Hi , Your video was Amazing! I need an Advice, I have an Amazon Violin and is super cheep , I am not a Violin maker, BUT I don't want the glanced color of the violin, I want it to look kind of old or hand-made , even though it was made in China prefabricated... soooo Do you think is a good Idea to use sandpaper on all the violin ? Or is it crazy?

Does it happen that a Violin Owner remove the original varnish and re-varnish his violin himself ? Can I buy a violin without varnish and do the varnish myself ? The reason I ask is that I want to experiment with home made thin varnish. Thank you.

To re varnish is hard, and you can easily damage your violin. And yes, you can buy white violin which is without varnish

Tery Wood Sr. Not by what is purely in this video. You will still need to prepare and varnish the wood. I've worked with unvarnished instruments in the past, and it is important to remove the fingerboard before prep/varnish . Get a good varnish, apply around 2 coats as a seal, sand with thin sand paper, and then use the video.

It will look very ugly in a few years. Graceful wear is only possible if the colour is distributed throughout the varnish. That way, as the varnish wears the colour goes gradually. This stuff will remain until the wear reaches the paint, which will then disappear entirely leaving an ugly pale patch with hard edges. Practically impossible for a restorer to retouch gracefully. I've retouched a lot of instruments, and I wouldn't want anything to do with this one.

This one is already painted. I have ordered diy violin and bought also some shellac granules do you know how can I make some texture on the back or rather just let it be? Or how to dye shellac, but just a bit If you know what I mean I enjoy craft works and violin.

This is how stradivari Made his violins. Why??? Cause. You wont over apply varnish to a violin. Remember. The more varnish you apply the less it sounds!!! Ignorant ppl will say this is done wrong

THIN THIN COATINGS! I USED DYE(ALCOHOL) STAINS INSTEAD OF PIGMENTS. I USED FOR 1ST COAT STRONG YELLOW,(LIKE CAUTION SIGNS ON ROAD) 2ND COLOR BROWN. 3RD COLOR RUBY RED. BETWEEN COLOR COATS, I USED A LAC BASE INSTRUMENT VYNAL- SEALER. MULTIPLE COATS, FINE SANDING BETWEEN COATS OF COLOR. SHADING, HIGHLIGHTING DONE AT THIS STAGE. INSTRUMENT LACQUER & FIDDLE IS FINISHED. FINAL THICKNESS, 1 ONION-SHEET OF TYPING PAPER. 24 YEARS AND COUNNTING!

Lots of overreacting, here. It's basically just the same as japanning, which was common even among famous makers from the mid 1800s onwards; A woodworking fad, of sorts, You find it on what today is considered "fine vintage" furniture and "heirloom" musical instruments alike. It's always interesting to see reactions to present-day applications of what was common practice back in the day. Apparently it was all right if Stradiwhozits of Cremona did it back in 1835 (yes, I know Stradivarius did his thing in the 1700s. It's a joke, son, you missed it), but let Yousef Gustibus in Hoboken do it today and he gets lynched online. Gotta love public perceptions.

+blackktieguy well, unlike you, it doesn't take me a damn year to reply to a comment. And the reason I would not buy a violin from you is, I have never really cared for a "showboat", you seem to be into it more for the drama instead of the love of the art.

+Lee Goins that right there is the lowest level a human can get, telling someone to kill themselves? I understand now your lack of wanting a beautiful instrument because someone as disgusting and ugly as you could never love anything or produce anything of worth to give the world. if you are so willing to say something like that to someone, I urge you strongly take my advice or if that is above you maybe it's better you take your own. let me know how that turns out.

Rubbish! You obviously haven't a clue about violin making and Cremonese/Italian techniques in general. They did not use paint, they used a very simple varnish, and if you don't believe me there is a document in Milan in Stradivari's own hand describing exactly what was used and often in very thick layers.
