One of my pet peeves is that grocery stores have a gluten free section but not a carb free section. I bet there are more diabetics than gluten sensitives.
@SeriousKeto
@SeriousKeto 2 ай бұрын
Very true. Roughly 1% of Americans have celiac and about 6% have a gluten sensitivity. Compare that to percentage of people that have type 1 or type 2 diabetes or are pre-diabetic, which combined is closing in on 50% of the population according to the latest CDC data.

100% agree they should have a low carb section at stores. Also, most restaurants have "gluten-free" options but not a low carb or diabetic friendly menu. Perhaps someday we can all dream :)

I kicked sugar years ago. Was in withdrawal for two days with migraine and vomiting. No one knows how addictive sugar is. It is in almost all processed foods because it is a cheap additive. When looking at sugar testing results, "follow the money" and run down who paid for the study. It will open your eyes. Good luck to all who are trying to eat healthier!

THIS ! My SO received a T2 diabetes diagnosis on 4/21/24 with an A1C of 11.9 as confirmed a couple weeks earlier when 3 ER visits in a matter of 4 days & had a reading at every checkin glucose reading in the high 330’s 😳 Anyhoo the ER visits weren’t about the glucose BUT wounds / sores don’t heal when glucose is that high. I buckled down and decided to own the foods & meals going forward which brought me to your channel by early May. I call you my “Americas test kitchen” for glucose testing to find foods we can “legally” eat. 3 months after diagnosis - A1C went from 11.9 to 6.7 and was able to taper off long acting insulin. Just wanted to say THANK YOU for your thorough information sharing / recipes and methodical testing for glucose spikes.

We have a "greenline" near our house where we walk all the time. There is a bridge there that is over a body a water. If you stand there on the bridge, all the turtles come swimming over looking for food. I bought some floating turtle food and now I walk there just to feed them. I love seeing those sweet turtles climbing over each other to get the food. Sometimes someone will already be there and I will give them some of the turtle food so they can feed them too. Its a nice way to connect with someone new and feed the turtles.

Be very wary of saying doctors should get more nutrition training. There are a few medical schools working on this BUT the curriculum they're favouring, is the current orthodox, plant heavy dogma. Until the current guidelines/plate/pyramid are completely discarded, you're gonna get a reinforcement of the bad stuff. It's hard to know what the future of community nutrition holds while Stanford, Harvard and other 'elite' organisation are industry mouthpieces

I’ve mentioned the numerous videos by Dr Berry and others to deaf ears. I know it’s hard when you are a carb addict, my mother put corn syrup into homemade baby formula on advice from pediatrician. The gatling gun was an improved copy of previous similar weapons. Tobacco was originally a psychoactive herb that was smoked... which is why it became popular in Europe. But when they started doing mass farming of it in the 1700-1800's, the strain that was the best for mass farming was the least psychoactive. That is why in the 1500's and 1600's you read stories of Europeans in tobacco "bars" would have visions and dreams... and it mostly died out by the 1800's except for the Native Americans who still had some of the original strains.

I think one thing we could do in North America like they do in the UK is to make the default drink at fast food restaurants be the diet version and then make it an upcharge to switch to the sugary stuff. And, in general, just like they do for cigarettes (at least in Canada anyway) is have an extra tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.
@SeriousKeto

I wonder what impact price elasticity (or the lack thereof) would have on demand for sugar. If you look at the price of cigarettes as an example of another addictive product. The demand is very inelastic - the price keeps going up and people keep buying it regardless.

Love the podcast - it was so great to hear someone talk about all the foods around us that have "extra carbs" I have often wondered if anyone else noticed it besides me. I have had occasion to hear people talk about the food they eat at restaurants, and wonder if part of the issue is over used (if there is such a thing) taste buds. Example, there was a meat and veggie dish - I thought it was aweful because it was too sweet and too salty. Others commented that they could not really taste much of anything - and oh it needed more sugar. I know restaurants cater to their customers and I am in no way trying to shame them, but with foods in general loaded with sweet that we consume everyday - I think leave our tastebuds numb and not really tasting the food. Maybe a cute cartoon type ad about the tastebuds and what we give them might get kids attention and could be positive way to change a few habits - It is just a thought.

