THE most exciting horse race I've ever witnessed. A roaring crowd until they hit the line, at which point you could have heard a pin drop. The aptly named Victory Gallop by a head bob and a nostril!

"History, in the waiting!" I remember watching this on tv & literally bouncing off the walls with excitement (I was 11)! This is the closest we've come in 33 years! I really hope we get a Triple Crown winner soon!

"Victory Gallop, a final surge...It's going to be very close...Here's the wire...IT'S TOO CLOSE TO CALL!!!!! Was it Real Quiet, or was it Victory Gallop?!?!" Haha..that part always make me smile..Out of all the Belmont Stakes races I've seen, the first dramatic runs I've seen, other than the 2012 Belmont, this race tops the list. This was racing AT IT'S BEST.

Watch this about 4x a year at least. Still remember 12 year old me in the grandstand at Belmont heartbroken after the results were posted.

I remember watching this race live and crying, "No, no, too soon!" when Desormeaux sent Real Quiet on the backstretch.

I still feel bad for Kent. I called in sick to work to go to Laurel on the day he tied & broke the record for wins in a season in ‘89. I bought a $2 win ticket for every race he rode & got him to autograph the tying record race ticket & the record breaking race ticket. It was a lousy day weather wise but a day I will always remember.

In ultra slow-mo I see that Real Quiet lost his lead about 6 feet from the wire (and regained the lead a second later)

This is a million times better than Dave Johnson’s call.
@BimboBrunch Жыл бұрын
Yes, but Dave Johnson's call has the audio of Desormeaux and he was miked up and it is exhilarating listening to him desperately chirp. I wish you could combine the two and have Durkin's call with the NBC audio of Desormeaux being miked up because that would be the best experience in the history of horse race watching.

The longest and hardest race to win of the Triple Crown with the exception of Secretariat a lot of horses came into this race needing it to become a Triple Crown winner and have gone home with their owner ,trainer , and jockey heartbroken as you’ve just witnessed. Personally I think Kent Desormeaux did all he could to win the race except shorten the stretch by twenty five feet . D Wayne Lucas with all the horses he trained never saddled a Triple Crown winner, he’s won the Triple Crown with two different horses ,Thunder Gulch and Timber Country also he has won fourteen Triple Crown races , and ten million Breeders Cup races .

Watching this race now.. a lot different since AP, still heartbreaking close though DQ or not. Was rooting for RQ to win of course and still painful to see him come up short. Still you want to see a Triple Crown winner look like one and not just be holding on for dear life like Real Quiet was doing. Smarty Jones, Silver Charm, Afleet Alex, Charismatic, Spectacular Bid and even Barbaro all so close to doing it.. if only. Big Brown was the only time I didn't want to see it happen.

with a finish like that if Real Quiet moved too soon it was less than a 1/10 of a second to soon

I like Dullahan as well, but that polytrack preference somewhat scares me.
If the race was 1 foot shorter RQ would have won. If the race was 1 foot loner RQ would have won the race. that's the pain of losing the triple crown by a head bob,
@profsdottir9 жыл бұрын
+michael del zitti , check out the head on. The stewards would've taken down RQ (and they said so at the time) if his nose had been in front. He came out twice on VG in the stretch, making contact the second time. Too bad, but VG won fair and square.

Real Quiet came out & interfered w/ the winner in the stretch, anyway. They would have had to DQ him had he won, so better he didn't.

You’ll never see a disqualification in a race of that magnitude, I didn’t see any contact .
