When I did disabled parking enforcement, we loved to go out on "Black" Fridays. We normally have two people go out at once. On "Black" Friday, we had two cars out with two people in each and still couldn't keep up! It's so gratifying writing tickets to people who abuse the disabled placards.

It would be nice that they give people with disabilities that need these parking spots jobs to hand out tickets I agree 100%. All it would take is a picture with an iPad and some kind of print out to give the people a ticket that are abusing the spot. Thank you! My husband accompanies me on shopping trips. If I walk, he uses the handicapped space. If I use my electric scooter, we park at a handicapped space as there is room to unload and assemble the scooter without being in the traffic lanes, then he moves the car. That, however, brings the concern for a safe return to the car to load up my scooter into question. If they would put in low time, say 10 minutes, handicapped parking space next to the regular spaces, then we would feel it was a reasonable alternative. That would also be misused however. The real solution would be peoples’ respect to our laws regarding people with disabilities or just plain slowing down and being aware in places such as parking areas. After all, it isn’t just handicapped people you need to watch out for, but children and even pets. Yes, people need to keep their children and pets under control, but even the best parent can be distracted in a busy parking, lot sometimes. It only takes once to bring in a lifetime if misery. Drivers share that responsibility as well. I speak as a disabled driver as well as a disabled pedestrian.

Fines should start at $1500, double with each additional offense and tow the car.. if they are habitual offenders, jail time. First jail 30 days, double from there. 1200 tickets at the minimum of $300 comes to $360,000. Not all tickets are at the minimum so this number should be much higher. Now if you paid a dedicated ticketing officer $60,000 a year, that pays for six full-time officers. And of course those same officers could be writing tickets for other infractions as well. The point I'm trying to make is often municipalities claim they don't have the resources to clamp down on these infractions while to me it seems like it should be self sustaining.

Sometimes we forget to put it up, and it's almost always an honest mistake - but some people get very defensive when others bring it to their attention, because it can seem like the person is challenging their disability or their right to have the placard just because they forgot to put it up. So please be careful what you say and how you say it in that kind of situation, because it can easily be interpreted the wrong way. However, for me personally, hanging it up is often the very last thing I do before I get out of the car and taking it down the first thing I do when I get back to the car, no matter how long I will be in the car before pulling out, so that's something to consider as well - unless he was already heading into wherever it was and it wasn't hanging up, it honestly wasn't your place to say anything; if I had been him, I would have done the same thing.

My mother used to tell me to park in a handicap spot when I took her shopping. I told her I would drop her off at the door, go park in a normal spot then pick her up at the door when shopping was done. I always thought someone in worse situation then us could use that spot. Then my wife , double knee replacement was issued a permit. When she was in recovery we used the spots but now we don’t but she is about to get her feet operated on so we will use it more. By the way, because of a heart condition , congestive heart failure twice I have been offered a permit ( before my wife) but never took it using the same idea that there are people worse off. The problem is the enforcement isn’t often enough. People sit in their car while someone “ RUNS” in and shops . I would also like to see enforcement in mall parking lots where people think it’s ok to park in fire lanes . 2 min, 5 min or an hour, it’s still not legal to abuse these spaces. As I said, we need to up the enforcement! This story is over 6 yrs old popping up on my you tube today .
