Hi, I have the MacBook Pro m4 max base model on 14'' . I did Edin one video till now and it was a 4k 60fps 1 hour travel video. The m4 base model had no problem on ANY TASK. Lots of people told me to ho with 16" because of battery and performance but I don't see that a problem on 14".

! To all After Effects / Adobe Premiere editors thinking about buying a Macbook ! I currently use the MacBook Pro M4 with 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD, and the editing experience is amazing! Compared to my desktop, After Effects runs much more smoothly, even tho I edit heavy projects. I primarily work on manga animations, which involve multiple PSD (Photoshop project files) layers, complex composition (color correction, light, particles, etc) and the performance is amazing. Rendering is super fast, and I still haven't gotten any crashes, only when I edit for longer than 2 hours straight (minimum) while Safari is open After Effects starts pre-rendering way less time, tho this can be fixed just by reopening After Effects or changing the preview resolution. When compared to my desktop (Intel Core i5-9400F, 24GB RAM, Nvidia RTX 3060), the MacBook is way better in both speed and stability, making it a much better option for video editing.

I love your reviews! They are the most pragmatic and informative for me. I’m a 79-year-old videographer who shoots docs and some events. I’m not sure how much longer I will be working so how much money I spend on equipment is important. I have a Sony 7siii, an FX 3 and a Sony a7iii. My laptop is a 15” MacBook Pro 2012. I’m currently using a Mac Studio 32 RAM and 2TB SSD for storage. I’m also a photographer so I’m interested in editing my photographs in Lightroom on the go. Apple business folks are trying to convince me to spend $4,000 on their plan, but I think (for what I do which is minimal editing in Premiere) that the M4Pro with 24 RAM and 1 TB SSD will work for me. Any advice?

If you're wanting to stay on budget, I'd now look at refubished M2 Pro/M3 Pro 14" laptops. I have a 14" M3 Pro with 38gb of ram and 1tb ssd. It chews through just about everything until I am doing five layers of multicam 4K video, then I usually build proxies. I would say if you need more ram for the price, I'd go with an M2 Pro with more ram than an M3 Pro with less ram. In hindsight I wish I had more ram for those 10% of my edits but for my 90% single source 4K to 1080p delivery for my day job? Works fantastic

If it’s just H.265 4k with light effects I think even my MacBook Air M1 with 16GB of ram can do it Depends on what kind of crazy effects, multi cam etc you are doing I regularly edit 8k30p 400Mbps H.265 footage from the Nikon Z8 without too much problem on my M1 MacBook Air, but that’s about the limit. Never had issues with 4k

As I was looking up KZbin hit or miss wisdom on which MacPro M4 computer to purchase and make use of a trade-in for my M1, there is your human huggable smiling self. I didn't waste time on the other links regarding the same subject. What are your thoughts on keeping the monitor small and going for the M4 Max chip but in the 14", still bombing the RAM to 64 RAM which it seems my newer Resolve interface requires for intensive Mask or Magic Mask computing? Realizing and verifying, the monitor size seems to be the only difference between a price point of $3900 (14") to $4200 (16"), sans Nano. (?) Wait, adding a final note since I just saw in a Resolve Forum the suggestion "thermal throttling" is lessened with a 16". I just prefer the mobility of a 14" and why I'm inquiring, planning on using an external monitor when at home base.

glad this came out since I'm planning to get one of these m4s and your videos are always a great resource for comparisons. One thing you didn't mention that I've seen elsewhere is why you should get a 16" m4 max -- the extra heat dissipation is pretty crucial when getting to the loads you commonly throw at the m4 max, so from a thermal perspective you kind of have to go 16" for m4 max

You do, maybe I missed it but what I meant was I don’t think you mentioned *why* the m4 max chip should go hand in hand with the 16” (i.e. don’t get a 14” with m4 max) due to the the worse thermal regulation performance of the 14” which inhibits the performance if you’re really driving the m4 max hard. Get the M3 Max. I was stuck in the same spot, until I found a 14" 14-30c M3 Max, with 36GB/1TB for 150€ more than the M4 Pro 24GB/1TB 14" (2999€) That was a no brainier. Get the M3 Max, it's better than the M4 Pro even if you may not need the extra performance right now. As a rule of thumb I would always go with a previous gen top tier chip rather than a newer "mid" tier one.

