I want to add a bit more to what you said on Guilty Gear Strive: The Board Game. Not only is it based on Exceed Fighting System, it’s from the same developers and fully cross-compatible with Exceed. So, if you happen to own prior seasons of Exceed it becomes one of the most expansive fighting game rosters ever seen. And yes, I would refer to it as a fighting game, I’ve brought this thing to fighting game locals before and it’s been a huge hit. Never seen another board game where I can play footsies.

I’m glad the game is good… though sadly; I’ll never be able to play it. The upfront cost of that game is STUPIDLY expensive (like ALL of ArkSys’ merch on their god forsaken site), and if it goes out of print, that price is just going UP.
@theplumbum823 ай бұрын
and like it was brought up in the video the lack of any actual art in the game is honestly kinda heinous. There's not even boxart that isn't already ArcSys' official art. The fact its just a new coat of paint on Exceed as well kinda just makes it feel heinously lazy. It's an expansion pack being sold as a full game. fwiw exceed plays pretty well, although some exceed things don't work with GG like characters other than Sol, Ky having installs in the form of Exceeding. (I'll give some leniency for characters like Nago or Leo where they used Exceed to represent Blood Rage and backturn respectively but like... does Testament need an install? Jack-O'?)
@boatman90413 ай бұрын
@theplumbum82 tbf I think beyond the branding it works as just season 7 of exceed. It's expensive but it's not more expensive than 5 boxes of previous seasons (which is what the content adds up to) As for the installs, that's just the general conceit of the game, so it makes sense why it's the way it is. Also! If it's too expensive there's an officially supported mod for the GG season on tabletop Sim, and a semi official version that has all 7 seasons.
@theplumbum823 ай бұрын
@@boatman9041 I'm aware of the TTS mods, that's how I can be so sure of the gameplay even. I got the preview pack in paper and definitely came to the conclusion it isn't worth the asking price. I understand the install mechanic is fairly central to the gameplay of exceed but it also belies a pretty bad lack of iteration, it feels like the system is forced into GGST even if they've managed a couple cool ways of instancing GGST's stuff (f. ex I like their iteration of Stain State and Blood Rage into the existing system mechanics but there's zero instancing of say, Jack-O's servants) Honestly "it works fine as Exceed season 7" is actually kind of my complaint, it's Exceed Season 7 with the serial numbers filed off, which feels deceptive. Exceed is well-designed and all and I'll still have fun with the game but I'll pine for what it could have been.

I actually backed that Cookie Run board game on Kickstarter a few years back; it's a pretty simple worker placement game where each player builds up their individual kingdom. You take turns assigning your workers to either gather resources, spend resources to construct buildings that offer special benefits or bonus scoring at game's end, or go on hunts to battle enemies for more points. Battles are determined by your number of cookie soldiers plus the results of a dice roll, and certain buildings give you more soldiers or ways to modify your rolls. Not a bad game, overall.

A few more things to mention -Pokemon master trainer has two more versions of it. Even if they are not all called master trainer. Someone also converted nearly every pokemon for the game and put it up on tabletop simulator. So now you can get time machined by friends with more modern pokemon. -Zelda has this weird boardgame that kind of acts like a version of heroquest. You visit dungeons, fight monsters and try to recover the triforce. This also has a updated version on tabletop simulator. -Resident evil has not one, not two, but three board games based off the original trilliogy. You can even use them in tandem with eachother due to them sharing the same ruleset(So, you could have chris do one of the RE2 secario's or have leon do one of the secenario's for RE1.) -Did you know Gears of war has a board game? I never did play this, but its fascinated me for a while. Last, not a board game but halo has muliple wargames associated with it. Be it ground combat, 40k style combat, and even space combat. Some people even wrote custom rules to use the halo megablox figures.

It's funny how a medium famous for being badly adapted into a medium full of adaptations (movies) would be so consistently decent when adapted into a medium not known for being easy to adapt things into (board games), but in retrospect it makes perfect sense-- they're already games! Even with the mobile games, where you'd expect them to be a soulless cash grab, a property with a recognizable aesthetic and an extremely simple set of mechanics gives the team making the board game so much space to make something interesting. In conclusion, WOW this makes those bad game show board games so much more embarrassing.

A board/retro game cafe I visited with some friends had it, and one friend recognized it so the 4 of us sat down to play it. First off, someone broke my character's legs before we began, because throughout the game i only ever managed to roll higher than 2 for my movement twice. However, I got into the main game because I got an event that let me switch with someone, and got very lucky in every other aspect, and over the rest of the game got some decent items and a team of the best pokemon in the entire game. After about an hour, I finally decided to roll up to the elite 4, pulled the weakest member, and got absolutely rocked regardless. At which point we decided that everyone else, upon seeing the strongest of them all getting obliterated by the weakest elite 4 member, all gave up their dreams of being the very best and we put the game away.

The Fallout Board Game is pretty nostalgic. I played it quite a few times with my Dad who's a massive Fallout fan and it's super fun. Another video game board game we played that wasn't covered in the video was Resident Evil 2, which essentially a campaign game where you play through the entire story of Resident Evil 2 the video game as iconic characters like Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and Ada Wong. However, what's funny is the fact that they had to make more characters for the game to flesh it out, but they're a bunch of nobodies like Robert Kendo (the gun shop owner), Brad Vickers (a police pilot who dies at the beginning of the game), and Sherry Birkin (an actually relevant character, but is just a little girl). What's even more funny is that these characters are better than the iconic characters. Both Kendo and Brad have great abilities that Leon Kennedy wishes he has like better gunfire and faster movement respectively. Overall, a fun cooperative game, but the base game has some pretty bad 2d models for doors, corpses, and item boxes as they're all super dark tokens lying on a usually dark background. If you want to play this game, splurge on the 3D miniatures.