I think the answer lies in getting the funding for government agencies like the FDA, etc. changed from private company funding to government funding. The various associations like the Diabetes Association, the Heart Association, etc. get their funding from the food and drug industries. That conflict of interest influences guidelines in schools, hospitals, and other institutions and what's taught in medical schools. The truth about disease and nutrition can't get through all the smoke produced from these companies.

Hey Steve. It's really me, not a spoof of me. That's what a copy would say. Curse! Anyway... These fake users must be bots. I can guarantee there is some AI out there (not sentient - I am not nuts - yet) where you can create a bunch, filtered by criteria that creates these and an account within seconds... And then spams you and many other people. I have no explanation why somebody would do this. Except target you, but they do this for others too. Trolls are strange. Yeah the sugar thing and campaign... I doubt this will work. Back in Germany or in Europe in general people smoke a lot. There are smoking booth at the airport to let them stand in there and smoke and not bother other people. What Germany started to do is put giant warning labels on cigarette packages. Not just words but gruesome pictures, really disgusting. People still smoke. I do not think you can stop an addiction this way. Kids don't care because they think they are invincible, Older people don't care because this only happens to "other" people. I have this best friend. He smokes. It is disgusting to me but he thinks he is fine. Then he drinks a whole bottle of wine every day and beer in addition. He does not consider himself an alcoholic. We used to be roommates and a long time ago, one day, we only had $5 left until payday. I told him we need to buy some ramen or cheap soup to survive and he needed to use the money to buy wine. It was his $5. Sugar is the same. You can not explain the craving sugar issue to people. I did not understand until I felt how it is when the craving was gone. I did not know it was constantly there.

Smoking is hard to quit. I'm still fighting the fight at 53. Started smoking when I was 16. I don't smoke in the house or the car, I just go out to my little island in the garage with the exhaust fan. It's a horrible habit and I tell everybody to never start smoking. I've tried vapes and gum and medication and lozenges. The lozenges are fine when I go places that I can't smoke. I've made my own cigarettes for 20 years. Sin taxes don't work if you can still make them for $0.50 a pack. My mom smoked four packs a day until she quit cold turkey at 65. She turns 90 next year and is in good health. I'm down to half a pack a day so hopefully I'll get there. Last MRI of my lungs showed that they were clear so apparently I have Mom's genetics. 🤞🏼 At least I've never had a problem with alcohol or drugs. I do eat relatively healthy but you got to enjoy life a bit right?

Great video, Steve! Watch "My 600lb Life" before they go to Dr. NOW. The amount of pizza, fast food, and sweets they eat is stunning! On another note , I have always thought that children in school as a drug prevention program should be shown before and after photos of meth/heroin/alcohol or any drug addict.

I agree 100% on the food compared to tobacco but until big food agri business and big pharma are addressed for their outsized influence I don't see mass improvement in food or drugs and thus health. Small scale movement is already well underway which is great but mass societal level change is no where likely in the future in the US.

