Radiant Silvergun is a masterpiece, this year in 2023 I played it for the first time via Emulation. It's also available on Xbox. Hyperstone Heist I played together with a friend on Mega Drive in the 90th while a sleepover in his home, we had a lot of fun with it.

I did an eBay auction once for a game that ran around $80. Offered free shipping. And for some stupid reason, wherever the buyer lived I guess, the shipping came to $35!!! Not the usual $6ish. And not to mention the money I sank into properly boxing and protecting it (probably another $5+). So SCREW THAT. I now let the buyer cover their own shipping no matter the cost of the game. If they live in a wasteland that is hard to ship to, that’s not my problem.

As to the house burning down analogy, I basically encountered this situation recently as someone pulled a fire alarm in my apartment building. After wrangling my cat into her carrier I grabbed a duffel bag, my Switch, 3DS, and GBA, then swept my entire portable game collection off the shelf into the bag before wrapping up my copies of xenosaga episodes 1,2&3 in a dirty shirt and placing it at the top. So yeah, it seems I've decided my priorities. Edited for clarity, as it occurred to me that the phrase "Nintendo portable collection" likely conjured a far different and more grandeous image than intended.

My apartment burned down, 8 units in total, I had just bought the 500gb xbox 360 and had several games, a ps2 collection w about 80-90 games, an NES with over 50 games, 30+ original Disney classics in clamshells.. all that was lost but my wife and infant son were saved, so I've always considered it a positive!

Sorry to hear you went through that but glad all the most important things were safe. I was keeping a bunch of stuff at my grandparent's house and it burned down. Lost my SNES, N64 and all games, PS1 and most games, Xbox, all the PS1 strategy guides, gameboy, gameboy games but the most painful was that all of my childhood toys were in there too (TMNT, GI Joes, etc). Sometimes it'll just hit me overwhelmingly that it's all gone still. Feels bad man. You're not alone.

Hello retrobird two part comment here hope you don't mind but I thought it was better than double dipping. I love how you focus on talking about the collecting aspect as opposed to reviewing or overviewing games. Very unique in a saturated market. Now to answer the question raised in the video I would "sell my soul" for the link to the past cart with my save, my grandpa's save and my mom's save still on it. Probably the only time in my life where three generations of family worked together on a game.

Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to get back my original Ocarina of Time collector’s edition. I got it for my 13th birthday and it instantly became my favorite game and still is to this day. I think for me the closest I can relate to this was my hunt for Mega Man X3 in the early 2000's - I loved the SNES Mega Man games, and I really wanted the third one, but it already seemed expensive by that point going for $70 used at a local GameStop (which ironically doesn't sound as expensive now, considering how much more it's gone up). My mom and I were on the hunt for it more than once, and I sort of gave up at some point. Fast-forward to the year 2012 and my mother got it as a birthday gift for me that year, so it felt like getting some closure on my childhood hunt for that special game.

Mr. Retro Bird good sir, I am a new subscriber to your channel, and I have to say, you make exceptional content. Your writing is thoughtful, persuasive, and fun. You truly capture many of the viewpoints and sentiments of a particular zeitgeist that I was a part of. I am turning 37 years old this month, I'm an attorney with three kids, and even with all of the responsibilities that entails, I still make time to enjoy video games from the "Golden Era." Quick little story for ya: In 1996, I got Alien Trilogy on PS1 for my 14th birthday. I played the heck out of it and enjoyed every second. Years go by and games I own come and go as I trade things in, but somehow decades go by and I've never gotten rid of my original copy of Alien Trilogy. Now in my mid 30s, I've started collecting retro games for the first time and I boot up Alien Trilogy, scoff at the outdated graphics, and decide I'm going to trade it in to my local retro game store. I tell my wife and she says "Are you SURE you won't want it again down the road?" I confidently say, "Yeah I'm sure. I don't think I'll ever play it again and, even if I want to, it's cheap enough." So I trade it in and get maybe $30 store credit for it, which seemed pretty good at the time. Fast forward two years and what do I find out? Well it turns out I had a very rare black label jewel case variant of Alien Trilogy worth close to $300 that I traded in...Yeah, that didn't feel good. That being said, after checking eBay religiously for 2+ years, I eventually was able to buy the same variant for $30. Moral of the story: Listen to your wife and be sure to check VARIANTS before deciding what to do with your games!

If my house was burning, the only thing to save would be my PC or more specifically, the hard drives. Everything else would just be monetary value but losing what's on my hard drives would be too time consuming and would probably never get back 100%. I have 20+ years of work saved up. I should probably look into some kind of cloud backup system now that I think about it.

