will of the Philippine people to survive as they waited for liberation -- and their eventual independence a year later.

Thank you for uploading this episode of Victory at Sea. I first came to know Victory at Sea in the Fall of 1952 when I was 9 years old. I love the writing and narration by Leonard Graves, but most of all I love the music. For me, it has always been the music. This is one of my favorite episodes, not necessarily for the story, but indeed for the music. Until I found this posting an important part of the score was almost always missing in Return of the Allies, and that was because Republic Pictures cut it out to insert a TV commercial. Republic Pictures' attempts at selling Victory at Sea on TV made episodes jumpy, skipping past many precious parts of the music, but here, thanks to the Nuclear Vault, we have COMPLETE episodes, including my long sought missing 3 minutes that begins with Leonard Graves saying, "Striking from confined waters..." It begins @ the 8:48 minute mark. I like to think that this scene in Victory at Sea was the inspiration for composer John Williams' music in the "Tie-fighter attack" in George Lucas' original "Star Wars." In both "Return of the Allies" and the Tie-fighter attack, music reaches an exciting climax in the attack. In Victory at Sea, however, rather than sound effects, Robert Russel Bennett cleverly uses a staccato rat--Ta--tat of trumpets as US Navy carrier planes fire their .50 Cal. machine-guns. Unfortunately, George Lucas cut out this similar musical climax when the original "Star Wars" became Episode 4, "A New Hope." I was disappointed when I saw the new release. Lucas had done to "Star Wars" what Republic Pictures had done to Victory at Sea. Some folks just can't resist messing with a masterpiece.

The Daddy of all WW2 documentaries. Shown in Britain about 1954 for the first time. That famous intro --and music, was fantastic. With the episode 'Under the Southern Cross' a very well known theme emerges, reconisable to most people over 6o yrs old, it later had words added, and became a world-wide hit--''No other Love have I''. Obviously, told through the American experience , mainly in the Pacific, they had a inexaustable supply of film , so every aspect is well documented.

15:03 That's the Pangasinan Provincial Capitol, severely damaged, rebuilt a few years later. I wish that were so, but it isn't true. China closed off the fishing grounds that the Philippines need to feed thier people. When they appealed to their supposed allies, the Obama administration ignored them. End result is they had to surrender to all Chinese demands, or watch their people starve and die.

@Gerald Rice Many Filipinos are in fact, Muslim. It's more to do with the Philippines not having oil, or anything politically useful to the US, or to it's citizens. It's just a question of when China will not tolerate the US's interference in what amounts to its domain.

@@she5152 Not worse than Trump is doing to the Saudis currently. Oh how embarrassing! Anything for cheap oil, how does it feel to be bought off that cheaply? For the Philippines, it was surrender or starve, for the US it was give up the weekend trip to the mall (God forbid) or stand up against international political assassination...lets see which the US chose. Yeah, honor or friendship means nothing to the US, but really who is surprised anymore?

The last time the USA declared war as it is supposed to Constitutionally and the whole nation got together to win the war and our nation's morals had not yet degenerated or turned it's back on God, like it is doing today. We respected our flag & our leaders & our nation. Proverbs 14:34: "Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." The reproach (i.e., disgrace and shame) openly being manifested in America today is indicative of the fact that we are quickly becoming a nation without God. Frankly, what this means is that the continued existence of this country is at stake. It may be that God usually judges individuals at the end of time, but the Bible clearly teaches that He judges nations in time. In Romans 1, the apostle Paul gives the four step decline in the history of the nation that forgets God: A nation rejects God, it turns to false religion, it becomes bogged down in immorality and violence, and then God judges it. Consequently, a nation without God is a nation in serious trouble.

I wonder if people know that it was rumored, by his own people, that Emperor Hirohito was a full-blown homosexual? With an affinity for having sex with his favorite white horse even? hmmmm......I wonder if they would have idolized him sooo much if that information had really gotten out!

Hirohito was married and had a wife. There are numerous Newsreels showing them greeting Japanese citizens who, before the war, were not allowed, under threat of death, to look upon him. He was believed to be the 125th descendant of the Sun God. A veritable living God! The Japanese government refused to surrender unless he remained as Emperor. This was after two Atomic Bombs and the fire-bombing of Tokyo with Napalm. Truman relented only after Mac Arthur said he would handle the Emperor. On his first meeting with General Mac Arthur, behind closed doors, before appearing in front of reporters, his hands shook like a leaf, and Mac Arthur had to light his cigarette. In order to embarrass Hirohito, Mac posed for pictures with the Emperor without his tie on and was criticized by the Japanese Press as a sign of disrespect. Later on Hirohito and his wife go on a Rock Tour by train traveling throughout the Japanese nation with Mac Arthur which gets wide publicity. The Emperor stops at many cities, allows the common people to look upon him and converse with him. He tells Japan that General Mac Arthur will help the people and rebuild Japan, which is exactly what Mac Arthur did! Thank You
