Video #16: Our Barndominium ROOF TRUSSES Are Too BIG For The Crane?! (42ft!)

It's time to lift and lay the roof trusses on our modern style barndo house. It's a "Mondo" (modern barndo) with a single slope shed style roof, and we are using parallel cord trusses to maximize our use of space!
But at 42 feet long, our trusses are TOO BIG for our crane operator to lift!
With a bit of creativity, they come up with a solution to keep everyone safe AND get those trusses in place

Welcome to This Life We Live ( This 1 Life We Live ) formerly the WTFarm Girl channel.
Subscribe and follow along as we build our DREAM HOME after 10 long years of saving and waiting! It's a barndominium house plan with a shed style roof. It's a barndominium hybrid, so it's stick-built and on a basement because here in Michigan we get a LOT of tornadoes!
We'd LOVE to build it fully from the ground up, but sadly our local township only allowed us TWO YEARS to fully complete our home, so it's a race against time to try to get everything done BOTH with professional help AND on our own!
Building half of it on our own allows us a MASSIVE savings with our budget and makes this unique home design actually affordable!
We started with a low cost floor plan, to make this an affordable barndominium and learned how to save money on a house build.
We have some fantastic ways to save money on a new house and easy DIY home design tips!
This is going to be the coolest house on KZbin by the time it's complete!
If you have suggestions or ideas, we'd love to hear them!

Having the size of garage that you do adds to the massive size of your house. Put a 4 car garage on any house and it is going to feel massive.

@This1LifeWeLive I see it more as an exercise in perspectives. The house is a lesson on how we see things. Right now there are a lot of vertical lines. Vertical lines makes objects appear taller. It also has a lot of horizontal lines that of course build length into our view. Right now there isn't much to bridge those sight lines. As the trim and siding, the doors and windows with their own lines in the doors, including the garage doors, come into the design the way that your house is seen will change. This holds true for the interior as well. My background is in the mechanical side of things, mechanical engineering, mostly in the area of manufacturing. However my first love, and my strongest desire is Architecture and Architectural Engineering. I have designed, built and remodeled serval buildings. I was able to work in a unique arena of Architecture for over 7 years: Air Supported Structures and Tensile Structures. A very challenging and rewarding industry. I say that not to toot my horn. I share that so that you can see that I'm not spouting a bunch of hot air.

Great video of the house Suzanne, I'm just glad none of the construction workers got hurt, sometimes it takes a little longer than expected to have the work done but they wear doing the job right, you don't always want to rush it either

Good job, they are up and nobody got hurt. With your overhang angled up, it looks good. If it angled down, more overhang would help shade your walls from the elements.

You know, when Erik first saw the idea on a home plan site, we liked it because it was different . . . but NOW, it's the TREND out here! Almost all of the custom homes we have come across being being built right now, ARE the same single-slope design! within 10 miles we counted 5 including ours :O

You seem to have a lot of space above the garage. Is that by design? Are you going to put a loft up there or storage. If not a window for natural light would be good. It just seem like you need something to break up the wall above the garage doors
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive Ай бұрын
When Erik originally designed the plan, we had wanted a future loft in it to look over his Charger. But, partway through he got an offer on his car and decided to sell it. But he DOES want to put a stacker in there or a car lift, so the extra height will help with that. I had tried to talk him into a window too, but he didn't want one :P The garage doors will have some windows in them most likely, and we are planning eyebrows above the garage :)

Fake dog poop? Suzanne, it isn't nice to mess with your contractors!!!! You know how hard it is to get a good contractor ;) No safety harnesses, no net, made me nervous!!! Looks like the Crane Guy took your sand trap in stride. Do you maybe need some angle bracing between the floor joists to firm them up?
@ruralridez6165

I installed lateral 2x6 bracing where the truss engineers laid them out. There is a support wall running down the middle there is only a 17ft unsupported span.

I still can not figure out why so big? Kids move out in such a short time and then your left with a huge house and can not take care of it because of age or work stress, many factors that I myself got fooled into thinking I needed. A one man show but three bedrooms, two full baths, laundry rooms times two, a secure room, my gun room, and then a three car garage. I only had one rig, a old pickup. I was a mechanic so guess what rig needed work but never got it. I know about how high taxes are on homes and then the insurance too. Damn Susan, you will be subletting out rooms to keep it clean. Wishing you kids the best, I kind of been busy watching the political arena. Since Kamala has had three years of running this phony government, I just hope she doesn't get to add the title of first woman president along with her tampon timmy, a true communist for sure.

I do agree that I wouldn't want Kamila to be our first female president. Lots of democratic women I'd take over her. Heck maybe even Polowsi as much as I can't stand her. I feel like Kamila represents too many bad stereotypes of women . . . I understand your viewpoint on the house too. WE really sat down and tried to plan long term for this thing. All of my family had full size houses as retirees, and as a kid I remember always having a place to sleep and play. That's what we are thinking long term, and even our adult kids when they came over to see the build, suggested having Sunday dinners here every week now that "we have the space". So long term, it will be a gathering place for family, and with the tree farm running it will be busy much of the time. It's set-up with extra emphasis on entertaining, so only 2 bedrooms.

Me and my ex 2 hours tops to set and brace .but I'm a master been doing since 89 monster mansions and you never yell at crane guy one guy gives hand signals . Those little thingsI would have prepared 8at a time bracing done . Makes me smile .also if you had spacer cut out block made you slam that on it holds truss while you nail into top plate .and the beginning should have had few t-braces built to hold everything from the git