It has some great risk reward mechanics, as if you take any damage, you lose your current combo and have to start over, along with how you discard cards to dodge, so you have to decide which cards to play and which ones to hang onto. Each character plays differently, and they even keep V's "familiars deal damage but only V can kill enemies" mechanic, which honestly makes him pretty fun to play as. As for why you would play it over the videogame. 1 is Devil May Cry with multiplayer, which is especially interesting as you have to work together to complete the level but are competing to gain the most points. 2 is that it doesn't require the dexterity the video games do. As much as I love DMC, they aren't games I can recommend to everyone due to how fast paced they are and how many buttons you have to press in quick succession. Tellingly, my only complaints are typical board game gripes, such as it taking a surprising amount of space to play and store, and the rulebook could be slightly clearer on some rules.

You should look into the game "A question of scruples" the concept is already kinda bad, but it was published in the 80s and is thus a GOLDMINE for incredibly outdated questions like "Would you hire a GAY teacher?" or "Your neighbor is beating his wife, do you call the police?"

Not sure if it's a board game, a card game, or a mix of both, but I'm super excited for the planned Bugsnax tabletop game. Spoilers: So excited to completely ignore the ending of the game and doom my favorite characters by endlessly feeding them Bugsnax until they eventually die and become one with the island! I know I'm being sarcastic, but I am actually pretty excited. I've already decided that I'm maining as Chandlo.

As the resident Mario nerd I have to point out that the Mario game token from Donkey Kong is actually fairly accurate to how he looked in promotional materials from the time and the poses from the box are actually fairly accurate to the side of the arcade cabinet, however that doesn't explain why the box shows every fold of Donkey Kong's skin or why Mario looks like he ate ten thousand lemons

between slay the spire, fallout, temple run, jetpack joyride, and even fortnite monopoly from the last video… it’s weird how many of these games are like… decent to good. i guess they already know they’re competing with the actual video game, so they put more care than usual into it to make it fun.

I own the Slay the Spire: Board game and I got to say- yeah its a pretty amazing one, great with friends and solo alike. Though one of the downsides was the included sleeve quality - they started peeling after some runs... for the cost. but otherwise would highly recommend!

quick note on pokemon master trainer, you forgot to mention the time machine card, which forces a reroll on any die roll in the game even if it's not your turn, so if for example if an elite 4's attack bonus roll sucks you can just reroll it so another player doesnt get to win

I remember this Temple Run CARD game where you have this little machine which shouts a player and a command card you have to play. Like “PLAYER TWO, SLIDE”, and you’d have to play that respective card and slap the button before the timer ran out or else you’d have to draw another card. First one to discard their entire hand wins. It was wicked fun.

Slay the Spire the board game slaps. It’s adapted well to physical limitations for abilities, but the co-op nature causes some crazy damage. It’s INCREDIBLY long (~30 min per player per act, if people know what they’re doing)

I'm surprised you didn't mention xcom's board game. It's a coop board game run by an app dm where everyone is given a role (comms, air control, ect) and then the app spits out jobs at a decent clip and you have to frantically wotk with your other departments to stay on top of the invasion.

Pretty happy to see the Fallout game here. My personal recommendation for it is to get the Atomic Bonds expansion and play it co-op. Gonna bring up one I remember fondly: Gears of War the Board Game. Never played the source material, but the board game was pretty cool. You'd have to move from cover to cover to stay comparatively safer than being out in the open, but the danger was still there. You'd also have to manage your hand of cards because it's your character's health. Challenging game, but fun, and the figures looked great. Others I have or used to have: Minecraft Builders & Biomes, Warcraft, World of Warcraft, WoW the Adventure Game, Starcraft, EVE (Online) Conquests, DOOM (both versions), Portal the Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game, Sid Meier's Civilization the Board Game, Dark Souls, Cities: Skylines, M.U.L.E., and Horizon Zero Dawn. And a long time ago, Q*bert the board game; I found it in a thrift store and it was missing the dice needed to make it playable.

I think you should've mentioned some of the Tetris board games, especially the 80's one as in that one you literally just have to fill in the board and stack the pieces to the top to win

as someone who spent thee money on the collectors edition of the slay the spire board game, I genuinely think it was one of the best purchases I've made board game wise. I have had so much fun playing it witth my friends, finding ways to create combos across multiple players that just would not work in the video game.

One of my favorite board game video games was the kingdom rush games (rift in time and natures vengeance (I think). A really good adaption of the game, with unique “time reset” mechanic with the towers and an entirely new villain, and they are cross compatible.

I had to crunch the numbers. If you naively barge in with a Mewtwo, you're just objectively dead if you don't have at least +8 in item cards. Even with +10, you're at just under 12%. Even with the real best mon (a full evolution bonus Kanto starter), you've only reached 63%. Throw in a Time Machine? 83%. And good luck getting that much prep again if you fail, assuming you even get it in the first place.

The entire time I was watching the endless runner part of the video I was thinking, “wouldn’t a card based game be the best choice?” It looks like Subway Surfers was close, but missed the mark. I think there should be the 3 lanes, but they all shift down each turn. You have a hand of move cards that you draw back up at the end of your turn. As you collect different power ups, they get set in front of you that you can use at any time. I think a second try would really make for a good game. I don’t even play Subway Surfers, but an endless runner board game with 3 lanes of cards that are constantly moving sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe I could house rule the game somehow? Might or might not not be worth it.
