The acting was superb. The storytelling, everything. It is such a small vignette of what classism really is. The fake feminism, the corporate feminism, the "let others pay for your actions", all this. My niece got caught stealing alongside her friends who were all rich and born into privilege because she felt peer pressured to do so.
@hxneycakes9 күн бұрын
I usually don't like films like this because of the unrealistic depiction of common teasing/passive bullying, but honestly, as a 'new kid' who commonly finds herself in situations like Viola found herself here, I relate so much more than I ever thought I would. Even the girls' mannerisms while gossiping in the bathroom are so familiar to me and though I appreciate its realness, I still do get mad, which is amazing. I recognize those words and phrases way too well for my own good. Huge kudos for this.

This simply depicts the reality that environment could really change someone's behavior. It could really shape the way they think and act like one of them. It's important to consider the people whom we are hanging out with and what their intention could be. And for a person that doesn't have to change oneself just to get in or to fit in with the people who surrounds them and as well as you don't have to dump older and kinder friends just because you have new one and at the end of the day, they'll leave you and you got you. Find the right circle, find the right friends.

This reminds me of the time when i was send to a specifically elite russian class (because i had a 1st world country background and the principal thought it fitted me) Everyone was chronically online because that had more life than their everyday lives. The pictures they took had to look in goofy angles w a 0.6/0.5 camera zoom, everyone wore watered down baggy y2k clothes (if they had enough money for the social status) and the boys always had these blue, tight uniforms and played brawl stars (it was weird if you didn't). The gap between genders was huge. They also glazed the 2000's american style, and anything western which was weird considering the nationalism and xenophobia. Appearance was what mattered the most, your nails, your hair, your clothes - it's like they assumed they knew you by it because that's all you were to them. The bullying was like something straight out of a movie. I got greeted by girls walking up to me on my first day at lunch and being impressed by my phone's language being english. They "warned" me about who to avoid, because they had pre-established categories for everyone. When i asked someone if we were friends, she dead ass said that they need to find out were i belonged first,,,, The thing that was the most unsettling however, is how the whole school bullied this one girl because of her telegram channel. She didn't post anything even slightly shocking, the main spotlight was on her seriously using emojis and posting things like "im listening to ariana grande *peace sign*" which they found peak cringe And when i tell the whole school, i mean the whole school bullied her. Her channel gained 127 subscribers from 10 in one hour and the hallways were full of people surrounding her, asking for signatures and pictures, sarcastically bullying her by treating her as if shes famous and then posting that picture in their channel. The rich girls added me to all the channels but there was one that stood out. It was a channel about "school events" which was ran by two almost graduating bsf's (in the "popular" circle). They posted random pictures of the disabled kids, stupid drawings and inside jokes. It was the main school information source My (what i thought friend) literally laughed at another girl in front of me because she "looked funny" (she meant dark skin and explicitly clarified it) The whole school was just stuck in their own bubble, they were so terribly emotionally immature to the point that they couldn't even see anything wrong with anything they did let alone think about it. "Yeah, we joke about everyone, but it's light-hearted"

i think this a pretty superficial portrayal of what elite schools look like in singapore?? like what's with the american accents/ over the top feminist portrayals/ pilates references?? the tampon scene doesn't make sense? the stealing clothes? and the whole NSK thing-- like since when has that been a term anywhere.? if you wanted to tackle issues of elitism there were a lot of nuances that were missed and this was a pretty damn unrealistic take. it was a bit too inspired by american high school dramas? and i also get that the "viola's world" "viola texting" with the gamey synthy sounds was an artistic choice but i don't feel like it served any substantial purpose for the film as a whole great cinematography though that was probably the one thing i enjoyed

Bullying by peers is not the only problem. The way teachers scream even when students make trivial mistakes that is also a big problem especially if an undiagnosed autistic student studies in the school. I am not talking about their prank on the teacher but irl many teachers just treat students like emotional punchbags and toys to abuse. Shaming, blaming, hypocrisy, heirarchy, humiliation, and lacking empathy, humanity, morality, emotional maturity is a crime; not making mistakes or being imperfect. You cannot treat students like criminals and expect them to not become one. Lead by example. They will never trust you, never pay attention, never learn anything good from you if you make them feel constantly on edge and unsafe, intimidated or in danger and if you don't prove that you're humane. For every self-deceptive, self-righteous doomed pereon who was once an abusive teacher, parent or an abusive peer/sibling: Don't make the universe regret by making you a human or even letting you exist. Don't be a Satan like burden on this earth: with this behaviour you are a blot on the word 'human' 'teacher' 'student'. You're nothing but an insecure envious landfill. Without cleaning your mind, intentions, perspective, behaviour, mentality and without correcting yourself, you can't grow. Faking it will not make it. Truth is truth and the only thing you can do is acknowledge it, focus on your own actions and change yourself instead of intending harm or always resenting others. Focus on your actions if you don't wanna destroy yourself because focusing on others makes one fall down. If you choose to be good today, you cannot be defined by your past but yes you will always be held accountable for it but it will lose the power to define you. We cannot grow if we refuse to acknowledge and correct our mistakes. _Each person can only grow by taking accountability because no one is sinless._

Idk why but i feel like this video also shows how different the world of two people can be just because of their financial status and still have problem with it. As viola belongs from a poor family she is deprived from so many things like she loves swimming but can not afford to go to swimming class. She doesn't have the advanced gadgets like other students in the school, sge doesn't have money to afford high end brand clothing. In her eyes her life is total misery. On the other hand, Eve's family owns a big business, she have so many helpers, she goes to expensive vacation and jer family will soon tell her to overtake their business. its what's going on inside her mind in those times eg; when her mother first gives her $15, she is happy and is no longer upset. like the way children would suddenly see their parents in a better light after an argument because they would offer to buy them mcdonalds or something. the second segment is when both viola and eve were exempted from pe class. In her head, viola saw eve as an ally, because both of them had to be exempted & she naively thought they could both bond over it

At the part where the two girls noticed Viola’s skirt was purple, it made me remember when I called out my friend having a purple sweater. She said it was navy blue, not purple. I honestly feel a little bad for calling out now (she doesn’t have mental health issues so I didn’t feel bad)
@Missy-in5nf3 күн бұрын
People having mental health problems should not be the only reason your nice to people. The fact you say this says so much about you.

2:49 I never really understood gossip. I hate people when they do that. And it’s not really because I have a really long history about people gossiping about me (I simply never cared) but it just says so much about a person. Like how boring they are to not have something to talk about themselves and have their noses all stuck up on other people’s business and for what? For those 4 mins of laughters
