European pilots should be very concerned about getting enough practise on their tail dragger warbirds! There were a couple of landings particular the hurricane , which clearly indicated insufficient training in flying at proper approach speeds. This approach with all its obstacles is a demanding approach in which the skills of a pilot unmistakingly will come to light. The DC3 captain standing out by showing how it’s done by a true pro! Those airplanes are a unique unreplacable historical treasure and they deserve to be treated as such with the utmost care. Despite the high fuel and maintenance cost, we need to make sure their pilots acquire sufficient flying time to be able to maintain the required skills to fly them safely. A well known test pilot once said: any airplane aims at killing you, you need to learn how to stop it from doing so!
@richardcarnahan51843 жыл бұрын
Can't tell for sure but it seems there's a slight downhill grade to this somewhat bumpy runway. If so, I give all a passing grade on their landings. I didn't see any that were dangerous or liable to cause damage. Those few who greased their landings deserve a special round of applause. Watch the old newsreels of WW2 fighters returning home on grass airfields. You will see the same mix of results.

There were a few who nailed it. The P-47 weight helps plant it on sod. The P-47 weight without ordnance is around 10,000 pounds and the P-51D is lighter at around 7,600 pounds.

Wasn't that a P-40 painted as a Me-109? I'm pretty sure that was one of the ones they used for The Tuskagee Airmen movie. They used painted P-40's as 109's.
