Tomiki Aikido (now called Shodokan Aikido) has evolved since this 1975 film. The waza is now more direct and, hence, more effective. Tomiki’s Aikido has none of the woo-woo stuff about Ki I heard in many Aikikai dojos. Shodokan has evolved because of pressure testing, i.e., sparring. Aikikai Aikidoka take note.

Considering that Tomiki was 75 years old and not in particularly good health when this was recorded, he did pretty well to demonstrate what he did when suffering greatly at the time... A completely different Tomiki in his 50s kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4HLeGmOdpeZgpo

i bet ull all laughing to this ,but understand this like in BOXING or any other real life sparring, u dont wanna show any kind of movement to ur attacker while u are moving or attaking.... makes sence... this was like early form of shadow boxing at a time...to defend knife attacks, not punches

How effective is this technique in self-defense?

ANY UFC fighters would get bleed to death when u give some drugaddict raging guy a knife who really wants to hurt u with it.... maybe they will win a fight, but they could really get hurt doing so

looks poor in technique. I dont think that Tomiki did understood much frum Aikido. So it was particually insolence to call Akikido.

First of all, I would like to comment that this was shot just a few months before Tomiki Sensei's death (December 24th, 1975). He was 79 years old at that time and we should take this fact into account when judging the technique. Second, let me add that this video was created for teaching purposes, explaining the very basic principles and techniques of Shodokan Aikido. Lastly, Tomiki Sensei was awarded highest Dan grades by both Kano Sensei of Kodokan Judo and Ueshiba O-Sensei of Aikido. I would certainly not doubt the judgement of these Budo masters.

He's 8th Dan in Judo under Kano, in addition to 8th Dan in Aikido under Ueshiba.