There's a lot to be said of having the exact physical copies you used to own. Thankfully I never got rid of any of my old games, but a few years ago I had to get rid of a box of water damaged player's guides and game magazines. I got a reasonable insurance payout so I was able to replace them. Still, I got pretty sentimental when I had to throw out the Chrono Trigger player's guide I had since 96. It still had the address label on it for my mom's old house, which has long since been sold and torn down. It was a free gift for subscribing to Nintendo Power, and I remember running out to the mailbox when it was delivered and brushing snowflakes off the cover once I got inside. The new copy I replaced it with doesn't evoke the same nostalgia.

I’d sell my soul for a Gears of War game in the style of the old battlefield games. There are tons of battlefields and situations that could be used as well as enemy archetypes with vehicular movement to match that of the COG or the UIR. There is so much lore and untapped areas for branching out a gears game into. That is what I would like to see. Epic recreation battles from the series history.

I almost had a fire about two years ago. The appartment on the left and one floor down from mine burned out. Somebody threw a burning bomb through their window. It took minutes to get out of control. I really didn't have to think about taking any games out. I put pants on, shoes, a jacket and picked up my phone, that was it. Didn't even wear a shirt... Once I stood in front of my house with my neighbours I though, I lost everything that I collected. Luckily the fire department arrived within minutes and put out the fire before it got to my home.

You know who you looked like? That kid from the Wizard movie where he's discovered by that actor Fred Savage, when he played Double & he got this insane score. Then at the end of the movie he's kicking everyone's butt in Super Mario Bros 3. That's who you remind me of when you showed your younger you. Games I would sell my soul for. I was so upset when I heard not even a week later of donating my Game Boy and games to my cousins it had been stolen. Apparently the story was they brought it to school and they left it in their backpack and no not IN the backpack like normal people would do but in the side pocket that's meant for water bottles and it was a mesh one and a kid must've saw that and stolen it during recess since this school made the kids carry their packs around them all the time. This might sound corny or the "same old thing to say", but I really am lucky to have bought the vast majority of the stuff I've always wanted years ago. There were a few straddlers like Einhander , Guardian Heroes and R-Type Delta that I didn't have, but I managed to get them in the last year. So, I'm at the point that if I want a retro game, I have to think really hard. I don't buy games to just "collect", but rather games I've always wanted to own and play. Couldn't care less about "rarity". That is my advice to people that are just getting into this. So, to entertain the title of the video, no, there's not a single game I'd sell my soul for.

A collector friend of mine hooked me up with copies of Mega Man X2 and X3 years ago, for a fraction of what they sell for. I used to rent those games all the time. I would basically rent it every other weekend, giving a childhood friend of mine progress updates as he played through it, too. Those games mean a lot to me, and I’ll probably never get rid of them if I can help it. I’ve always really appreciated the gesture, even if the dude I got ‘em from probably doesn’t even remember doing it. I don’t necessarily think i’d sell my soul to get them back if I sold them, but they’re definitely things I want to hold on to if I have the ability to.

Fun video, as always! While I had analysis paralysis about the question at first, I'm pretty sure my Sega Saturn collection would be my "house is burning" salvage because it dovetails into both the nostalgia and the replacement value. The Saturn was my only console for nearly 10 years (1997 - 2006), and I played the heck out of its obscure little library in that time. I probably have more fond memories of those games than any others. The way the prices later went bonkers kind of goes without saying, sadly.

Once upon a time I owned Mega Man 1-5 on the Gameboy MIB which I had bought at each respective launch. A couple of years pass and Capcom announced they were going to release a compilation of these games on one cart for the GBA. So I marched down to my local EB Games, traded in my original copies as a deposit on the compilation, and waited. Months passed and Capcom announced they had cancelled the compilation. I was absolutely crushed. 😭 Decades passed, and while browsing eBay I saw a Mega Man compilation GBA cartridge for sale. This custom cart not only included the GB Mega Man games but also the GBC Mega Man X games, complete with save states and colour swapping options. I didn't care that it was a bootleg, this was the game I had been promised all those years ago come to life for only $40. I was so happy that I bought two copies: one for me and one for a friend to share it with. 😃

When I was younger (way to young to play these games mind ) my mother had purchased the fatal frame games for herself on the PlayStation 2 ,and I probably played those things more than she did and always wanted to get my hands on a new fatal frame. and of course one was in fact released for the Nintendo wii, but never got a localized release so like every week for a few years I would always desperately check the web for any news on a potential upcoming release hoping that maybe we would get it. I even tried to talk my mom into importing the thing so I could try and get a home brew english patch for the wii despite having no earthly idea how I would even do that just that it was possible. Eventually I moved on played newer games but it was always a “what I wouldn’t give to play that game”. Now the game actually did get a recent port to new consoles and it’s … only okay . I think I got more enjoyment out of the satisfaction of booting it up and saying finally after all these years I can play this than I got out of actually playing it.

Twenty three years ago my parents moved and threw out my CIB set of Dragon Warrior 1-4. I can't justify the expense of those titles now...but I think I'd give up a few toes to get them back in my collection.😂😂 Had to settle by picking up the famicom games but just not the same.