I mean depends how soon you will make it. If editing films in 6k 8k and all that is gonna happen for you in 4-5 years then buy a m4 pro instead of max right now. If you are just editing 20-30 minut shorts in 2k - 4k, m4 pro will do for now. Smaller footage, I think even a regular m4 will do with 24gigs of ram. And i think at the base level a mac mini with an external screen will be cheaper for you. Either way I think you should buy for your budget and conditions right now because whatver machine yiu buy, it will easily be ok for 3-6 yeara

Can you make a video about why exported video colors don't look like they do in the program monitor. Even using the QT LUT. I've tried so many thing but nothing works. I contacted Adobe and they said to use VLC to play videos which does adjust the colors but still not what it looks like in the preview monitor. I opened 4 windows on the same monitor to see the difference in color and they were all different. I opened one on the default mac player, one on VLC player, one on the premiere preview monitor, and finally on youtube and they all looked different. So frustrating.

Don't use a LUT to change colours. Both QuickTime and vlc can alter the colours of an exported video file. Try using MPV player. What you see on KZbin should be the correct result

Thanks for this video. Great as ever. I am still on an M1 Pro from 2021 and it works fine for my needs so hard to justify changing yet. And no upgrade will make much difference to the fact Premiere Pro cannot play back video properly any more and adjusting graphics takes like 30 seconds for playback to happen every time!! Useless (oh and cannot properly differentiate and thus work independently between frame and audio sample scales!!) Grrr.

I don't shoot in prores but h265 and edit in premiere pro. M4 max has 2 decoder for pro res. Does that also help in h265 editing experience?

Yes the Max has 2 encoders and 2 decoders for h264/h265 and ProRes so it will be faster.

I have an NZXT PC with an i9 10900k, 3090, and 64GB ram. Gonna be switching to Mac. Tired of windows. I have an old 2018 MBP that isn’t usable for video editing. But I can’t see myself going with anything less than the M4 Max 16 CPU/40 GPU with 64 GB of ram. Is that overkill when compared to my PC specs? To be clear, that 3090 is a monster at rendering 4k videos. I use DaVinci, sometimes Dehancer as well.

For a little bit of context, I have a similar-ish 5900X/32GB/2080 desktop and got only a 16gb M1 Pro 14" a few years ago as a "mobile/backup" option but it ended up being my primary machine because it was actually faster in some tasks, at worst it was on par with it. I only wish I knew it would be more than a secondary as I would have gotten more RAM. Even the M4 Pro would definitely do you well IMO. I think the Max is overkill unless there's a lot of RAW video or heavy effects. My M1 handles Dehancer pretty well unless I have some of the more intense FX turned on, sure the M4 Pro would do a very good job with it.

Same choices, but it's around 700$ difference in Canada, and the Max has lower RAM :( Higher Max spec is adding 1200$ more. I think I might get the Pro and wait a bit longer for video export times lol.

Binned M4 Max runs cooler and quieter, would always go for the full Pro, or the binned Max chip, in the 16" chassis. Best belance!

I'll NEVER EVER buy any Laptop witha SCREEN less than 17.3. I'd jump at a 21" 10 20 12 Lb Behemoth Because Screen Realistate is most Important to me. Besides if you can't lift 12 Lbs get a GYM membership and Bulk up booby.

Yea that's true, underrated comment! Looking to upgrade from my 27 inch laptop since 5 years, I would've bought the M4 Max but the biggest one is only 16inch, not sure still how much of a wait it's gonna be till some brand makes a 32 inch laptop. smh

@ not really, it’s just cheaper. I spend $700 on eBay for parts and got the specs of a $2000 laptop. Nothing wrong with paying for convenience and the apple brand though