Thank for sharing such great information, wonderfully creative recipes and taking on challenges such as glucose testing with various Keto breads, etc. Every person may have their own results and providing a baseline idea is a great foundation. 100% agree with the cigarettes vs sugar and attempting to change the idealism with visuals such as "imagine if this was on the inside" (or similar). In my perspective, sugar is the most addictive substance on the planet whether it's natural like fructose or not like corn syrup. As humans, we (many/some) are drawn to the "sweet" that seemingly provides an outlet or chemical reaction (serotonin/pleasure/etc) and many are looking for that "escape". Capitalism/corporations are aware of this and use that as a way to keep the money coming in not just for food stuffs, also the medical issues and expenses created from the over abundance of sugar. How do we change this? Well, first is to help us understand why the need/desire for sweet or sugar is so addictive. What is it solving and why? Do we have a chemical imbalance? Or are we just reacting to what's around us such as negativity in social media, the news, our peers or is it a desire to find reward for ??? Cigarettes had an immediate negative that many reacted to such as smell and the discomfort of smoke so with sugar, the comforts vs discomfort may need a new visual or direction as sugar (in some cases like nicotine) can take time to show the results. In essence, it's a battle of sorts of greed, need or finding why and how this can be overcome as a whole. Moderation is key right? Well if so, why do many not grasp this concept...or do they? My apologies for the long post, I am a T1D which was not caused by sugar being autoimmune and my diet is very strict because I choose to not be overweight or have medical issues and feeling healthy is so much better for me. I do not judge any others for their choices as everyone is allowed to choose and not everyone can achieve that "healthy" with the same diet. Side note - would love to see what Chompie's Low carb bread results you may have - I've had some pretty good results.

I run across a lot of wildlife in my walks. I would never attempt to touch any creature and I always walk past slowly and cautiously to keep from spooking them. Geese are the worst. Those things will start hissing and chase you if you get within about 20 feet (especially if they have young ones with them).

The chemicals and sugar in these sweetened drinks and item, are addictive and the companies know that because the more you consume the more you want and it's more money for them. And also, buying those sugary sweet crappy cereals or other things it's cheaper than buying real food especially now because the costs are so outrageous. I too would love to see some kind of program put in place and I think they have done it in some schools taking out the machines so the kids can't get the candy and the Doritos etc. because the teachers noticed the same thing the change in the children's demeanor after lunch

Unfortunately, the cotton candy burrito is from my state. 🤢 So much sugar & food coloring. I looked it up in the news & one DFW newscaster called it a "blue diabetic coma" burrito. 😅 The school food program is horrific. Check out the breakfasts that are served. Dessert for breakfast has been a thing for a long time that we've forgotten what a proper nutritious breakfast is. Pop tarts, 🥞, juice. 🤢. Just hook them up to an IV of a sugar saline drip.

You know what's frustrating, is the number of alleged products now being sold that tell you they are KETO,, and they are in fact not. You just have to read the ingrediants on everything.. I know it's the last thing you need to add to chores list while you're shopping.. but you have to do it. I think this is prevalant problem with Bread Products and so called health bars.. Vastly most of them ARE NOT KETO. It's such a bummer.

I've done a couple of videos on label reading. Sadly, there is no oversight on labeling a product as "keto" and a "keto certified" stamp only means that the company was willing to write a check to use it on their label. That's one of the reasons I do reviews of "keto" products - to expose which ones are phony (about 80% of them) and which are legit.

Steve did you see (not a political post I promise) the Senate round table on Big Food at all? Really interesting. Learned that the two biggest tobacco companies made their way into the food industry and the addiction scientists who made cigarettes started working on processed food. Scary how it was intentional to make junk food addictive.

I don't know the solution either, but one of the first steps we should take, IMO, is ending ALL government subsidies that produce cheap food-like products at taxpayer expense just to line greedy pockets. Corn, wheat, sugar to start. It's offensive to me that my tax dollars are making these ingredients so ubiquitous and popular. Ending the subsidies would not make the damaging crops completely go away, but they should at least have to compete with REAL FOOD on a level playing field. I also love your idea of publicly shaming the foods the way cigarettes were shamed. How many times did we see saturated fat demonized in the limelight? It's high time we saw the same for sugar.

The UnbelievaBun butter bun is my favorite in terms structure and lack of glucose response. It’s pretty neutral in terms of flavor. Shipping, if you’re in the Western US, is BRUTAL though. I know Jerrod is trying to find a bakery on the west coast. I personally would have a tough time paying for shipping that’s more than the buns themselves.