Ouch. Love those games, though I played the Super Famicom remasters of 1-3 since they're way easier to read with kanji than the Famicom originals that were all hiragana.

My entire gameboy collection. It was pristine, with a carrying case and the magnifying glass thing. I gave to my mom to donate to children in need. She sold it to a friend of hers (not in need) for a measly amount and donated the cash.

Considering the "game you wish existed" scenario - I'd sell my soul for Free Radical's version of Star Wars Battlefront III. Is that a "retro game?" I don't think so, but it's still my answer 🙃

Looking around my game room now and thinking there are still a few holy grail items on my list, but not soul worthy. One item from my childhood that could meet that value, is my childhood, plastic, he-man tent. I loved that thing, but I (and friends) were so rough with it that it maybe lasted a year before being completely destroyed. One of those things you could never replace, as that tent doesn’t exist anymore. Only some hazy memories 😢❤

A non-existent game I'd sell my soul for -- a Bomberman collection. Particularly the SNES Bomberman games. A collection featuring all 5 SNES Bomberman games would be perfect. I especially love Super Bomberman 3,4,5. None of these games were released in the US, but they are some of the best multiplayer versus games on the SNES (or any system in my opinion). It would be great if we could have a collection of all these games on modern consoles.

I still own all my childhood N64 games in their original boxes. I would sell my soul for any of those if they went missing. Got my N64 with Goldeneye when I was 6, have amazing memories of unwrapping it on Christmas day 1998. I only ever had 6 games: Goldeneye Banjo-Kazooie - Birthday 1999 F1 world championship II - ??? remember picking it up with my mum The World is Not Enough - Christmas 2000 Banjo-Tooie - Birthday 2001 Conker's Bad Fur Day - sometime in 2002, remember my Dad buying it for me on a whim and getting the bus home. I 100% completed all of them and still have my save files with the exception of The World is not Enough as that was on a memory card which has now ran out of battery : (

Its definently Earthbound. I found that game out of nowhere at a video rental store. I said "Holy Jeez, look at the size of that box!!" Then I played it non stop during "little league baseball season", and I was going swimming every day with some new friends I made in a neighborhood waiting pool that I pee'd in constantly through my shorts, the entire time. It was, a memorable year I guess.

I have several rare Game Boy Pockets. I’d have to go for them first in a fire because I wouldn’t ever be able to get them back. One glows in the dark (1 of 2,000), one is Swedish and yellow and blue like their flag (1 of 3,000), and another was given to employees at Atlus and says Atlus on it. There are likely around 50 of those ever made. My Game Boy collection is my favorite thing within my game collection so I’d have to go for them first.

Really great video topic! My game would be a really terrible game called Monkey Puncher for the Gameboy colour, it has more sentimental value and memories attached, but the prices are ridiculous on eBay! Another quick lil story for ya I tried to sell my original see through DMG to our UK equivalent of GameStop, they wouldn't take it because I had my name and initials scratched onto it! Really glad I didn't sell it, I still love it and play it! Loving all the comments and stories too, thank you for being wholesome!

For me, it would probably be the Sega Saturn stuff we had as kids. We actually kept all the video game stuff from childhood, which now I have in my possession, but somehow, someway, my brother lost the Sega Saturn stuff. It's a real bummer. We had a lot of really good games that are now incredibly expensive. As for games that I still have that I would "sell my soul" for would be Chrono Trigger for SNES, Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy Tactics/Metal Gear Solid/Syphon Filter 2 for PS1, Sonic the Hedgehog 2/Mortal Kombat I & II for Genesis. All of those would be for sentimental value.

I probably have about a hundred or so systems total, I can agree that the only ones that I really remember are the ones that have some significance as a gift or whatever. By that I mean that I have X amount of Genesis model2, but I know I still have my original somewhere with the missing power button & the New Milford Amusement sticker on the bottom. Same for stuff like the Gameboy Pocket my aunt got me back in the 90s, or my original Gamecube & Xbox. A lot of the early stuff is kind of lost to time, but a lot of the later gen stuff of the past 20ish years I bought & kept. I'd be here forever trying to explain it all. But I will say my favorite is my original Dreamcast, which is basically just the original motherboard at this point. I spared no expense on that thing and I love it so far. When the GDrom failed I figured I could either swap it with another unit since I have so many DCs on hand, or I could build the shit out of it... so I upgraded everything.

I don’t know if I would sell my soul, but I would love to get back my old collection that I lost in the metaphorical fire that was my life 20 years prior. I have a Switch now, but I would have loved to have kept my collector’s edition GBA SP and GB Micro, I’m _never_ getting those back! Not, that there is much incentive to do so, too much time has passed, but they were some of the slickest special editions Nintendo has ever put out. These were the NES Classic GBA SP and that Anniversary Game Boy Micro with the Famicom face plate. If they made a Switch lite with a similar decal or a design like those I’d have a third Switch for certain! Great Stuff!
